A beautiful Nokia 808 PureView gallery by Topolino70.

Posted: 18 Aug 2012 03:38 PM PDT

We showed Topolino70′s gallery back in May, revealing some stunning 808 pictures. Tommi (Topolino70) emailed us the other day to share a new batch of photos he’s taken (consumer grade Nokia 808 PureView). I thought the pics were taken down (like what happened when we saw the gallery back in May) but it turns out my mac was having a fit.

Very beautiful selection. I’m decorating our new student house a bit and these photos would look fantastic as canvas prints. All of them!

Cheers Topolino70 for the tip!

Lumiappaday #276: 1 Second Game demoed on the Nokia Lumia 900

Posted: 18 Aug 2012 03:31 PM PDT

This is a very simple reaction style game that’s much better to play with a group of friends. First you have to keep a finger or thumb pressed on the screen. I timer will go down and any time after that a target will appear which you must touch. It’s about getting a fast reaction time.

I think I’ll move on to some XboxLive games tomorrow.

MNB RG: Lumia overtakes Symbian in Finland (StatCounter)?

Posted: 18 Aug 2012 03:40 AM PDT

This news was reported some time ago now, but I wasn’t ready to publish it as some sections of statcounter was still saying Symbian was still slightly ahead (e.g. month view vs week view vs day view). We’ve explained before and as Janne mentions below:

1) Finland – small population

2) Statcounter is all the phones, not current sales

3) Statcounter data is pretty much browser usage

It would not be such a difficult task, more something expected given that Symbian is on a decline with only the 808 as the new handset. What matters more is that Lumia is growing and that there is continued momentum.

Anyway, onto Janne’s article.

It is again time for the pointless, useless, but fun StatCounter watch! :) Finland is a small market and this means nothing, but here goes:

Lumia (basically the only Windows Phone selling anything in Finland) has been sporadically overtaking Symbian in the daily and weekly measurements for some time now, but recently it passed Symbian in the montly averages as well. Lumia is now sitting at 12.62% and Symbian in 12.43%. Growth of almost one percentage point since July. The raise so far in August has not been as steep as in July, which saw the biggest raise for Lumia ever. We can actually see in the graph how the third month after new models (new Lumias were released in February and then in very late in May, practically meaning June, in Finland) is again the worst, the same happened in back in April.

I think looking very closely at weeklies and dailies the StatCounter, we can see a real slowdown of Lumia growth happening in August though, after the exceptionally strong growth in July. Is this the first sign of the new-devices-around-the-corner slowdown we all expect but haven’t witnessed yet, or just the market evening out the July miracle jump? I think it is possible it is the former and that we won’t see significant growth until WP8 devices are released, meaning that Lumia might coast around 12% until then. We’ll see.

Meanwhile, in the Europe stats, Windows Phone is up from 1.7% (in July) to 1.85%. In the U.S. Windows Phone is up from 1.21% to 1.24%. And in China up from 0.64% to 0.88%.

In related news, in Antarctica Symbian is down from 100% (in July) to 0%. There were no other contenders.

I wasn’t expecting more videos over the weekend but it seems we have a Nokia Asha story for Saturday.

This is Monse from Mexico City.

The Me & My Asha video series tell the stories of young, urban Nokia Ashahttp://nokia.ly/PqOOpk owners around the world. These owners are cosmopolitan, highly social and aspirational. Monse is a young girl living in Mexico City. Every day she looks for things that will inspire her. She enjoys sharing her discoveries through different social networks.

Video: Twisty camera Concept Nokia 809 (MDN#63), camera barrel movement.

Posted: 18 Aug 2012 03:27 AM PDT

Many of you guys really enjoyed #63 of MyDream Nokia yesterday with Edgar’s twisting camera, honouring the past twisty barelled cameras of the N90/3250.

http://mynokiablog.com/2012/08/17/my-dream-nokia-63-41mp-pureview-twisty-camera-wp8meego-concept-with-3x-optical-zoom/

The design movies on from both N90/3250 in that only a portion of the width of the device twists, as opposed to the whole end swivelling. Some were interested in seeing that movement in action. Here’s a video to show that.

This is where Edgar creates his design. He’s moving the camera barrels in position. note that the two connecting sections are curved so can slide easily past each other. Hopefully this will not be too lose and so will remain and any angle, plus the camera is instantly activated the moment you tilt it.

Weekend Watch: More Classic Iconic Nokia TV adverts

Posted: 18 Aug 2012 03:20 AM PDT

Last week we saw some pretty awesome ancient Nokia adverts. Here are some more that have popped up, with some truly iconic devices.

http://mynokiablog.com/2012/08/11/weekend-watch-some-ancient-and-surprisingly-good-nokia-tv-adverts/

The 5210, a phone with changeable fascias.

The 3210, 3310′s older brother and the first to have a non protruding antenna. I loved the design of this phone.

The 7110, one of the first phones with mobile internet and interesting navi roller.

The Nokia 8210. Still is one of the most beautiful phones ever made. I remember really wanting to own one of these. When small was the craze, you couldn’t get smaller than the 8210.

Nokia 6210 – this means business. I remember seeing these everywhere around my parents/uncles/aunts offices.

Nokia 9210 – The communicator. The first smartphone? The first colour screen Nokia. The first all in one. Phone, computer, internet, email.

Weekend Watch: Tizmee Tizen compatibility layer for N9

Posted: 18 Aug 2012 02:18 AM PDT

For those interested, this shows a Tizen compatibility layer on the Nokia N9 so Tizen specific apps could work.

This first early release should support general HTML5 apps fairly well (although there are still a few that have issues), some aspects of the Tizen API (this is by no means complete however) and pretty much all of the Cordova/PhoneGap API.
