Greenday Set to Officially Kick Off Nokia Music in US, Come Sept. 15th

Posted: 08 Sep 2012 12:19 PM PDT

Nokia, AT&T and Green Day join forces for Nokia Music launch event in NYC

The popular brand GreenDay (I personally haven’t ever listened to them) are set to kick off Nokia Music in the US on Sept. 15th with a debut of their latest Album (even -though you can get Nokia Music RIGHT NOW). The band is set to play in sponsorship by Nokia and At&t at Irving Plaza in New York City on the 15th of September, you can win tickets by competing in the usual sharing/spreading the word on facebook in the link down Below:

http://www.facebook.com/greenday

So who do you guys rather have release a Nokia product Niki Minaj (for the 900) or Greenday? Or do you have someone else in mind who could properly represent Nokia?

*Note: At&ts continued partnership with Nokia is a strong sign that the Lumia 920 or the 820 (possibly both?) will be headed towards them. Personally I’m hoping for some Verizon action as well; maybe a Lipstick Red Lumia 920 to match their Big Red Logo?

Video: Topolino70: Shadows and Lights, Ports and Shores

Posted: 08 Sep 2012 10:56 AM PDT

It takes skill to take simple everyday things and make them look stunning. That needs a great camera to capture those moments and a great vision by the person holding that camera.

As usual, we have Topolino70 showing us how it’s done. From N8, to E7 to 808.

Shadows danced at our living room as the sun shined brightly behind wind waving trees and fast moving clouds.

Shot with Nokia 808 and with Velbon C-600 tripod. Edited using Sony Vegas 11.

The Edward Scissor hands style music really suits the last third of this video.

Somehow I am always drawn making videos near to lakes or water generally and it’s no wonder: What other element can be so interesting and dynamic than water?

Scenes seen at video are shot from Lahti and Tampere, Finland.

Videos shot using Nokia 808 pureview + Velbon C-600 tripod. No other lenses attached. Video edited using Sony Vegas 11. I adjusted brightness and contrast with many clips seen on video since I shot them accidentally with too low contrast (to my taste :) )

Mini PhotoShoot: Lumia 920 + Accessories

Posted: 08 Sep 2012 07:11 AM PDT

Here’re some more glamorous photos of the stunning yellow Lumia 920 paired alongside the newly released accessories; even though we’ve already seen these I thought it was worth a share (BTW these were taken with the 808, but I had to compress them as they were 10MB each!).

(As usual click on the image for a higher res version)

That screen really does look amazing, especially with the yellow/black contrast created by the poly-carbonate design vs. the Bezzel

In case you forgot above is the JBL PlayUP paired along with the Purity HD Wireless, I must say I never thought I’d want a yellow accessory of any sort; but I gots the Banana fever!

Finally we have the complete set up, showing off the PlayUps bigger brother the JBL PowerUp which connects via NFC while juicing up your phone wirelessly, the yellow pillow is the FatBoy wireless Charging pillow; also present are the plate Wireless charging as well as Stand wireless charger.

What’s your prefect Phone/Accessory combination? I’m torn between the 920/Purity HD Wireless or the 920/JBL PowerUp

Thanks to Justin B for the awesome pics!

Check out the all new Nokia Asha 112 and 110 with super Facebook capabilities. Now all your friends right in your pocket with these latest phones from Nokia.

Well, what makes facebook popular is that everyone is on there and you can’t get more universal in terms of availability to all than these Asha.

MNB RG: Damian Dinning: Lumia 920 vs. 808 PureView

Posted: 08 Sep 2012 01:57 AM PDT

Janne’s back now discussing a popular topic amongst Nokia and non Nokia fans. How does the Nokia Lumia 920 (with PureView) stack up against Nokia 808 PureView. Janne checks out tweets by Nokia’s imaging Guru, Damian Dinning, to explain the differences with experience and knowledge of both devices.

Since this is a hot topic on MNB (http://mynokiablog.com/2012/09/06/pollbattle-of-the-pureviews-lumia-920-vs-808-pureview-which-do-you-prefer/), let’s see what The Man says.

On Twitter Nokia’s camera guru-in-chief Damian Dinning (https://twitter.com/PhoneDaz) explained the different benefits of Lumia 920 and 808 technologies:

“Received lots of questions this week re #PureView #808 vs #920. Going to need to do this over a number of tweets, here goes…

1. in situations where camera movement is not an issue #808 will provide more detailed images with less noise due to oversampling…

1….where camera movement is evident for either stills (typically low light) or videos #920 will be better due to OIS

2. In low light if devices are handheld and used in auto #920 will be better due to OIS – no blur and brighter images.

2….if #808 is used in night mode or manual ISO allowing speeds to 2.7secs and supported it will provide better images due to oversampling

3. In video, for most people, due to OIS you’ll get smoother looking videos with #920

3. #808 however in video does provide lossless zoom oversampling due to high res sensor

4. in terms of audio recording, the difference is mono in the #920 vs #808 which is stereo.

5. #808 due to high res sensor has lossless zoom in stills and as already mentioned also in video.

6. #920 thanks to the new capabilities of the #WP8 platform can use ‘lens’ apps. This allows greater extension of the camera capabilities

6….you’ll see this at launch with some cool lenses from #Nokia such as Smart Shoot and Cinemagraph, wih more to come in the future”

Note: Apparently the concensus on audio is that 920 indeed has the high-volume rich recording of 808, but in mono only instead of stereo.

The 920 is a smartphone with a really good camera. The Nokia 808 PureView is pretty much an uncompromising cameraphone. Different people will have different needs.

Cheers Janne.

Weekend Watch: Nokia World 2012 keynote – Nokia Lumia 920/820 launch

Posted: 08 Sep 2012 01:31 AM PDT

In case you missed it or just want to watch it again, here’s the 2 hour keynote from 05.09.12.

It wasn’t the best keynote ever, as evident by my post about my annoyances with it.

mynokiablog.com/2012/09/06/some-annoyances-from-yesterdays-keynote-will-revisit-when-i-have-more-time/

However, taking another quick glance at it, they have made some small improvements.  I’ve already started putting together an article that revisits that post linked above but tries to be more proactive with my criticism/suggestions as it seems we cant leave anything out to chance. Hopefully I’ll have time to get that out by Monday.

Nokia Lumia 920: October 18th says German Retailer, possibly November 2 for AT&T.

Posted: 08 Sep 2012 12:52 AM PDT

WMPU reports of an October 18th date for the upcoming Nokia Lumia 920′s release. This is based on delivery dates given by a German retailer, not Nokia directly.

http://wmpoweruser.com/german-retailers-taking-pre-orders-for-nokia-lumia-920820-with-18th-october-delivery-date/

This supports the estimate of the previous post expecting mid-October. But as Michael noted, WP8 isn’t expected until late October.

http://mynokiablog.com/2012/09/07/possible-price-and-date-for-nokia-lumia-920-release/

In similar news, November 2 was stated for Nokia’s WP8 by VentureBeat.

http://venturebeat.com/2012/09/07/nokia-lumia-920-820-release-nov-2/

This might not mean anything but James Whatley from 1000Heads/Nokia Connects seemed to be happy that the WP8 Nokia phones might appear in time for his November upgrade.

I know one thing. I’m upgrading this month. I’ve already been waiting since August.

Cheers viipottaja for the tip!

MNB RG: Close-ups from the new Nokia Flagship Helsinki

Posted: 08 Sep 2012 12:42 AM PDT

Janne was recently at the Nokia flagship store in Helsinki, Finland and in this MNB RG shares a close up of the inside of the store.
So, Nokia re-opened their Helsinki, Finland Flagship Store this Friday. It had been under renovation for a couple of months. There was a stage outside, some rappers rapping and despite the rainy weather a good crowd inside and outside. Clearly people were interested.
During the summer there was a persistent rumor – especially in “certain circles” – that Nokia was renovating the store to dump out Symbian and split the store between Lumia and a little bit of Asha, so I curiously went to check it out today. There was no split that I could see, just a very stylish and very white interior displaying all of Nokia. Rumors aside, as far as I could tell, there was no split between any product lines and all or most Nokia’s current products were on display. I think the main change aside from the more modern looks was a more living-room kind of design, where there were activities for (especially younger) people to spend a little time there.
One of the few large tables was dedicated to, surprise surprise, the Nokia 808 PureView Symbian Belle device. There were various units to try out in different colors and each was accompanied by a spherical display of miniature figures. The idea was that people could try out the 808 PureView by taking close-ups of the miniature displays. In one of the displays was a dismantled 808 PureView, surrounded by miniature figures. This table took a lot of space from the not-so-large store and it was one of the more elaborate displays, so 808 PureView was surprisingly prominent.
There was another, a little smaller table that showed Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 dummies in red and yellow both, as well as the new wireless charger and the Fat Boy accessory. The new Lumias are indeed quite glossy and the Lumia 920 seems quite phabletty to my eye, in a good way – it also has a prominent horizontal curve on the backside (unlike the more pillowy 800/900). The outsides of the Fat Boy accessory seemed good quality, just like a real Fat Boy – inside there was soft stuff on the bottom and velcro in one end of the pillow and behind that the normal wireless charger that can be pulled out. There was a Nokia logo on top of the Fat Boy signifying the area where to place to phone for charging.
 Cheers Janne!

Engadget Interviews Kevin Shields; Hints at Upcoming Oversampling + OIS

Posted: 08 Sep 2012 12:29 AM PDT

Nokia's Kevin Shields talks PureView, floating sensors and the 'missile' that is the Lumia 920

Without mincing words anyone who keeps wondering why they labeled the 920 PureView and demands that name be removed should definitely read the full interview, Once again kevin explains how PureView is a BRAND name and not the name for a single piece of technology.

PureView really is about our investment in radical camera technologies. The 808 was one of them, the first one, and what we’ve done with the 920 is a different, radical approach. My message would be: ‘Wait, wait, wait, wait. Let go a little bit. We’ve established a brand that is about the fact that Nokia is a company capable of delivering incredible camera innovation, so we wanted a brand to let you know as the consumer that this is the best that we’ve got.’

On the topic of combining the floating lens/OIS with oversampling:

Stay tuned. Getting a sensor the size of the one in the 808 suspended using this approach is going to take some really clever engineering. But, it’s a good thing we have some really clever engineers.

That’s sounds about the same stuff we heard regarding bringing PureView to WP, and it’s here now, hopefully we’ll see these two PureView phases conjoined in time for a MWC launch?

Check out the rest of the interview here: http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/07/nokia-kevin-shields-on-pureview/
