Posted: 15 Aug 2012 05:15 PM PDT

Lumia 900 owners in the USA and Canada have begun receiving the latest roll out for their Lumia 900s; Windows Phone Tango. This isn’t the WP 7.8 upgrade that we’re all waiting for, but it does bring some nice improvements to the device (it appears that there are two different Changelogs, one for Canada and the other for the USA):

USA:

  • Flip-to-silence feature
  • Camera performance enhancements
  • Battery performance enhancements
  • Startup sequence performance enhancements

Canada:

  • Flip-to-silence feature
  • Support for Contacts Share app, to send and receive business cards as text messages
  • Proximity sensor performance enhancements
  • Removes purple hue which affected some phones in low-light conditions
  • Startup sequence performance enhancements
  • Camera performance enhancements
Here’s a nice step by step to upgrading your Windows Phone to Tango:
This was also posted by Nokia on the same page: .

Nokia and Microsoft holding Nokia Lumia event in New York, Sept 5th?

Posted: 15 Aug 2012 10:52 AM PDT

Running concurrent with Nokia World in Helsinki it seems – Nokia is also holding another event on September 5th with Microsoft in New York to detail their latest in joint phone efforts

http://allthingsd.com/20120815/aiming-to-precede-new-iphone-nokia-and-microsoft-schedule-sep-5-event/

This, on top of the news earlier today sounds as if we’re definitely going to see a new Lumia announced this year. If it is September, hopefully Nokia will have learnt to get it on the store shelves ASAP.

Whilst the Helsinki thing seems to be something more formal, this appears to be an event for the press.

Cheers muerte for the tip

Beta Labs: Nokia City Scene updated for N9

Posted: 15 Aug 2012 05:26 AM PDT

Nokia Conversations posted up that there is an update for City Scene on the N9, over at Beta Labs. Having a look, the last update seems to have occurred two weeks ago. Anyway, the Beta Labs page lists the following changes:

  • Fixes the startup crash issues some users had with 2.0.4
  • Navigation supported, so you can see your route on panoramas
  • In selected cities, you will also get navigation directions based on store signs recognized from the environment (beginning with San Francisco and a few more will be added in coming days)
  • Navigate to any of these destinations:
    • business or service you've searched
    • destination on the map
    • friend's check-in
    • place you have stored as your favorite
  • For a given navigation route, you can prefetch all the panoramas before starting the navigation. For example if you are connected to Wi-Fi when starting the navigation, you can reduce the amount of data traffic needed while actually walking the route.

There is also this accompanying video:

My Dream Nokia #62: 18MP Sleek Nokia PureView (MeeGo/WP?)

Posted: 15 Aug 2012 03:50 AM PDT

Another very nice looking design from Edgar Mkrtchyan.  It’s a reimagination of #55. This was actually sent to us two weeks ago and I only came across it after searching the spam box for my internet bill.

Anyway, I’m really impressed by this design. It is very futuristic.

OS is not mentioned (previously #55 was a WP) but this one doesn’t seem to have any front buttons. This could be MeeGo or it could be WP with lights that only appear when you touch it.

I had a little time to re-imagine my perfect phone, and here are the reports I have made:
-to begin the design remains the same! these are the same curves against by the phone becomes thicker than before to include a larger battery (autonomy is a key point in my opinion)
appearance of audio-jack 3.5, and micro USB
-the biggest speakers
-of the biggest keys for volume-sliders and UNLOCKING
-the second-foncionalité the slider button is mute when it pushes the slider
-logo appears “NOKIA” on the front (with the correct font that I had not before :)
PureView-18 mpix sensor, 1080p recording, flash xenon + led flash
-the black magnesium lid, also available in cyan & white

my next concept will be on a mini tablet nokia windows 8 RTM will happen very soon
I have some problems with my G-mail account, I refer you my work with the new Outlook :)

Videos: Nokia Asha Story from Mitzy in Mexico City

Posted: 15 Aug 2012 02:28 AM PDT

A follow up to the Nokia Asha Stories, here’s Mitzy from Mexico. I may have missed this yesterday as I only just received the notification mail about it. She kina looks a little bit like a latina Miley Cyrus.

Previous post: http://mynokiablog.com/2012/08/13/video-the-story-of-my-nokia-asha-ana-laura-in-mexico-city-jean-in-bangkok/

The Me & My Asha video series tell the stories of young, urban Nokia Ashahttp://nokia.ly/Pc1dj8 owners around the world. These owners are cosmopolitan, highly social and aspirational. Mitzy is a 17-year old girl, living in Mexico City. She dreams of having two careers: dentist and vet. She uses her Nokia Asha to find new places to visit and to help her to relax.

Stephen Elop: Nokia Windows Phone 8 launching ‘soon’.

Posted: 15 Aug 2012 02:17 AM PDT

Reuters reports that Stephen Elop said Windows Phone 8 from Nokia will be launched soon.

This should quell some rumours and comments that suggest Nokia will not be announcing any new Lumia WP8s this year. Similar rumours cropped up last year after doubts on whether Nokia could release a WP7.5 device so soon (when they generally took 18 months to get anything out).

However, for those who still have doubts, they are warranted in their concern due to past Nokia mistakes:

  • Soon. This has no actual time frame and differs from person to person. To Nokia, soon may be 6 months or more. They’ve been a lot more cautious in using that word, particularly for the disappointment it ensues.
  • Launching this year could still not mean any phones are available this year. We are in mid August. We have, September, October, November, and December left. Should we see at the earliest, a September launch, it’s not very un Nokia like not to exceed 6 months until they have the phone on the shelves.

Where we can have some hope is that Nokia repeats or betters the launch seen with the Nokia Lumia 800. I.E. Have it shipping on the day of launch, possibly on shop markets in weeks. Since Nokia most likely has been working on WP8 concurrently with WP7, they should also have had much more time to iron out any major bugs.

Jolla fan concept phone design?

Posted: 15 Aug 2012 02:00 AM PDT

This would normally have gone to My Dream Nokia, but it’s not a Nokia so we’ll stick it in concepts.

Not sure what the format of the site is, but look what it says on the top corner. Is that their moniker for fakes?

http://pics.kuvaton.com/bshit/15082012604.jpg

The device seems to have a button on the left, camera plopped at the top in the middle and a curving MeeGo grid.

Cheers Kuvaton for the tip.

Marinokia collection – wall of invincibility

Posted: 15 Aug 2012 01:53 AM PDT

Check this out. It’s an impressive collection of pre-2006 classic Nokia phones. There are a lot of them as he’s been quite lucky to get more than one of certain models. It reminds me of the phone shop at the market.

Thanks MARINONOKIA for the pic!

Free Purity HD when you buy Lumia 800 or 900 between Aug. 15 & Sept. 30 in Australia

Posted: 14 Aug 2012 11:08 PM PDT

Just got emailed from PR about a deal that Nokia Australia are hosting. It is the same kind of deal that has been popping up around the world. In Australia, the headphones are about AUD$250, so you’re getting a pretty good deal.

When you buy your device, you go simply go to http://www.lumiamonster.com.au/ and enter the details.

Here is the press release I received:

Sydney, Australia – 15 August 2012. Today, Nokia is launching an exciting promotion giving Aussie music lovers the chance to get their hands on a free Nokia Purity HD Stereo Headset by Monster – worth $249 – with Nokia Lumia 800 or 900 purchases between 15th August – 30th September 2012.

The Nokia Purity HD Stereo Headset, the first in a line of top quality headsets from Nokia's partnership with Monster, has a contemporary design and produces great sound quality.  The headset comes with an on-cable remote which acts as both a mic and also media control for the phone.

To add to that, you get all the features you’d expect from Monster’s premium range of headphones: tangle-free wires, removable cable and a hard carry case to store them.

Lumia smartphone owners can also use their headset to enjoy Nokia Music and other services such as Mix Radio, which stream hours of music for free.  There's also Gigfinder that lets you search for local music events, share your discoveries using SMS, email or social networks and buy concert tickets online.

The Nokia Purity HD Stereo Headset comes in black, white, cyan and magenta colours to match the Lumia smartphones.

For more information on the promotion visit nokia.com.au or consumers can redeem the offer at http://www.lumiamonster.com.au before 15th October 2012.

From what I’ve seen, Mobicity are the cheapest retailers (only available online) and have the Lumia 900 and Lumia 800 priced at AUD$469 and AUD$ 359/$489 (check which version works for your carrier) respectively.
