WP7.8 update for current Lumias coming shortly?

Posted: 03 Sep 2012 01:42 PM PDT

Not much to go on. Mr Trevaskus might be hinting at this, or he might not.

2 hours ago, Dave tweeted:

Don’t forget, in all the excitement of this week, we’re updating and improving the existing #Lumia devices all the time.

Followed by:

All will be revealed, my people, all will be revealed!! #Lumia

We could take this as an indication that perhaps the WP7.8 update (which brings some improvements including the new WP8 homescreen) will be launched this week for current Lumias. It was expected to appear after WP8 devices were launched. Hopefully we won’t have to wait too long.

Rumored Specs of Lumia 820, Includes Wireless Charging, Micro SD & Removable Cover

Posted: 03 Sep 2012 09:18 AM PDT

With the recent spurge of leaks regarding the upcoming Nokia Lumia 820 & 920, very little has been left to the imagination; but regarding the internals of these devices the Verge have a bit more to add. The specs of the Lumia 820 are supposedly very similar to that of 920′s rumored specs, even claiming to pack the same camera as it’s big brother.

It would appear as though the only real difference between the 820 and the 920 would be in the screen resolution and the internal storage; if true this would certainly sweeten the deal on this mid range device. And it’s always nice to see that Nokia aren’t skimping on the internals just to keep the price down, hopefully now that we’ve entered the fragmentation zone they’ll understand the importance of competitive specs at competitive prices.

More Leaks! Lumia 820 & 920 Side By Side

Posted: 03 Sep 2012 08:09 AM PDT

Whoever @evaleaks is he seems to pose a serious problem for Nokia, as in the last two minutes he’s shown off Nokia’s new Wireless charging pad for upcoming devices, as well as both upcoming device is a glamorous side by side press shot. The yellow one (920?) seems to carry a more profound resemblance to the Lumia 800, with seemingly curved glass, while the red (820?) looks to be slightly larger, but an overall solid device. Pictured in the middle is the Luna headset announced last year (or perhaps an updated version of it?). Either way there doesn’t seem to be too many surprises left for us on the 5th (hoping that I’m wrong though).

Personally I can’t make up which one I prefer more, both look stunning as they rightfully should, hopefully their internals match the beauty of the outer shell.

*Also note both Nokia Logos are on the right of the device, making place for a carrier logo? I’m sure the red 820 would look smashing on the walls of Verizons big red store?

Admittedly though the 820 does look quite similar to the leaked HTC WP; but with a bit softer corners and a wider screen, but before anyone can cry foul neither have been released so calm down.

Nokia Wireless Charging Pad for New Lumia Devices Leaked

Posted: 03 Sep 2012 07:59 AM PDT

We just heard Rumor of Wireless charging coming to the Lumia 920, and now our good friend @evleaks already has an image up for us. From the image above it would seem that both the 820 and the 920 support induction charging on that colorful platform, which honestly reminds me of the wireless mouse sensors for early Mice. Hopefully Nokia will also sell a larger size of the pad for charging multiple devices simultaneously.

(assuming that the second image is the Arrow/820 I have to say it looks gorgeous in this render)

Lumia 920 to Come with Wireless Charging and 8mp PureView Camera, New Method of PureView??

Posted: 03 Sep 2012 06:28 AM PDT

Lumia920design

Ok so according tot eh Verge’s Tom Warren who has been teasing us all week about the Lumia 920 and it’s alleged PureView the supposed specs are:

  • Wireless Charging through hidden strip in the back of the phone
  • 32GB storage
  • 1Gb ram
  • 1.5Ghz Dual Core
  • 4.5″ HD Disaplay
  • 8Mp “PureView” Camera
  • 1.3 MP FFC

Nokia is focusing on marketing the Lumia 920 as PureView thanks to some advancements in image stabilization and camera software that it plans to ship on the device. The front of the device will also include a 1.3-megapixel camera.

We’re expecting Nokia to announce the device on Wednesday for AT&T customers initially, with a launch date expected in late October or early November.

Is this some sort of joke? we all know that pureview basically relies on oversampling and merging or discarding some of it’s extra pixels, what kind of Pureview is 8MP??? Are we expected to capture images in .5Mp to get the Pureview out of it? Personally I’m gonna go with FAKE, as some of these specs seem ludicrous, especially the screen size which I’ve been told is much larger. However only time will tell. (Also i’m desperately praying that these specs are fake)

*If true Nokia are playing a VERY dangerous game watering down the meaning of PureView, unfortunately we’ve already seen that happen with the Carl Ziess name which used to be a major selling point, but is now just meaningless.

As someone mentioned in the Verge’s comments:

Edit: On the other hand, people have mentioned Damien Tweeting about “Other Techniques” to achieve PureView quality pictures, because obviously it’s not feasible to put a giant sensor in each phone. Perhaps there’s a way around the ridiculous sensor needed for oversampling? perhaps there’s a way around the need for oversampling in the first place. For example doesn’t Scalado’s tech of taking a lot of photos quickly then selecting the best and merging them together qualify as creating the perfect pixel but on a larger scale? Especially considering Nokias recent acquisition of Scaladao? Or have Nokia gone with the more Generic branding for technology as is Apples way? For Apple anything that’s high resolution is dubbed “retina” and people like that, it makes it easier for them to understand, personally if this supposed 8mp PureView can take proper photos, then I don’t care if it’s using Black magic to get these images, I’ll take two.

And as Muerte pointed out in his comment down below:

Maybe they have finally been able to put a graphine sensor to this baby, and the superspeedy sensor can handle 5 photos in the same time as it takes for regular one to take a single photo.

8×5=40 => same amount of pixels as in 808 => PureView algorithms make perfect pixels.

After the release of the 808 Nokia Patented the use of Graphine sensors in its cameras:

In fact, Nokia has been given a patent for a camera sensor that uses one or several graphene photo-sensitive layers instead of the widely used CMOS technology. For those not familiar, graphene structures are extremely tiny as the material is basically a single layer of carbon atoms bound together. Several layers can be stacked on top of each other with each of them dedicated to absorbing one of the primary colors.

Nokia patents graphene camera sensor
Besides, it turns out that graphene has the property to capture photons effectively and evenly across a broad spectrum of frequencies, including that of visible light. Therefore, these new sensors should excel at capturing images in low-light conditions.

Video: Student Pizza time with Nokia 808 PureView (making Pizza from scratch)

Posted: 03 Sep 2012 04:27 AM PDT

On Friday, I received a trial Nokia 808 PureView. Whilst I was making lunch, I thought I’d use the 808 to record what I was doing. Making pizza from scratch. Well, from the flour base and the ingredients vs getting the prepared one from the store. This was just a quick test – perhaps I should have talked through it but my back was hurting way too much for that.

The 808 was zoomed in the whole time hence why the vibration is much more pronounced.  I found that the continuous AF did not perform as well as I’d hoped here. Perhaps I was too close at times? I reverted to using tap focus which automatically disables CAF until you press that button again.

I used a faux stabiliser which wasn’t correctly set up and so may have caused more problems than I would have had without it. It’s certainly better when you’re walking around vs slow panning as you’ll see hopefully either this week or next week as I show some useful accessories for the 808. I’ve got a new tripod today which would have been perfect for the short panning clips.

Although not in the video, I was amazed by the sound recording from the 808. I was playing back some clips in the video editor and kept thinking someone’s left something cooking in the oven as the alarm kept going off. It was the 808 video. I’m going to be recording some more of my own tests for PureView this week.

Windows Phone growing in China?

Posted: 03 Sep 2012 03:46 AM PDT

WMPU and WPDang are reporting that there’s possibly a ‘steep growth’ for Windows Phone in China (and thus by extension, Nokia Lumia).

Windows Phones were only officially introduced into the country in March 2012, and one can see the graph tilting up sharply after this.

It is of note that the revelation that Windows Phone 7.5 devices will not be upgraded to Windows Phone 8 in June 2012 has not slackened this growth at all.

http://wmpoweruser.com/chinese-windows-phone-market-analysed-shows-steep-growth/

Apparently Nokia is reaping the rewards and have taken 76% of the install base for WP in China.

The best selling WP is the cheap Lumia 610, followed by the 800 and then 710.

Cheers Janne for the tip!
