Nokia teams up with Amazon to bring Maps to Kindle, snubs google maps?

Posted: 30 Aug 2012 04:31 PM PDT

Reuters is reporting that Amazon and Nokia have got together and Nokia is providing Maps for Amazon’s forked-Android powered Kindle tablets!

http://uk.reuters.com/article/2012/08/30/us-amazon-fire-maps-idUKBRE87T1ML20120830

This is not yet official news, just ‘trusted sources’. I’m glad Nokia is slowly getting noticed for its great maps and location solutions. Hopefully, slowly but surely it can break through into culture whereby people don’t automatically say ‘google maps it’. Perhaps Nokia’s onto something with regards to being the ‘Where’ company.

Lumiappaday #288: Coloring Book demoed on the Nokia Lumia 900 (KidsApp)

Posted: 30 Aug 2012 03:20 PM PDT

This is one for the kids – a very basic colouring book. Pretty much like those magic painting books where you paint with water and everything turns into the right colour? Well in Coloring (I dislike spelling colour this way :p) Book, you have outlines of drawings. You then select a crayon colour and just touch a section. Anything within that solid line gets coloured in that way. Much like the colour fill tool in MS Paint.

Activities like this could help with hand eye coordination, colour recognition, nurture creativity and learn focus. It might be even nicer if it was possible to have a slightly more advanced mode to see brush strokes.

Note again, this is just for kids! A much more advanced drawing app is scheduled for tomorrow (currently processing now).

I think colour selection could have been made a little bit better. At the moment you flick up and that selects your crayon. I think it might be nice to have that OSX dock style so as I’m dragging my finger, the particular colour enlarges and then maintain the flick up gesture.

Video: Nokia Italy’s September 5 Teaser

Posted: 30 Aug 2012 06:17 AM PDT

Seems this video was missed yesterday. Nokia Italy posted a teaser too about the events taking place on September 5.

I don’t quite know what they’re saying, but I’m guessing the above screenshot is equivalent to stay tuned (google translate says ‘stay in the line’ in 7 days (well 6 now). There’s lumias in the mix taking the call.

Qt 5 beta released

Posted: 30 Aug 2012 04:33 AM PDT

Qt 5 Beta is released – still on the nokia.com lab blogs pages.

http://labs.qt.nokia.com/2012/08/30/qt-5-beta-is-here/

The Qt 5 Beta is now available as the first major release under the new Qt Project umbrella. A big thank you goes out to all who contributed to this milestone. With this Qt 5 beta release, I would also like to invite everybody interested to go, try, and experience this next major version of Qt. Your feedback now will be very important in making the final release of Qt 5.0 as good as possible.

It's now 15 months since we announced the start of Qt 5 development, and I am really happy to see what has been achieved during this time. All of the major architectural changes that we planned for have been implemented. At the same time, the community around Qt and qt-project.org has seen a nice and healthy growth.

Qt 5 will make it easier and faster to create:

  • Smooth, accelerated graphics performance with limited resources. Qt 5 makes better use of the GPU to deliver better performance on inexpensive hardware. For example, using Qt 5 you can achieve 60 fps performance on a $35 single-board computer like Raspberry Pi. – See the Qt on Pi project for more info.
  • Advanced UIs and applications written in QML and JavaScript. See the Qt Media Hub as an example
  • Powerful apps connected to the web

Nokia India’s facebook says something BIG is in store for you on September 5th

Posted: 30 Aug 2012 03:06 AM PDT

We’re now grasping at every little bit of information that might be able to feed us a little more truth into what’s actually going to happen on the 5th of September.

Chintan Dave shared a facebook link showing Nokia India’s page. They say something BIG is coming :p. BIG.

https://www.facebook.com/NokiaIndia

What could be BIG. The size of the phone? The sensor? The battery? Being different? Exciting?  Intense? Important?

Carl Zeiss links to Nokia’s teaser that things are about to change :)

Posted: 30 Aug 2012 02:52 AM PDT

@SirajSoft just tweeted a link to the Carl Zeiss facebook page. They mention Nokia’s little teaser and say they’re curious as to what’s about to change.

Ok, now we are curious. Any guesses what this teaser by Nokiacould be about? And what things are about to change?

https://www.facebook.com/carlzeisslenses?

Carl Zeiss must have worked on the new Lumia and it seems (or I’m hoping) they’re quietly proud of the result as they seem to agree (by sharing the teaser) that things are about to change.

Hopefully it’s not simply a Lumia branded with Carl Zeiss. I’d like to see performance that made Nokia Carl Zeiss cameras renowned in the first place. Or perhaps it’s something completely different?

Video: Father and son play Grand Waltz on Piano #NokiaTune with a twist

Posted: 30 Aug 2012 01:30 AM PDT

There’s tons of videos of people trying to play the Nokia tune on YouTube. I thought this was was pretty cool as it was a joint effort, between a father and son over two pianos.

Alexander Zlatkovski is a pianist, but his son Ariel never wanted to learn how to play until he heard his dad playing the Nokia tune - Francisco Tarrega’s “Grand Waltz/Valse”. Ariel loved the tune and learned to play it completely by ear and even spiced it up by adding ‘Skater’s Watlz’ to the beginning.

New ringtone anyone :p?

This video started out as a joke. My son Ariel, now 19, has lived with pianos – and a pianist father – all his life, but never wanted to learn to play. Then, a couple of years ago, he overheard me practicing Francisco Tarrega’s “Grand Waltz” – the source of the famous Nokia ringtone. He loved the melody and learned to play it by ear. Later, he added the beginning bars of Waldteufel’s “Skaters Waltz” to the tune, and played this hybrid to his heart’s content.

One day I decided to join him. Here is the result…
