Video: Nokia Lumia 900 torture test

Posted: 25 Sep 2012 05:05 PM PDT

This was filmed, possibly a few months ago, but it’s completely new to me, so it might be to a few others.

It’s a torture test from CNET. The first few tests made me doubt it was real and not a spoof about invincible Nokias.

  • Freezer for 2 hours. Survives
  • Oven for 200 degrees. Survives. (This really had me doubting it until I realised, US video, Fahrenheit perhaps?)
  • Hammer test (like that viral video) actually can hammer in a nail with it. Phone not cracked not even any scratches even after hammering in another nail. He says ‘unbelievable, you can’t do that with an iPhone” though he doesn’t like that it’s a WP. Polycarbonate took some hits but the glass hasn’t smashed unlike some other phones when you look at them wrong.
  • Drop test. Survives. Screen unscratched, not broken. Nice bit of GG action.
  • Pool test.  Not turning on. Rice drying probably needs more than 20 minutes. Ah water, Kryptonite of some Nokias (not all.

We need a bit of the classic ruggedness in future Nokia smartphones perhaps.

At least it’s strong enough that a 2 year old can’t scratch it.

Phil Schiller from Apple does not offer any help to affected iPhone users who’s iPhones scuff easily or even out of the box. Apparently it’s normal.

Over time perhaps but not immediately from the box. N8′s anodised Aluminium was quite good. It stood up to scratch tests but it was’t anywhere near as good as matte polycarbonate on the non white N9/800/900.

Video: Innovative Nokia Lumia 920 vs New iPhone 5 body comparison (WP8 demo on October 25)

Posted: 25 Sep 2012 03:01 PM PDT

/Eugen for the English speaking audience of WP7Forum.ru records a very nice side by side comparison of the innovative Nokia Lumia 920 and the new iPhone 5.

They were not allowed to demo WP8 features because Microsoft were still scoffing away at their donuts. You’ll see the features apparently on October 25, launch date for W8, a few days before Oct 29 launch of WP8.

Holding in the hand, apparently it’s a matter of taste. He says he won’t judge the UI before completely testing.

Also note the position of the arrow. I think it might be better this way because I still keep seeing folks pressing the arrow as a button when a swipe to the right is just easier.

Nokia Sweden edits date from Lumia YouTube video, “21.10.12″?

Posted: 25 Sep 2012 02:22 PM PDT

I saw this on my break, and as did Ahmed Prince who took some screenshots of the original video title. A video from Nokia Sweden originally titled

Piskad av Nokia Lumia 21.10.12 – it seems to be another smoked by Lumia title wise, but I don’t understand the date of 21.10.12. It rings a bell because the new Nokia Lumia 920 was rumoured to appear on that date and it’s the first time that date has been recognised by a Nokia source. Whether that’s relevant to the Lumia 920 still remains to be seen.

http://mynokiablog.com/2012/09/19/nokia-lumia-920-possibly-coming-sooner-than-end-of-the-year-october-21st-any-good/

I’m looking forward to smoked by Lumia when it’s with the 920 with some hardware tests. e.g. sensitivity of the screen, video stabilisation tests, dark room tests etc, as well as whatever enhancement MS might have bothered with (who knows, for all we know they’ve just been eating donuts and licking the sugar off their thumb. It seems based on the fact that we just keep seeing demoes of tile resizing, that’s all they’ve done).

Is it even a date or the score of the tally chart on his back?

Cheers Ahmed Prince for the tip!

Video: Lumia 920 vs. iPhone 5 (Actual Footage)

iPhone 5 and Nokia Lumia 920 face off with image stabilization test handson video

I think it’s fair to say that the Engadget people are having a blast in Espoo, playing with all of Nokia’s latest toys; here’s a video sample of the iphone 5 pitted up against the Lumia 920:

Honestly the quality on both videos suck so I’m assuming that they were compressed, if we’re only looking at stabilization then the 920 is amazing as expected (except towards the end it seemed to Jump/frames rather than shake?)- but once again it’s a prototype device.

Interview With Elop (Filmed with Lumia 920!) Thoughts on HTC, Pureview & Ashas

Posted: 25 Sep 2012 11:19 AM PDT

Image

Engadget have gone full out covering Nokia’s homeland and taking the tours, here’s an interesting interview with Elop filmed with the Lumia 920 (first ever video sample, sound is recorded on an external mic. though-still a prototype device though) the quality is pretty impressive, almost no shakes at all; as if it was filmed on a tripod crane.

http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/25/nokia-ceo-stephen-elop-lumia-920-interview/

Elop touches on HTC’s copy catting once again sating that alot more goes into a device than just the colors, but says this proves that Nokia are the new “trend setters” which honestly can’t be denied. When asked about the naming of HTC’s devices (Windows Phone 8X), he points out that Lumai devices are a special breed of Windows Phones, and that’s what Nokia have to offer, the Windows Phone experience on a Nokia. On the topic of the current range of Lumia devices NOT getting WP 8 Elop was quick to point out that these devices are NOT EOL (end of life), and that they will continue to improve these devices.

On the topic of PureView Elop hinted at newer versions of PureView coming to “lower price-points” calling the 808 & 920 “building blocks” for their Photography’s future.

Nokia N9 much? BlackBerry’s BB10 Alpha B

Posted: 25 Sep 2012 10:32 AM PDT

I thought it was just me but the top comment (and several others) on Engadget are commenting that BB’s dev unit looks like a Nokia N9.

There are certainly some resemblances. It seems there are two designs that apparently exist in the world. An iPhone or a Nokia.

Engadget takes a trip to Nokia House, reminisces the great Nokias

Posted: 24 Sep 2012 11:59 PM PDT

More Engadget news – this time we can see Myriam who is at Nokia House.

This is the wall of old Nokia phones (there’s also a room full of them in Nokia Lounge)

http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/24/engadget-visits-nokia-house-walks-down-memory-lane-video/

Odd fact: These classy looking white orchids at Nokia House were pretty swish, I decorated my room with them to get a touch of Nokia House at Uni.

Cheers  DKM for the tip!
