iPhone 5 Jailbreak Happens, Not Ready for General Public Yet

Posted: 22 Sep 2012 01:08 PM PDT

It was a matter of time till the proper hackers got hold of the iPhone 5 and started tinkering with it, jailbreaking the handset and all that. The 4 inch iPhone has just received its jailbreak and it was shown running Cydia in the picture below, posted on Twitter by Grant Paul, as proof of the hack.

This comes just days after the older devices running iOS 6.0 were also hacked. I’m talking about the devices with an Apple A4 CPU that were also jailbroken on iOS 6.0 this week. I expect that in about a week or so we’ll get the jailbreak on our elongated iPhones. I wonder if Apple will pull any stunts when it comes to stopping the unlock and jailbreak of the new iPhone, since they always find a new way to counter hackers on each new device. I also wonder how long it will be till the hackers find the first major exploit on the handset.

Anyway, by now millions of people have the iPhone 5, so that’s reason enough to lose some hacker sleep over perfecting redsn0w or any other hacking method out there. Any of you lucky iPhone 5 owners messing with jailbreaks right now?

Samsung Galaxy S III Tizen OS Version Gets WiFi Certification

Posted: 22 Sep 2012 12:29 PM PDT

Samsung is apparently preparing a Galaxy S III version with Tizen OS on board for some reason. This was shown by a WiFi certification for this model that was recently received by the handset. This is a very curious choice of OS on such a potent device, but we know that Sammy likes to experiment with a lot of platforms, from Windows Phone 8 to Firefox OS and from Windows 8 to Tizen.

Samsung may be testing a Tizen OS phone with the same specs as the Galaxy S III or they may be using the S III for OS tests. Samsung delayed Tizen OS devices till 2013 last I heard, but they’re certainly involved in this initiative. Rumors have also been going around, saying that Sammy may merge Tizen and Bada and create one new, single platform for the low/mid end market. Samsung is expected to introduce its first Tizen devices at MWC 2013, if everything works out fine.

For those of you who don’t know, Tizen is a free and open source mobile OS, based on the Linux operating system and incorporating some elements from the MeeGo project, like the network management. The Tizen Association handles the evolution of the OS and includes the likes of Huawei, Intel, Orange, Panasonic, Samsung, Sprint and Vodafone. The developers rely on HTML5 and WAC technologies for the platform’s future.

Nokia Lumia 920 Versus Samsung Galaxy S III In Image Stabilization Test (Video)

Posted: 22 Sep 2012 10:39 AM PDT

Nokia Lumia 920 and its official announcement brought trouble early this month, when the device’s promo video for the OIS (optical image stabilization) was proved to be a fake. Since then Nokia has apologized and provided genuine footage of the handset’s optical potential. Today we see a video test that involves a remote control toy car, with a Lumia 920 strapped to it and a Galaxy S III as well.

Both the Samsung Galaxy S III and the Nokia Lumia 920 had their video capture on and they were attached to the little remote controlled vehicle, that moved around at reasonably high speed. The ride is bumpy and shaky enough to put the stabilizers on both handsets to the test. The result shows us a Lumia 920 with great colours and brightness, but also great stabilization, while the Galaxy S III didn’t handle the test that well. Bumps and jerks are present, as shown in the video below.

The comparison was done by a Russian tester and there’s no Nokia toying with the results this time. Ever since the OIS video incident, Nokia has been open about allowing people to test their handset and its camera abilities, which is a good thing. Now we wait for our turn to test the device…

Scuff Gate! iPhone 5 Has Case Problems, Black Case Show Fast Wear Down Signs

Posted: 22 Sep 2012 02:19 AM PDT

After the HTC One S and its famous anodized case problems, with all the chipping and paint scratching now it’s time for a new Apple-related scandal. After the Antenna Gate of the iPhone 4 and the minor Battery Gate of the iPhone 4S, the iPhone 5 brings us Scuff Gate. The problem was discovered by the guys of Pocket Lint in their review of the handset, that revealed a defect of the black phone version: its paint scratches off easily at the sides and back.

The case shows signs of being worn down fast and it appears the problem was caused by the fact Apple gave up on the glass back and also by the thickness of the glass panel at the front. Those affected the design of the metal band on the sides of the iPhone. Although that band looked nice at first, during prolonged use of the handset it will get damaged and lose some paint coating. The iPhone 5 black version suffers from this and you can see the shiny metal through the black layer of coating in the chipped areas.

Separate iPhone 5 black models have gone through this problem and Apple has yet to reply to the issue, probably still dealing with the bad press surrounding iOS 6.0 Maps. I bet that they’re going to solve this issue yet again with some cases… We’ve also included a chipped HTC One S picture, for comparison sake.

Samsung Galaxy S III Pink Version Coming Next Week to Korea

Posted: 22 Sep 2012 02:09 AM PDT

Samsung has moved on past the initial marble white and pebble blue color versions for the Galaxy S III and now it’s unveiling the device in various flavours, from garnet red to this new pink model shown below. Starting next week customers in Korea will be able to buy a pink Samsung Galaxy S III.

A regional roll out is also expected in the near future and in case you’re wondering other hues include amber brown, sapphire black and titanium grey, as well as those mentioned above. The specs stay the same and include a quad core Exynos processor, 1 or 2 GB of RAM (depending on the region you get the handset from), a 4.8 inch display, 8 megapixel camera and those kickass features that Samsung brags about so much. I’m talking about the S Beam, Smart Stay, Pop Up Play, S Voice, palm screenshot and more.

You should probably also know that the Samsung Galaxy S III is said to have sold about 20 million units in just a couple of months, so it’s probably the phone of the year right now…
