Weekend Watch: Nokia Lumia 920 hands on and cinemagraph demo.

Posted: 21 Sep 2012 06:23 PM PDT

Here’s a hands on of the Nokia Lumia 920 which I found informative on a few new things to me.

I’ll mention the all the features mentioned:

  • Super sensitive touch, not only your finger tips
  • PureMotion HD+
  • Clear Black
  • Sunlight Readability enhancement
  • High Brightness mode (600 nits outdoors) – Best readability outdoors

Lenses part of the camera UI opened fast, like a natural part of the UI. I dislike camera extras because of the slight lag. This opens up much faster.

Also cinemagraph looks very easy to use but versatile enough to specify what frame segment you want and what areas you wish to move in your ‘picture..

Verizon to pick up Nokia Lumia 920 according to leaked roadmap?

Posted: 21 Sep 2012 06:02 PM PDT

PhoneArena reports that according to a leaked Verizon roadmap, Verizon might be getting the Nokia Lumia 920. Along with the Ativ S and 8X, November is the suggested date.

Although Verizon has said they’ll be supporting WP and will do what they did with Droid for WP, I’ll refrain from getting too excited until I see Verizon have a Nokia Lumia on their shelves.

Rumor: Lumia 820 & 920 To Be Available Mid/Late October?

Posted: 21 Sep 2012 02:59 PM PDT

We’ve all heard the previous speculations about the release date of the Lumia range, which now falls either sometime towards the end of October (21st is the word of mouth); and between early November. Of course earlier is always better for us eager fans, which is why I’m hoping the following new tidbit has a grain of truth in it. According to one of our readers “Davide” the Nokia Italy expect to have the new Lumia devices available sometime around Mid/Late October (which would fit in perfectly in the Oct. 21st time-frame). The reason behind this speculation is that the Nokia Italy team are taking a training course about the new devices in the upcoming days; since the devices are ready for “training purposes” I assume that there’s not much left to do besides pack them, ship them and market the hell out of them.

Nokia sets trends again, iPhone 5 attempts oversampling like Nokia 808 PureView

Posted: 21 Sep 2012 08:20 AM PDT

SlashGear reports that the iPhone 5 is attempting to do some oversampling of its 8MP photos in order to improve low light performance.

The Nokia 808 PureView showed us how this can work in creating the super pixel, condensing 41MP to either 8, 5 or 3MP. The lower the output, the more oversampling.

http://www.slashgear.com/your-8mp-iphone-5-may-only-give-you-4mp-photos-but-its-not-broken-21248848/

The interesting bit is that the switch apparently occurs automatically. I had hoped this would have been the case with the 808 prior to announcement.

Do you reckon Apple did this out of the blue or is this Nokia setting trends again (sadly, people will credit oversampling to iPhone only, and also possibly OIS in iPhone 6).

Nokia Facebook: “See something Amazing this weekend”

Posted: 21 Sep 2012 07:19 AM PDT

Nokia may be hinting at something or possibly just telling you guys to enjoy your weekend and see something interesting.

Their facebook page has a picture looking underneath the Eifel Tower, with the message, ‘See something amazing this weekend’.

Forbes: Nokia Maps Drives Circles Around Apple and Google

Posted: 21 Sep 2012 07:10 AM PDT

When Apple introduced to the world their own mapping solution, it might have got people at Nokia and Google a little worried. And so they should be, as you should never underestimate the competition.

Apple’s maps featured the 3D technology behind Nokia Maps 3D. It certainly seemed as if Apple was on a good start. But after users have had a chance to use Apple’s maps, the overwhelming response is disappointment. Apple’s maps is becoming a joke on the internet. They’ve sported many angry tweets from users, as well as inspiring tumbler pages such as this:

http://theamazingios6maps.tumblr.com/

Apple’s move away from Google signified the importance of location based services for the future of smartphones (and also that Apple, and now also Amazon are trying to ditch google ASAP). Also quite interestingly, it showed ignorance towards Nokia’s amazing offerings (as many were only aware of Google). Nokia is consolidating their image into one recognizable Nokia Location services (as opposed to a more faceless NAVTEQ).

Long winded introductions aside, Forbes have an article from contributer, Bob Egan about Nokia Drive with Nokia’s maps driving circles around Apple and Google’s offerings.

http://www.forbes.com/sites/bobegan/2012/09/20/nokia-maps-drives-circles-around-apple-and-google/

Now Nokia is standing on rooftops, calling out to anyone who will listen, that they are the best in location and mapping on phones. Not a rushed afterthought (I'm looking at you Apple). And certainly not a loss leader for an advertising scheme (I'm looking at you Google). And frankly while Google does "ok" most of the time, Nokia deserves its bragging rights because it makes you feel local, wherever you are…

…Whether you are a consumer who wants to occasionally to use your phone to accurately map your drive, or a road warrior with little sense of direction (like me) Nokia is the top of the line and will keep you on time and at ease.

Nokia Drive is an excellent application. Easy to use, very quick to find you, very reliable in directing you where to go. I’ve had so many personal experiences where Nokia Drive has come to save the day, either just me or a group of friends/colleagues who have got lost or got let down by supposedly a dedicated sat nav or no signal.

Hopefully Nokia will continue striving for improvement. Apple’s inadequate maps may be giving Nokia some breathing space but it’s no time to rest. Nokia Drive still needs to improve POI search.

Also worth noting is a post from earlier today comparing precisely Nokia and the competition’s offerings.

New: Nokia Lumia 510 heading to China, sports 4″ screen.

Posted: 21 Sep 2012 05:59 AM PDT

Above is a very Lumia 710 looking device but it’s 2 series lower. This is the Nokia Lumia 510, oddly sporting an older WP logo.

http://tieba.baidu.com/p/1875168126

The translated specifications say this has a 4″ screen. Larger than what is found in the 800/710/610. It will have the unfortunate 800MHz MSM7227A + 256MB RAM combo. I say unfortunate as the WP fluid experience is somewhat hampered (at least in 610, things don’t open up as fast and there’s some apps that won’t run). The cheaper 610 has been going ok in China though.

Translation says WP7.5 or even WP7.8.

Cheers Aikon171 for the tip!

Quick Comparison: Nokia Lumia 920 trumps Samsung’s SGSIII in low light without flash and more sensitive screen

Posted: 21 Sep 2012 05:49 AM PDT

I didn’t realise there were other videos by Eugen when comparing the 920 aginst the SGSIII. Cheers nabin and Eugen for the heads up.

This is just a quick comparison and not a thorough definitive test.

In the first video, we see what appears to be a very dark scene (could have been made worse by the camera recording it not being very good in low light).

I’m stunned by the SGSIII as it actually managed to pull out a picture.

Here’s a Nokia.

This is a test just demonstrating how much more light a 920 picks up on its own without flash. Obviously if it was this dark, you would turn flash on.

However, there are situations where flash is neither allowed, appropriate or sufficient for the job. Flash may light up objects within 3 metres, but beyond that, they will not be lit. What if you wanted to have a nice backdrop in the night? Sometimes the flash is too harsh. DSLR’s can sort of get around this with controlled flash levels, directional flash, remote flash and diffusers. You’re very limited with an onboard compact flash in terms of the direct in your face look. Situations where flash might not be allowed – you may not want to cause distraction or it might be prohibited.

You won’t have an option to use a faster lens, but you can turn up the ISO. This does come at a cost of more noise, but it does mean you reduce the blur from a longer shutter speed. However, if you can reduce the blur with OIS, you may be able to shoot at a lower ISO but obtain more light. I’m interested to see what pictures in highest ISO with OIS activated in the 920.

The next video is a screen test. You should be able to use any tool on the 920′s super sensitive screen.

Here you can see both cloth and pen in action. A regular pen would be great for drawing (versus those crappy bouncy styluses for capacitive displays).

Nokia Lumia 920 PureView VS Samsung Galaxy S3 Live, side by side comparison video

Posted: 21 Sep 2012 01:20 AM PDT

Until we get some reviews and hands on units, it’ll be hard to truly know how the Nokia Lumia 920 with PureView performs.

But we can get a gist of what it might be like and we’re slowly getting more demoes released, but mainly from Nokia people with rehearsed moves.

In this video we can see not only the Nokia Lumia 920 but also the SGSIII. Both are strapped to a remote controlled car (so shake is both equal) you can see the car drive around and after both record, we see the playback.

Unfortunately the person doing the test got a little confused as to how to play the videos back on both devices at the same time and at the same point.

Whilst there might be shakes, being on a level toy car already minimised that. But at acceleration, you can see that the SGSIII is shaking heavily up and down, whilst that is not the case on the 920. I’d like to see a like ‘walk’ holding both devices simultaneously but walking.
