ZTE V8000 Coming to Cricket, Spotted at the FCC

Posted: 15 Sep 2012 01:08 PM PDT

The FCC has given us an interesting device to glance at, while they approved it: ZTE V8000. The device is coming to Cricket and it’s pictured below. In order to figure out what carrier this device will work on, you just need to look at the bands the handset is working on, shown by the FCC documents.

The device has 4 navigation keys, the usual Menu, Home, Back and Search from back in the days before Android 4.0. There seems to be an 8 megapixel camera on the phone and we also get Muve Music, SRS Audio and obviously the ZTE branding. The specs of the ZTE V8000 have leaked previously and they include a 4 inch 800 x 480 pixels display and a 1.4 GHz single core processor. A 1900 mAh battery is also in the mix and Android 4.0 ICS is the OS of choice here.

We have no info about the price or availability of the phone. Internal storage is pretty light, at 1.1 GB, but at least we get a microSD card slot on the device. What’s interesting is that ZTE’s specifications include HD Voice and so far Sprint is the only carrier in that region to get HD Voice, so maybe we can also expect it on this carrier.

HP Smartphone Now In the Making, Confirms HP CEO, Meg Whitman

Posted: 15 Sep 2012 11:40 AM PDT

Right after the HP Bender Android smartphone leaked, here goes Meg Whitman, HP CEO saying that the company she runs is actually working on a smartphone, after all. For a while now, HP has been pulling uncertain moves regarding their mobile segment, that seemed shut down for a while. The WebOS strategy is gone, so it’s all Android from now, I supposed.

Seeing how HP gave up on Microsoft and their Windows RT initiative, they could be straying from Microsoft and getting closer to Google, in order to implement Android on their upcoming handset more easily. Meg Whitman said that the company she runs will provide in the future every type of computing device possible, from desktops, to laptops, tablets, convertibles and smartphones. Most of these products are already available, but the smartphone is not right now.

The CEO said that in many countries of the world, the smartphone is the “first computing device” and there are countries out there where people won’t own a tablet or PC, but they will rely on a smartphone. We have no details regarding the smartphone, that could still use what’s left of the webOS initiative, if the Android cooperation is not ready to take off. The HP Pre and Veer were actually nice devices, that had underwhelming specs sadly and poor marketing. Will the newcomer succeed?

HP Bender Android Smartphone Spotted in Benchmarks, Sounds Great!

Posted: 15 Sep 2012 02:34 AM PDT

Now we can make sense of why HP was so cold when it came to Windows RT and rejected being a Microsoft partner on that. They may have been waiting out on Google and Android, as shown by an amazing recent leak, showing a HP Android smartphone called Bender in a benchmark. GLBenchmark test results show the handset hp bender with android 4.0 ICS on board.

Also, it claims it has a dual core Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor on board, which is great news. I sure hope that the Palm design will be re-used, since it had a lot of potential. With webOS pretty much gone now, Android is the only choice that makes sense. Android 4.0.4 is shown in the benchmark here and if everything goes right, the handset could even end up with Jelly Bean. Leaks also show a nice 1366 x 720 pixel resolution, which is great for a modern smartphone.

That’s all we know about the HP Bender right now, but I can bet it has 1 GB of RAM, at least an 8 megapixel camera and maybe some unique HP apps to set it apart from the competition. Of course, this could be a mere prototype, or maybe HP is making a device for some other company out there, who knows?

LG Optimus G Gets Its First Commercial in Korea, Focused on Camera (Video)

Posted: 15 Sep 2012 01:48 AM PDT

LG Optimus G is one of the most talked about smartphones of the moment, since it’s among the first to bring a quad core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, after all. There’s an LG event next week, meant to unveil this new handset to the public and press, but till then we get the first commercial for the Optimus G, that was shown in Korea, the homeland of LG.

The ad is very short, less than 20 seconds and focuses on the ways this smartphone makes your life more entertaining. It’s focused on features like the camera and simply having fun with the phone. We’re dealing with a 4.7 inch smartphone, that will have to arrive on the market quickly if it wants to be a hit. LG already screwed up once this year, when they unveiled the first quad core phone in the world in February and only managed to launch it this summer. At this rate, if the LG Optimus G follows the same path, it would arrive in February, but I hope I’m wrong.

Anyway, you should know that this phone comes with 2 GB of RAM, a 4.7 inch IPS display with a 1280 x 768 pixel resolution, Android 4.0.4 and a 13 megapixel camera. An interesting thing to see in action would be the Adreno 320 GPU on this device, that should provide killer graphics for the latest game in the Google Play Store. We’ll have to wait and see…

Samsung Galaxy Note II Debuting on AT&T on the Same Day as the Nokia Lumia 920/820 (Video)

Posted: 15 Sep 2012 01:30 AM PDT

Usually AT&T got hyper excited when a new iPhone was launched, but now there are bigger fish to fry. In this case there are about 3 of them: Samsung Galaxy Note II, Nokia Lumia 920 and Nokia Lumia 820. The carrier will release all 3 new models on the same date of October 21st, so customers will get a varied choice for their pre-holiday shopping.

Samsung Galaxy Note II features a big 5.5 inch display, as you probably know already and this phablet comes with a new generation of S Pen, a quad core Exynos CPU and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. The Note II will come to AT&T complete with 4G LTE connectivity and it will have an 8 megapixel camera at the back. The Lumia lineup had October 21st and November 2nd rumored as release dates, but now it appears that the first one will be real. It wouldn’t make much sense for AT&T to launch rivalling products on the same day, since they would cannibalize each other.

However, the products are targeted to different niches. We’ve got the Lumia 920 with PureView camera, OIS technology, dual core Snapdragon S4 CPU and Windows Phone 8, as the 4.5 inch smartphone with big price. Then we’ve got the phablet, for those who want more than a phone and we’ve also got the slightly more affordable Lumia 820.
