Lenovo A660, New Android 4.0 Smartphone With Dual SIM Support, Waterproof Case

Posted: 10 Sep 2012 12:00 PM PDT

Lenovo is having a busy month, so after announcing the IdeaPhone K860 they’re unveiling a lower end model now, the dual SIM Lenovo A660. This handset runs Android 4.0 ICS and it’s the first waterproof mobile device made by the company, with IP67 certification. This means it’s also dustproof, which is pretty cool as well.

Lenovo A660 supports 3G connectivity on both SIMs, has a 4 inch WVGA Gorilla Glass display, a 5 megapixel camera at the back and a VGA front camera. It also has a 1 GHz dual core processor, a 1500 mAh battery and the handset is 10.5 mm thin, which is not that great of an achievement considering there are sub 7 mm phones out there. The device comes in a variation of colors and for now the price and launch date are a real mystery.

The handset looks like a Samsung Xcover alternative to me, especially for the right price. It also seems to have a custom UI, the one that we also saw on the IdeaPad and ThinkPad tablets, but in a more cartoonish version. Hopefully it won’t get in the way of the standard Android experience.

Alibaba Aliyun OS Aims at Being the Chinese Android Alternative (Video)

Posted: 10 Sep 2012 02:36 AM PDT

Alibaba is a famous Internet business in China that covers online marketplaces and payment platforms, as well as a shopping search engine and cloud computing. Last summer they announced their expansion into the mobile OS field with Aliyun OS, that has now reached the point where it’s called the “Android of China”. This is a Linux-based, that offers a decent alternative for local phone makers.

Aliyun OS debuted last year on the K-Touch W700 phone and after 3 years in the making the platform looks pretty good. Aliyun OS is based on the clouding computing services from Alibaba for features like email, maps, GPS, backups, contacts, texts storage, photos and more. A report from Sohu IT revealed today that the OS is gaining traction among phone makers in Asia. The total number of smartphone vendors adopting Aliyun is supposed to increase to five from the current two, that are Haier and K-Touch.

The name of the new vendors remains a mystery for now. A reason to go with Aliyun instead of Android is that in China Google Search, Google Maps and Gmail are limited, so you don’t get their full functionality. When working on Aliyun apps third party developers can opt to develop cloud apps over their own servers or use the AliCloud infrastructure for the task. You get a decent view of the OS in the video below, if you’re curious:

iPhone 5 Will Not Feature that Rumored NFC Chip

Posted: 10 Sep 2012 01:31 AM PDT

It’s the iPhone 5 week that’s just started and it brings a lot of leaks, I’m sure of that. The latest of them shows the iPhone 5 internals again, this time dismissing the rumors about the NFC chip inside the handset. Let me remind you that the new Apple phone is launching on September 12th and the wait and rumor mill will be over then.

NFC is a feature that has become a standard on modern devices, so it’s expected on the new iPhone as well. Recently surfaced photos of the iPhone 5 internals showed a mysterious square cover, that was rumored to host the NFC chip. However the guys of SonnyDickson have come up with extra info and photos, showing that under the black cover there’s actually no NFC chip. That metal bracket is only used to hold the front facing Facetime camera, proximity sensor and earpiece speaker.

So, one more rumor is down, but I still believe the NFC chip could be hidden somewhere else under the hood. People were also speculating about a fingerprint sensor, but how useful is that on an iPhone? People barely use that on laptops, let alone handsets…
