Lumiappaday #262: Woman Calendar demoed on the Nokia Lumia 900

Posted: 03 Aug 2012 11:21 AM PDT

Hello ladies. Woman Calendar is an app that tracks a your menstrual cycle. You don’t have to be female to use this app (though it would help) as guys can track your partner. Why? Perhaps you’re planning for a family (or avoiding, hence pill reminder feature). You could track estimated ovulation dates, best fertility dates as well as just being able to estimate the next period. The cycles can be tailored to each woman as not all are the same.

It’s quite feature packed. You can make daily entries for things like weight, mood and more and these can be visualised over time on charts.

There are so many features so a manual explaining how everything works was very useful.

PS, I was asked about why the video dates are all July 31st. I have no internet  connection so I recorded and uploaded all of these in advance. Hopefully I will get a broadband connection on Tuesday.

MNB RG: Jolla aggressively trying to grow in Finland

Posted: 03 Aug 2012 10:33 AM PDT

Michael wrote up a fantastic piece earlier on his Q&A with Jolla. In that we learned that in the next 5 years, Jolla don’t want to simply be a small niche company but a significant volume player.

Muerte shares some interesting news below of Jolla ramping up the heat.

It seems that they (Jolla) are very “aggressively” trying to grow in Finland. The recent layoffs from Nokia in the city of Oulu (http://yle.fi/uutiset/nokia_axes_700_jobs_in_oulu/6240684) has hanged their original plans in Finland, according to Jussi Hurmola.

Jolla just organized a recruiting event in Oulu. It was packed of to-be-ex-Nokians (hundreds of them), and they received more than 200 CVs during that day.

Jussi Hurmola says, that originally they were planning to open a small office to Oulu, but they delayed that because everybody was busy with Nokia. Now that has changed, and there is a lot of talented people available. Ready, professional teams that have been working together for years. They are eager to work for Jolla, and Jolla is eager to hire them.

“If you are in this business in Finland, it is very hard to ignore Oulu” Jussi Hurmola says.

“There are both hardware, and software knowledge in Oulu. Some kind of Jolla’s product or software organisation might exist there some time soon, but we are not providing any numbers yet”

My comments: As usual, Jussi Hurmola is very careful about what he promises. But it seems, that they indeed are aiming big very soon, and also, that the company truly wants the core professionals from Nokia. This actually may become something very interesting…

Qt Office in Australia to close

Posted: 03 Aug 2012 10:22 AM PDT

By December 2012, a 60 staff office of the Qt Development Team in Brisbane is said to close (though the article also mentions August 31st).

http://www.smh.com.au/it-pro/business-it/nokia-closes-australian-development-office-20120803-23kc4.html

Lorn Potter, Senior Software Engineer at Nokia’s Brisbane office explains that the move to WP no longer requires Qt.

Lack of a Qt future at Nokia doesn’t mean the end of Qt, as it is widely used outside of mobile on Windows desktops, apps by Google, Samsung and Skype.

Upcoming MeeGo lookalike, BB10 is also using Qt.

My Dream Nokia #56: Nokia 8 WP8 Concept

Posted: 03 Aug 2012 10:10 AM PDT

Here’s MDN #56 is a very sharp, rectangular slab of straight lines.

I think the designer of this phone concept, Tobiaz Pankraz, said, “Big, thin, elegant”.  Being thin certainly helps when you have a large screened device. It makes it slightly easier to wrap your hands around the phone.

There’s no specs that I could find. More pics over at

Goodbye Metro, Hello…?

Posted: 03 Aug 2012 12:09 AM PDT

Sit back down tile haters, it’s not the actual design language from the WP interface itself that’s disappearing. Just the branding of the Metro Interface. Metro – or whatever it will be called, is here to stay for a bit, as evident by all the recent windows related products.

The Verge reports that after discussions with a ‘very important European partner’, Microsoft will discontinue the use of Metro branding across all its products. Metro may be too broad a term.

What would be a catchier name? What do you think of when you here Metro?

Trains? Newspaper? Very fashionable men?

Is the very important European partner, Nokia? What do you think Nokia wants to call it? Laatat? :P

N9Apps: Nokia Car Mode with Mirrorlink for N9/N950 available at Nokia Store

Posted: 02 Aug 2012 11:44 PM PDT

Nokia Car Mode is available for MeeGo-Harmattan – N9. Has this always been a paid app? And rather steep at £17.99?

Nokia Car Mode has been designed for in-car use to make calls, navigate to a destination, or listen to music. Enter your car, plug the phone into a MirrorLinkTM compatible infotainment system using a USB cable, and enjoy these applications on the in-car display. For making and receiving calls, the phone needs to be paired using Bluetooth with the car infotainment system. Note: Car Mode and its respective applications require a MirrorLinkTM certified car infotainment system.

Thanks crisscross for the tip!

Video: Belle vs ICS

Posted: 02 Aug 2012 11:41 PM PDT

It would probably be fairer to have FP1 (with 808′s beefier hardware) vs ICS but this is what’s shared right now, Belle on the N8 vs ICS on Xperia Arc S.

I was surprised to see gallery loading faster on the N8 even though the person in the video pressed the Arc first.

Video: Nokia 808 PureView, thunderstorm – extreme low light

Posted: 02 Aug 2012 11:35 PM PDT

Another one from Topolino70 yesterday. I’m haven’t watched it in full quality as I’m on possibly bandwidth limi eted tethered connection in my new house for about a week until internet dude comes.

Anyway, there are two videos. The first one shot with soundtrack to Far Cry. I thought there might have been some special effects going on to make it appear like a graphic equaliser. Watch how it seems to light up with the music. But in the second video you’ll see it is just the thunderstorm.

The flashes of lightning provide all the lighting to an otherwise very dark scene. It’s very different to Topolino70′s usual light, colourful videos, but captivating watch all the same.

It reminds me of a horror scene or possibly even TDKR. Every time the lightning flashes I half expect a face to appear. The audio sounds great – rich recording is doing a great job replicating one of my favourite Nature Sounds clips of rain and thunder.
