Nokia Lumia 920 Pureview Tech and Carl Zeiss Partnership Detailed (Video)

Posted: 24 Sep 2012 12:14 PM PDT

Nokia Lumia 920 is supposed to have a PureView camera on board and that puzzled many people, that expected the Nokia 808 PureView sensor, but that’s not totally accurate. Now there’s an official video online, detailing the partnership between Nokia and Carl Zeiss and also the feats of the latest Lumia phone.

Ari Partinen from Nokia and Oliver Shindleback from Carl Zeiss provide details about the relationship of Carl Zeiss with Nokia and the idea of PureView. PureView is actually a standard for digital imaging, so when a device gets this branding it offers a special ability of capture, both video and audio. This is just like the Nseries, that was a definition for great multimedia abilities, while the Pureview stands for great camera features. As the picture above shows, the new Lumia sensor draws inspiration both from the Pureview 808 and from the older N90 sensor, but in a more evolved version.

Nokia Lumia 920 features a Carl Zeiss lens camera, an optical stabilizer, 26 mm focal length, F2.0 aperture, real 16:9 sensor, BSI and 8.7 megapixels in resolution. Nokia and Carl Zeiss have been working together since 2005 and those have been a fruitful bunch of years, with the latest Pureview products being a testimony to that.

Posted: 24 Sep 2012 10:02 AM PDT

Apple’s new iPhone 5 is the hottest device all-around and already they reported selling over 5 million of them. Some users around the Globe are enjoying their new iPhones while others, though purchasing the same device, not so much. After the anodized casing issues with the black variant of the iPhone 5, another problem seems to ruin the experience for the new iPhone owners.

With such large amounts of the new device being sold around the world is hard not to come by some defective units, as it has happened with previous gen i-devices. The latest complain from some users seems to be regarding light leakage issues around the device’s case. According to MacRumors forum member "Leotno," some white iPhone 5 models are showing slight light leakage between device's glass display and chamfered aluminum antenna.

BGR has also confirmed experiencing the same problems with one of their test units of the white iPhone 5. The sorce of the problem seems to be a small crack on some new iPhone 5 units located just below the home button. At the moment we cannot tell for sure how many units are affected by this issue. The unit that BGR reported defective is an 64GB iPhone 5 – white and silver model running on AT&T. Further reports are expected if this is indeed a major issue affecting a large number of devices.

RIM is Preparing R-series and L-series Smartphones for the Next Year (Rumor)

Posted: 24 Sep 2012 05:02 AM PDT

RIM is one of the manufacturers that is trying to keep up with the current market demands. They faced many financial difficulties, especially in the last period, as the sales fell 41 percent in its latest quarter from a year earlier, according to a Bloomberg survey of 35 analysts. RIM is trying to get its first two BB10 models into stores early next year to stop customers from abandoning it for Apple - iPhone and devices built on Google Android OS.

RIM's upcoming Blackberry L-series is expected to stand out as their new flagship devices, according to recent rumors. It’s not the first time we’ve heard about the L-series. We’ve recently covered a teardown of a BlackBerry 10 L Series unit. About the R-series, word has it that RIM has an it planned for what will basically be equivalent to the "Curve" series for Blackberry 10. The R-series will offer mid-ranged devices and is expected to be introduced to the market in May of 2013.

While we’ve seen some of the specs of the upcoming L-series, courtesy of the teardown, for the R-series there is currently no info regarding it’s hardware or pricing and availability. We don’t even know if it will be a full touchscreen design or if it will sport a QWERTY keyboard. Devices in the R-series are rumored to be introduced at Blackberry World in Orlando in 2013 which has apparently been scheduled for May 14-16 of next year. Till then we expect further info to surface.

82% of Windows Phone Fans Want a Nokia Lumia 920, Instead of HTC 8X or Samsung Ativ S

Posted: 24 Sep 2012 02:41 AM PDT

Although Samsung was the first to announce a Windows Phone 8 device, the public doesn’t favour them or HTC with the freshly announced 8X and 8S models. The public wants a Nokia Lumia 920, as shown by a recent poll on WPCentral, with 10,000 voters and 82% of them preferring the latest Lumia. Reasons for that? Plenty!

People want the PureView camera, PureMotion HD+ display, classic Lumia design, the ability to use the screen with gloves, Clear Black technology, wireless charging and exclusive Nokia apps. Nokia Lumia 920 seems to be handling competition well in the Windows Phone area, but will it be able to take on big names like the Galaxy S III and the iPhone 5? The first has 20 million units sold in 3 months and the second sold 2 million units in 24 hours. According to another poll, one done by Wired, the Lumia 920 was put 22,000 votes above the iPhone 5, with 62%.

Sadly, such online studies never translate into big sales, for some reason. People will end up not liking the bulky nature of the Lumia, or the big price of the device, or maybe the tiles. They’ll go with the skinnier iPhone 5 or the massive Galaxy S III in the end. Nokia Lumia Series has a year of life now and it’s already become popular enough to start leaving a mark on this market. If it doesn’t start earning some millions of sales with the latest units this year, it may be game over for Nokia and Windows Phone…

Samsung Galaxy S III Starts Getting Android 4.1 Jelly Bean Updates (Video)

Posted: 24 Sep 2012 01:58 AM PDT

Good news folks! Samsung Galaxy S III has just started receiving Android 4.1 Jelly Bean updates, that should have actually come at the end of August, when Galaxy Note II was unveiled. There were a lot of rumors regarding the debut of Jelly Bean on the latest Galaxy S model and all of them placed the update at the end of August, but that didn’t come through.

The Jelly Bean update is rolling out now and Poland uses are among the first in the world to get it. The Android 4.1.1 update, shown in the video below brings better performance, courtesy of Project Butter and its 60 FPS speed. It also gets a reorganized settings menu, 2 Homescreen models a new notification bar, that’s now more ample and detailed, plus it replaces S Memo with S Note. There’s also Google Now and a resizable pop up play screen. Samsung will be rolling out Jelly Bean updates in more countries later this month.

You can use either Kies or OTA to update to the latest version of Android, but you have to make sure the battery is at least at 50% and that WiFi is being used. In order to flash (if you want to), you need to download the firmware and rely on Odin. And now we’re waiting for the first impressions on Jelly Bean running on Galaxy S III and also to see how the benchmarks have changed.
