Secret behind Nokia’s fatboy wireless charger for Nokia Lumia 920… is a Pikachu?

Posted: 17 Sep 2012 04:00 PM PDT

Perhaps it’s a sign that I should go to sleep already, but I was just pondering about the luscious electric pikachu yellow Nokia Lumia 920 and thought about that soft, squidgy wireless charging pillow (an alternative to the charging plate/stand) reminded me of a Pikachu too. It’s sort of like a big old fluffy mouse. An electric charging mouse. Like Pikachu.

I would actually love for someone to make a charger in the shape of a sleeping Pikachu.

Here’s another picture of the fatboy from engadget. Note, it does not actually have a Pikachu face.

You could alternatively opt for that other charging mouse. Well plate. It reminds me even more of a mouse.

This one is a neat accessory. I’m really interested in getting this or that new JBL Play up.

This isn’t a repeat of the charging plate, this one is a charging stand. Nice to leave on a desk or bedside table. Could make use of those additional clock apps (we probably won’t get a constant on screen on LCD). My HP Touchpad when on the touchstone automatically turns on a screensaver clock.

A nice host of Nokia wireless charging surfaces. Hopefully we’ll see more third party ones as well as a spread of charging plates in public places, like Virgin Atlantic lounges and Coffee Bean.

The cutest sound ever. Kawaii!

Confirmed: Amazon is using Nokia’s Location Platform, shuns the Google.

Remember the news that Nokia and Amazon were teaming up for maps?

http://mynokiablog.com/2012/08/31/nokia-teams-up-with-amazon-to-bring-maps-to-kindle-snubs-google-maps/

I was in lectures at the time when I received a tip that questioned whether or not Nokia’s location services were really the back bone of Amazon’s mapping services.

Since then, it has been confirmed by Nokia to TheNextWeb (via Engadget) that they are Amazon’s map provider.

Nokia for 4 out of 5 sat navs. Nokia for Yahoo! Maps. Nokia for Bing maps (and thus Facebook). Nokia for Windows Phone. Nokia for Amazon.

Amazon is licensing the Nokia Location Platform (NLP) for maps and geocoding.

The Nokia Location Platform is the most advanced mobile location platform with a unique global footprint. It provides maps for almost 200 countries (with more than 100 of them navigable) and provides the best, automotive-grade map quality based on industry-leading technology and more than 20 years expertise in mapping.

Amongst others, it is already powering Yahoo Maps, and increasingly also powering Bing Maps as well.

Location is playing a central role in our strategy, and because of its global footprint, quality and completeness of performance (geocoding, routing, traffic) the Nokia Location Platform offers great opportunities for 3rd parties to build upon.

Amazon´s decision to choose the Nokia Location Platform is further proof point that our competence in this space is a key differentiator also for other leading players in the industry to offer great location consumer experiences.

- Dr. Sebastian Kurme, spokesperson for Nokia's Communications, Location & Commerce business units.

http://www.engadget.com/2012/09/17/nokia-cops-to-powering-amazons-mapping-service/

The next web says it’s becoming a 3 horse race for location between Apple, Nokia and Google. Becoming? Well it’s nice at least that Nokia is being recognised as such.

Is Nokia at it again? A small hint towards a Cyan 920?

Posted: 17 Sep 2012 01:13 PM PDT

You have to be amazed at some eagle eyed people out there, having an eye for some of the most amazing details in otherwise bland pictures or videos. Today there was another one of those hidden gems.

This is one some of you have been yearning for ever since the announcements of the 920 back on September the 5th: a Cyan colored Lumia 920. Originally rumoured by Tom Warren and now it got a little more substantiated with this:

The above image is taken from a video about a Red Bull app coming to the Lumia line on the official Nokia channel. It is pretty hard to pause at the right time but it is there around the 38 second mark. It could very well be an error in the video, but Nokia has been known to ‘accidentally’ show new colors or accesories in images or videos before.

On the other hand why wouldn't a Cyan Lumia 920 come, after all we have seen the color in a multitude of first generation Lumia's, the N9 and it is even a prominent color in the upcoming Surface (as little as it has to do with Nokia). We'll just have to wait and see what happens.

Lumia 920 Yellow Unboxing (Parts)

Posted: 17 Sep 2012 12:21 PM PDT

You may have seen Jay’s post earlier this week about the special package he received from Nokia Connects; as it turns out I got one myself, this time in the electric yellow (I’m thinking it’s a Zapdos Yellow-*Hint: Pokemon reference), but the best way to describe would definitely be as Dean put it “Violent Yellow”. Personally I had at all costs avoided ruining the surprise for myself so I hadn’t even seen Jay’s video or anyone else’s; unfortunately the surprise was spoiled on instagram of all places (the one place where I let my guard down).

I had filmed an unboxing video but as it turns out Jordanian Customs absolutely LOVE playing with other people’s shipments, which would explain the large greasy fingerprints all over the Camera module, lens and body; as well as the fact that the cards were mismatched and the Gorilla glass was in the wrong place (which had me believe the Magnifying Carl Ziess lens was a gorilla glass sample).

I honestly loved the Flashcards idea, I think it’s brilliant; a clever way to get all that nerdy information out (nothing wrong with indulging us geeks); I was expecting some mention of the PureMotion HD+ but I assume that would require having the screen in the package as well (I don’t mind! Hell send a second package and I’ll build it myself!).

Canadian Hockey reference made me chuckle; influenced by Elop’s roots?

The box when layed out looks like something that might exchange hands during a shady multi-million dollar deal, it surely is beautiful enough (and innovative) to warrant that pricetag.

There hasn’t been any mention of what type of Gorilla glass is on the Lumia 920, I assume it’s the newer “Gorilla Glass 2″ which allows for thinner sheets of glass with the same strength; unfortunately no amount of Gorilla glass can make up for the laws of physics which dictate that a curved screen is MUCH more likely to shatter if it falls than a flat one (Flat screens have a larger contact area = shock is spread over a larger area rather than a single point of impact).

IF I had any doubt about the color I was getting before that’s all gone now, it’s definitely going to be this electric yellow. The color is extremely difficult to reproduce in images (even with the pureview), the closest color to describe it to would be a florescent (but not annoyingly flashy) yellow.

Edit: My only complaint with the phone being glossy is the same one I have with my stormtrooper, the glossy surface doesn’t affect my grip on the phone at all; but it does show all your grease and fingerprint marks, making it very unsightly.. PLEASE Nokia, dip them in a vat of Oleophobic good stuff before shipping.

The camera module itself is quite impressive, you can clearly see that this is one of the main factors dictating the thickness of the phone, it’s almost as thick as the Lumia 900 on its own! Size wise it does look alot like the N8′s module that we saw during the 808′s presentation.

That’s about it, HUGE shoutout to the guys from Nokia Connects for sharing the excitement with us, I can’t wait to get my hands on the real thing!

Yahoo! employees who get the innovative Nokia Lumia 920 will also get a free wireless charging plate from Nokia.

Posted: 17 Sep 2012 07:37 AM PDT

Remember the post this morning where we learnt that the Nokia Lumia 920 would be one of the handsets offered to Yahoo! employees as part of their ‘get a smartphone’ scheme (not actually the name).

http://mynokiablog.com/2012/09/17/marissa-mayer-yahoo-ceo-ditching-blackberries-offers-employees-the-more-innovative-nokia-lumia-920/

Well for those choosing the more innovative Nokia Lumia 920, Doug Dawson emailed and tweets that Nokia will throw in a free wireless charging plate too. Like my HP Touchpad, that touchstone was an optional accessory but really something very useful (and should be part of every owners pack).  You can always charge up by the universal standard that is the microUSB, but the charging plate is an added mega convenience (which is making its way to coffee shops, airports and further).

Cheers Doug Dawson for the tip!

NokConv: Nokia Lumia 820 comes out of its shell

Posted: 17 Sep 2012 05:07 AM PDT

Nokia Conversations have posted up a nice article on the innovation in the Lumia 820′s interchangeable shell. Besides the fact these shells are interchangeable, whilst still having a premium feel, they can be swapped to enhance the device. Take a look at the Charging Shell. Swap the original shell, for one with wireless charging compatibility, and now you have an added feature; wireless charging.

The post also details a “ruggedised” shell. I never knew about these before the post. This is something awesome, as a lot of the time, getting cases for your device to make them stronger, often makes them extremely thick and ugly. These still have the vibrant colours many fans like.

The shells are set to be available upon the Lumia 820′s launch.

Molome confirmed for WP; Symbian & MeeGo will continue to get support

Posted: 17 Sep 2012 04:14 AM PDT

Today MOLOME was announced to be coming to ALL major platforms, in the form of “MOLOME V3 codename “Phoenix” “. They released a pretty interesting video, to accompany the whole “Phoneix” theme. It makes sense, as Symbian, the original platform of MOLOME, and also MeeGo, are now “burnt”, which would link to the ashes part of the whole Phoneix metaphor.

MOLOME will be on WP, as well as iOS, Android and BB10. The first version will come out some time in September.

For Symbian & MeeGo, they may not get V3, but still have support for V2.

Here is the release from their blog.

Although it is just one year and a half passed but MOLO feel that it is such a very long happy time being with you all. MOLO think it is now a perfect time to renovate. And here is what is coming soon, the all new MOLOME v3 codename "Phoenix" !!

MOLOME v3 comes with all new things: new UI, new backend and even new thing to share. Whole systems are redesigned and re-implemented from scratch to handle the mass transaction and to handle the new kind of media. Many of new cool features will also be available on the new MOLOME. That's why MOLOME v3 's codename is "Phoenix" because it was reborn from the ashes ! MOLO ^0^

MOLOME v3 will be available in every single major smartphone platform including iOS, Android, Windows Phone and BB10 shortly. The first available platform version will be launched by this month (September) while the rest are expected to be launched in this Q4. MOLO ^0^

For Symbian, MeeGo and BlackBerry OS, although Nokia and RIM have already made an announcement that they will not support those OS-es anymore but MOLO will still keep improve the MOLOME v2 on these OS-es. However MOLO could not promise whether the new version will be available on Symbian, MeeGo and BlackBerry OS or not but MOLO will try my best. MOLO ! ^0^

What's new in MOLOME v3? MOLO will keep you up to date on this blog. Please stay tuned. MOLOOOOOO ^0^

NokConv: Nokia’s Sustainability excellence recognised

Posted: 17 Sep 2012 02:44 AM PDT

Sustainability, sadly, it’s not top priority for most consumers. But it is for Nokia and for pretty much forever have been taking sustainability pretty seriously.

Sustainability creates and maintains the conditions under which humans and nature can exist in productive harmony, that permit fulfilling the social, economic and other requirements of present and future generations.

Sustainability is important to making sure that we have and will continue to have,  the water, materials, and resources to protect human health and our environment.

http://www.epa.gov/sustainability/basicinfo.htm

According to the  Carbon Disclosure Project, Nokia is one of the world's top 10 companies when it comes to climate change disclosure and performance. Nokia was one of the companies praised for “improving their climate accountability, achieving higher average disclosure scores year-on-year”.

Nokia also improved their rating on the Dow Jones Sustainability Index ranking, coming joint second in 21 communications and technology companies on the list.

Nokia has improved its score from last year and is now in joint-second place, of the 21 communications and technology companies on the list.

Of all the communications technology companies only 21 have been selected to this list, and Nokia,  is in shared second place together with Cisco Systems and Motorola Solutions behind the sector leader, Alcatel-Lucent.

Nokia has been included in the Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes since the year after its launch, for 13 consecutive years. The 2012/2013 indexes comprises 340 global companies.
