SneakPeak of New Notifications on WP8 Lock Screen (Twitter & FB Notifications)

Posted: 15 Sep 2012 11:01 AM PDT

new notifications in WP8

Since both Nokia and Microsoft have been extremely uncooperative when it comes to talking about the upcoming features of WP8, fans and readers are scanning every frame of the Nokia New York presentation for little clues, and it seems to have payed off. As you can see above there are new Twitter notifications on the homescreen, as well as what looks a lot like the Facebook’s trademark “f”. Previously when the SDK was leaked we discovered that the homescreen has the ability to support up to 5 different application notifications on the lock screen. Below we have a second set of notification icons, this time they seem to be Skype, outlook, AP news, Yahoo? and a Windows Icon (perhaps App updates?).

Personally the only feature I really want to see on the new Lumias is an always on Amoled Screen and Double Tap to Wake.

Screenshots of Ringtone Maker for WP7.8 Lumias

The above screenshots are what appears to be the promised “Ringtone maker” coming to all Nokia WP 7.8 Devices (alongside bluetooth sharing and some other cool features). As you can see there seems to be an option to crop out and select your preferred part of your desired ringtone, which would probably mean that the RingTone maker is connected to your music library. For now there are some alternative apps on the WP store such as: This and this; but there is yet to be an app that can create a ringtone from your own MP3 files on the device.

Windows Phone 8 Released to Manufacturing.

Posted: 15 Sep 2012 10:03 AM PDT

The Released to Manufacturing status (RTM) of any operating system is the second most important and definitive timepoint in getting devices to market. It would seem that just last night Windows Phone 8 achieved just that status. What this means is that Microsoft halted addition of new features to the OS a number of months ago and have spent the last few months improving performance and polishing the user experience. OEM’s on the other hand now have the final version of the OS to stuff on their devices, only needing to do minor modifications to and add unique experiences to their builds of the software before shipping to carriers and end users.

Given this latest development, it would seem that a release date of November 2nd may either be right on the money or just a little early. Windows Phone Mango RTM-ed on July 26th 2011  and officially launched/rolled out to customers on September 27th of the same year. This was exactly a two month window for device maker modifications, carrier testing and other preparations before we got our grubby mitts on it.

That said, there are rumours of carriers around the world already putting the device through their testing procedures and we may see it up for pre-order by Mid-October or even at the launch of Windows 8  on October 26th.

Weekend LOL: Hitler finds out about iPhone 5 (Wants the Lumia 920)

Posted: 15 Sep 2012 03:20 AM PDT

It’s a slowly growing trend that folks seem to be waking up from the slight spell of the wondrous iThing. It’s a great device, don’t get me wrong. But when you have a product like the Nokia Lumia 920 that offers something new to the table, well you just have to ask yourself what on earth is Apple doing with their hundreds of billions.

This video takes the long (and what we thought was long dead) meme of ‘Hitler finds out’, a clip from a 2004 film,  Der Untergang, where the subtitles reflect a currently popular topic. This one shows the disappointment in the new iPhone. There’s been a lot of news about how the iPhone 5 could boost the US’ GDP single handedly so there might be some interest to keep making the stale milking factory as popular as ever.

Below, Hitler is infuriated about the new iPhone not having anything new. He’s angry at Nokia, some random company (perhaps not aware of their history), coming in and walking all over them (well, on paper at least. We know that’s not how sales work. Especially against reality distortion fields). Samsung’s return hit at Apple is also mentioned (they warned they would sue Apple the moment they put a LTE device on the market – what about the US iPad 3?) Lumia copycat iPods also get a mention. Hitler worries what will happen should Nokia get a tablet to market.

BTW: Warning – some swearing involved in the subtitles.

Cheers to Muerte for the tip!

Cyan Nokia Lumia 920 on the way?

Either Tom Warren is mistaken about available colours or he’s hinting at knowing about a Cyan Nokia Lumia 920 on the way.

Now, it wouldn’t be too much of a stretch for Nokia to bring a cyan 920 as something to refresh the 920 line up. Perhaps at launch or a few months after that. Looking at the accessories line up, there are still cyan devices, so there might be a partner lumia 920 in cyan to come indeed :) .

Cheers M for the tip.

Weekend Watch: Discover the new Nokia Lumia

Posted: 15 Sep 2012 02:06 AM PDT

The WindowsPhone youtube channel takes a look at the Nokia Lumia 920.

I’m starting to grow a real obsession with this phone. I’m loving that 800/N9 curved screen. It is gorgeous and one of the reasons I love my 800 so much.

I can’t wait to play around with the super sensitive screen, see PureMotion HD+, give PureView v2 a go and charge wirelessly like my touchpad. There’s also the whole bunch of WP8 consumer features we’re still yet to see.
