This is Why I Love @Nokia, Also Why Samsung Sucks

Posted: 02 Sep 2012 01:59 PM PDT

Ok, so the following story isn’t strictly Nokia related, but it’s well worth a read; especially considering how it involves our good friend Clinton Jeff, from unleashthephones (who’s my official “blogger buddy”). As you guys might be aware, sometimes for big events like MWC, IFA, CES etc. Tech companies offer to fly in some bloggers on their dime so they can help provide coverage to the reveals of the event, as you’ll read very clearly in the story they can’t really FORCE you to work for them if you don’t agree on it, and most companies have the common sense and courtesy not to ask you to.

Since CJ’s story is a bit longer, let me start with mine story-last February, back at MWC Nokia offered to fly some of the MNB team all the way to Spain to cover the events going down there, I went as both Michael and Jay were busy with school or other business. Without going into too much detail while there Nokia took care of EVERYTHING from taxis, to food, to hotel to actual walks in the park so we could see the sites, just so we could have a good time. What did they ask in return? Nothing, in return we preformed our duties as  journalists and covered whatever we felt like covering (keep in mind other non-Nokia blogs were there such as Smashpop, SamPullen, WPCentral), never did they tell us what to focus on or what to ignore, they gave us free reign to do whatever we wanted and cover whatever we wanted (such as entering the 808 against the Lumia in the smoked challenge). While on the showgrounds the staff who were with us  encouraged us to walk around and take a look at the other booths, and generally have a good time (texting us to let us know when there was something interesting going down at the Nokia booth, such as a prize giveaway).

While there they didn’t ask us to wear any sort of uniform that specified that we were from Nokia, not even a name tag; and after the keynote of the first day they told us we were free to do whatever we want (and even go back home).

Name tag we walked around with, no-where does it say Nokia (except the blogs name); I personally switched out the ZTE sponsored Lanyards for a free Nokia one

Now with that pleasant experience in mind read how Samsung literally screwed CJ and a couple other bloggers over, making them choose between being “Booth babes” (CJ’s words) or being stranded in Berlin without plane tickets or a hotel room.

"We got a call from Samsung India saying 'You can either be a part of this and wear the uniform, or you'll have to get your own tickets back home and handle your hotel stay from the moment this call ends…

A few minutes later, we got a call from the Samsung India guy who said that our flights on the 6th have been cancelled, and that they're bringing us back on the 1st instead. But this is only if, and only if, we agreed to wear atleast the samsung branded shirt at the unpacked event, and not blog about any of this incident.

"None of this should leave Berlin. Or Reach India" – Clinton Jeff

Read the full detailed account of  the disgusting event here: http://thenextweb.com/insider/2012/09/02/heres-samsung-flew-bloggers-halfway-around-world-threatened-leave/

While typing this post CJ tweeted:

So Nokia who have virtually no presence in IFA, helped out a stranded blogger who was there covering another companies events, as well as his friend who they never met before. THIS is what makes us love Nokia, they aren’t some faceless corporate company, they can be loved; because they let us love them. We might not be going to Nokia World in New York this year, but at least I know that if I went I’d have a plane ticket back no matter what I chose to blog or tweet about their event.

(Check out Unleashthephones.com later for more details about how Nokia helped CJ out).

Exclusive: Leaked Images of RM-581 “Columbus” Harmattan Prototype – N8-esque from 2009

Posted: 02 Sep 2012 10:56 AM PDT

I was just sent this in, and the email is already dead. So the info is limited. What we have is a Protoype, supposedly from 2009, that ran Maemo6, more commonly known as MeeGo-Harmattan. Remember the post I wrote about the various prototypes in production? Well this is the Prototype I was told styled off N8, however, if this was from 2009, I believe the N8 was styled off this!

It is interesting to note the device branding shows the intention on making this a landscape oriented device. I don’t want to dwell on the fact that if Harmattan was on devices in 2009, the game may be different. I will point out, that from what I had seen of Harmattan concepts before N9 release, the UI and UX was quite different.

You can clearly see the NSeries branding, so this may have been the original N8. Looking at the camera lens beneath the “og”, it says AF 12MP. It is safe to assume it had the same Camera Module as the N8. 12MP in 2009! It was crazy in 2010, and if it were on the market a whole year earlier, I don’t think the mobile industry would be the same as today. Plus, it ran Harmattan! A bloody advanced mobile OS today (even without Swipe), let alone back then. I could easily go on about that for hours, but I wont.

Continuing with the earlier idea of landscape use, you can see there is an interesting take on a kickstand, that seems to integrate, at least in my opinion, very well with the design on the phone. Keep in mind, the N900 launched in 2009, so it isn’t too hard to see the influence, whether the N900 influenced this, or was influenced by, is anyone’s guess. Also, is it just me, or does that FFC sensor look big?

The last two images I have are of the device’s side. Above you can see the sim card slot. For some reason, the bottom housing on the device has been removed. It is more intriguing to me, as it it makes you ask why? What was special? In the image below, you can see the other side profile. It shows off the volume rocker, dedicated camera key, and the top looks like a power/lock button of some kind.

So there you have it, first pictures of the RM-581 Columbus. The reason it was cancelled, according to my email, was that Harmattan was finished yet.

What do you guys think?

@TomWarren Shoots Down 41Mp Lumia; Mums the Word on 21Mp ;)

Posted: 02 Sep 2012 10:50 AM PDT

Tom Warren from the verge has been teasing us about info on a PureView Lumia for quite a while now, previously telling us to stay tuned on Sunday for more information. Well today is Sunday, yet nothing has appeared (in fact it’s been uncomfortably quiet on the leaks front); but according to Tom there was suppose to be a Lumia teaser (I assume it was PureView related) by Nokia today, but it got scrapped:

If anyone is wondering what the stay tuned meant I believe he was referring to the leak of the lumia 610s successor, the Lumia Glory. The way I see it (of course I’m reading into things a bit too much here) but Tom told us not to expect a 41Mp Lumia 920, well none of us were expecting that, but what about a 21 Mp Lumia 920? It’s worth it to give Tom a follow on Twitter, just in case something does “spill”

Thanks everyone who sent this in :D

Video: Nokia Purity Pro Wireless Hands-On

Posted: 02 Sep 2012 10:30 AM PDT

Nokia Purity Pro

Once again we rely on CJ’s coverage of IFA to get our dose of Nokia related new, this time a hands-on of the newly announced Nokia Purity Pro Wireless. The design is essentially the same as the previous version (no point playing with perfection), except for the lack of permanent cord  (they can be used wired if you like) and the addition of a bluetooth pairing button.

They charge via a microUSB port, with battery life for over 24 hours of music listening with ANC turned on. If you turn off the Noise Cancellation you'll probably get a lot more if these are anything like the BH-905. And like the 905′s these have a wired port as well, so you can listen to music even if your headphones run out of battery.

Purity Pro Wireless Headset By Nokia + Monster Released at IFA

Posted: 02 Sep 2012 06:10 AM PDT

Monster_Purity_FAMILY

I guess all Nokia accessories are getting a refresh this year, as earlier this week we saw the PlayTo 360 become PlayUp with JBL, now Nokia Conv. are reporting that the updated version of the Purity HD Headset has arrived, minus the pesky cable. The Purity Pro Wireless connects over Bluetooth/NFC and is available in red, yellow, white and black. The headsets active noise cancelling and Bluetooth automatically switch on when unfolded, and turn off again when folded away. As to be expected with premium headsets such as these, that carry not just the Nokia branding but the Monster name as well, they are quite pricing starting at approximately €299 (376 USD) Availability begins in 4th Quarter of 2012.

It’s interesting to see the available colors for the headset, once again we have the inclusion of the new Yellow, and the exclusion of the Magenta; however unlike the PlayUp the Cyan has been replaced with the striking red you see above. More evidence of the new colors in upcoming lumia line?

*Note: These are exactly what I’ve been looking for since unfortunately the pair of Purity HDs I have died on me, I think the connector in the headpiece itself has gotten loose somehow, as switching out the cable didn’t help any, also unfortunately they’re not supported by nokia Care here, so no help there.

Rumor: Lumia 610 Successor “Glory” to Launch with WP7.8 Later This Year?

Posted: 02 Sep 2012 05:56 AM PDT

Even though we’re only 3 days away from Sept. 5th, we’ve only seen actual evidence of two upcoming devices, the Lumia 820/Arrow and the 920/Phi. However the Verge report that Nokia have a successor to the low end Lumia 610 in stock set for later release, their source claims that the Successor code named “Glory” will not be announced at this weeks events, but may be available before the holiday season this year. Interestingly though the report also states that the Glory will run WP7.8 instead of WP 8, which personally leaves me very skeptical about the truth of this rumor. Glory is supposedly coming with a 4″ screen, 256 MB of Ram and a 800 Mhz processor.

If true we could be witnessing a new trend coming form Nokia, which is upping the screen sizes, I don’t think there are any other low-end devices out there that carry a 4″ screen, this along with the supposed 4.3-4.6″ of the Arrow seem to point to Nokia going with a “Bigger is Better” concept. Personally I approve, but I know alot of people out there think that the Lumia 900 is far too big for actual use, and prefer to stick it out with the 710 or 800. Also let’s not forget that bigger glass = More expensive phone, which doesn’t really help keep those prices low.

Personally I don’t see this one coming true, I can understand if Nokia chose to continue pushing the current line of WP devices even after the release of WP8, but releasing a new device running last years platform? Sounds very Androidy to me. What do you guys think?

Nokia 808 PureView vs Samsung Galaxy Camera

Posted: 02 Sep 2012 01:36 AM PDT

You may be interested to see how the Android powered Samsung Camera, the Galaxy Camera performs against the Nokia 808 PureView.

CJ from Unleashthephones has some samples to share.

http://unleashthephones.com/2012/09/01/samsung-galaxy-camera-vs-nokia-808-pureview-camera-samples/

Clinton’s verdict?

I'd still say the PureView is the best camera phone you can get right now, because it is. The Galaxy Camera is nice and all, but for the price you could get an actual camera with way better specs instead of opting for this one, which you have to admit, has okay/average results at best. If you choose a PureView, you probably want a slim (ish) phone that is always there with you, that you can take out and take a picture of your friends any time, any where.

With the Galaxy camera, you still have a bulky camera, that is another accessory to carry along with your phone.

Cheers for the tip, Jill

MNB Reader Generated: “A request to Nokia fans” (+Rambles)

Posted: 02 Sep 2012 01:27 AM PDT

We received an email from MNB Reader and Nokia fan, Musadar, which included a heartfelt message to Nokia fans. It asks pretty much for the infighting between fans to stop, to move on from the past and to begin celebrating the positives at Nokia again. It’s a nice message though I do understand how some may still feel hurt. Contrary to the message, I approve of criticism – the positive criticism designed to give feedback and realistic solutions – not simply criticism to whine/moan/insult. It’s great to have a healthy polite conversation where problems are discussed openly, all in the pursuit of making sure Nokia improves. Why? Because we’re Nokia fans. It’s what we do. I love Nokia and I love the Nokia community of Nokia fans and people that work for Nokia or work closely with Nokia. Who else brings as much frustrations, drama, disappointment, speculations, history, surprise, excitement, pure elated joy – all for a brand of a phone?

For me, I’m became a Nokia fan because many years ago they were the symbol of the best of the best, always a driving force in pushing mobile further. Perhaps you have many years of fond memories using your Nokias with your friends and family. Perhaps it was your Nokia that entertained, brought laughter, connected you with friends, saved your butt, allowed to to express yourself, recorded precious memories and connected with other Nokia fans. Nokia was the ultimate brand that I could trust above all others to deliver what I wanted. Cutting edge, head turning designs, robust, reliable and desirable to all.

Nokia fans are very patient. They have ben accustomed to waiting, something is coming soon, something better is around the corner, it will get better eventually. But everyone has their limits and fans often come and go. Some Nokia fans may be fans of technology in general and go with whatever is popular or suited them best. It’s completely understandable that once Nokia fell out of favour and out of sync with their needs, these fans would move on to something else.

Nokia fell, not really for lack of talent, but due to poor decisions. They always had it in them to keep producing the best devices, but one wrong direction and inappropriate compromises just led to another. Each year it happens, Nokia gets weaker whilst the competition grows stronger. Despite the set backs, I remain a Nokia fan because of the glimmers of brilliance that appears every now again that reminds me, ‘Hey, that’s the Nokia I know and love’. I’m a fan of Nokia, more than just for the brand but what it represents for me, their history, their potential, the community army of fans they have built around them. These guys (good or bad) aren’t here simply to get their phone in your hands, but to properly deliver the best experience (e.g. performances of their camera phones, N8/808 – uncompromising quality). And neither are they the guys who give up. In their history, Nokia has been changing over and over, not as a sign of weakness or giving up but strength in being able to adapt. The mobile world is one of the toughest climates to survive in. Failure to adapt, failure to thrive and with Nokia unable to respond quickly and appropriately saw a big set back. But there’s still an opportunity to get back up. Not immediately back to the very top as that will take time, and perhaps that might not be something we would se. However, Nokia can get straight back to producing products that delight millions consumers and inspire a new generation of Nokia fans.

Good luck to all Nokia fans for September 5th, may we keep, get new ones and even reclaim lost ones back to the fold :p.

Anyway, my intro went a little long there. Onto the letter:

A request to Nokia fans
There are a huge number of unhappy Nokia fans out there. These people have been loyal Nokia fans
for long time. The cause of unhappiness being the new direction the company has taken and other
decisions that have also been made. A lot of emotions and feelings are involved as these people
really see themselves as loyal Nokia fans. Many of these unhappy fans have for some time now
criticised Nokia publically on different blogs and are still doing so. They feel like they have been
abandoned by Nokia. I am also personally a big Nokia fan and I too have my own disagreements with
Nokia. Therefore I fully understand all these fans. I really do. I have for some time now been
following and reading on this matter on different blogs and news sites. I think now is the good timing to raise my voice and say my opinion on this matter.

If you are a Nokia fan, whether happy or unhappy, you will have to admit one thing. Nokia is in a
really difficult position right now and is struggling to get back in to the fight. This is where all the
debates and discussions start. Some people say that blame for Nokia being in this position goes to
the current Nokia CEO and poor decisions made by him. Some people say the problems started much  before the current CEO. Some people say it's because of the "burning memo". Others say it's because  of Nokia abandoning Symbian and Meego. Others again say that it is because Nokia chose to go with only one mobile OS, which is Windows Phone. There are so many reasons and opinions about what went wrong and why Nokia is in such a difficult position. Most of the people who are putting these opinions forward are not happy with Nokia.

Dear Nokia fans, if you are part of the group that is unhappy with Nokia and have been criticising
Nokia in the blogosphere, I understand you. I am not saying you are wrong and I am not saying your
reasons for criticising Nokia are wrong. If Nokia had acted differently maybe they would not have
been in their current position. Nokia could have been in a totally different position, much better than the current one or much worse than the current one. We simply don't know that. Would Nokia have been in a better position today if there had been no burning memo? Maybe. Would Nokia have been in a better position if they had gone for Meego? Maybe. Would Nokia have been in a better position today if they had gone with Android? Maybe. I do not want to discuss these things over again and to be honest I don't think that there is any point and sense in discussing these things anymore.

Whatever the reason for Nokia being in their current state, we can't do anything about it. Nokia did
what they thought was best for the company. We are just seeing the company from the outside. We
don't know what is really going on internally and why Nokia made the decisions it made. We might
not agree with Nokia and we might not be happy with the current state of Nokia, but we are still
Nokia fans. So if we can't change the Nokia past, can we change the Nokia future? Maybe. At least
we can try to make a little difference to help Nokia or rather at least we should try as Nokia fans to
make a little difference to help Nokia.
Dear Nokia fans, it is time to move on. We can't keep criticising and bashing Nokia publically as this is not good for Nokia. Do we want to see Nokia go down or do we want to see a Nokia comeback?

If we don't stop criticising and bashing Nokia over and over again, then we are not helping Nokia and are therefore no better than the persons who we blame in the first place. Nokia might not have Symbian and Meego anymore, but Nokia is still building high quality phones with amazing designs. In fact,Nokia won a lot of design prizes in 2012. Nokia is still leading on the camera front and the location services.

Nokia needs our full support. If we truly are Nokia fans and we truly want to see Nokia back in the
game then we should get behind Nokia and help them by giving them positive publicity around the
web instead of negative. We need to recommend Nokia smartphones to friends and relatives as much as we can. We need to talk positively about Nokia around the web. Nokia need all the good
publicity they can get. There is a need for good hype and buzz around Nokia and its products. Nokia
will soon be launching their new Windows Phone 8 devices and this is the perfect time to start
helping Nokia. These are just my personal thoughts and my only motivation for writing this post is
that I am a Nokia fan and really want Nokia to do a comeback. I am sure many of you also want the
same for Nokia. You can choose to either agree or disagree with me, we are all individuals and as
such entitled to our own opinions. Thanks.

Full Moon pics with the Nokia 808 PureView

Posted: 02 Sep 2012 01:12 AM PDT

Faisal baset emailed us on Friday to share some stunning pictures he took of the moon using a telescope. This was a cropped image taken from the 808.

Hi, I just took a photo of tonight’s full moon with my Nokia 808 Pureview and an astronomical telescope D=50mm, F=350mm + K12mm Field 48 lens. I think it is worth sharing in your website.

His whole flickr Gallery is worth taking a look at.

Cheers Faisal baset for the tip.
