Nokia issues apology for OIS confusion; Publishes actual Lumia 920 footage

Posted: 05 Sep 2012 06:30 PM PDT

Quick post from my N9 while I am on the bus. Apologies for any errors.

If you’ve been paying attention in the last few hours, you would most likely be aware of what has been going on around the web, regarding Nokia’s video demonstration of OIS on YouTube.

If not, then here is a quick summary. Nokia posted a video regarding OIS on the Lumia 920, depicting a guy on his bike filming a girl with his 920. The point of view changes to the camera, and we see footage of the OIS on, and off. However, there was a stuff up, as a reflection showed a van filming with a camera that wasn’t the Lumia 920.

A few blogs have posted about the "deceit", despite Nokia saying it was to demonstrate OIS technology, not the Lumia 920.

Anyway, it appears now Nokia has uploaded the video they presented during the keynote, where someone is on a bike, with a very unique apparatus, demonstrating the Lumia 920 vs. a competitor’s product (I think it is SGS3).

Take a look!

Nokia Lumia 920 hits Reddit’s front page, impresses Redditors.

Posted: 05 Sep 2012 04:44 PM PDT

Two major old school brands launched new phones on the 5th of September 2012. Nokia and Motorola. One got people’s attention. The other…well, no one really knows. Causing a buzz and stirring up global/worldwide trending topics on twitter, the Nokia Lumia phones have reached Reddit’s front page.

http://www.reddit.com/r/technology/comments/ze8q1/nokia_announces_phone_with_a_wireless_charging/

This is quite a feat, especially for a phone launch. This hugely popular site around the world, and particularly around the US is often regarded as the front page of the internet. Things that get on reddit tend to go viral. e.g. The indestructible Nokia memes for which they have a soft spot for dear old Nokia.

It’s interesting to see some fresh take on Nokia. Many comments here seem uneducated about what Nokia has achieved in the past and what they did today. Fortunately, some Nokia/WP fans are long time redditors helping to educate on what precisely these Nokia features mean.

I can’t imagine their reaction if they heard about the Nokia 808 PureView’s 41MP camera with rich recording and huge sensor. Granted it’s Symbian but that would have been something exciting on the imaging scene.

Things seemed to be liked in this thread is Windows Phone. People new to it are saying after trying it, they like it. They also like the sound of the floating lens and wireless charging as well as the usual beautiful design from Nokia.

I read a comment that since Nokia has been using WP their phones have gotten ‘better’. Perhaps that’s true but perhaps Nokia’s just become more noticable now.

The Nokia 808 PureView will remain one of the best niche camera phones ever, with superlative quality in picture/video/audio. The Nokia Lumia 920 will go some way into paving a path of bringing Nokia back to mainstream, hopefully preparing them for the time when PureView pro and the floating lens gets combined into the 2013 Lumia.

Skype For WP8 Cameo in Nokia Ad

Posted: 05 Sep 2012 01:43 PM PDT

In the latest series of Nokia adverts showing off the inductive charging, Nokia might have shown off a bit more than Microsoft would have liked. When the phone is set on the charger a screenshot of an active skype call appears on the Lumia 920 as you can see above. From the looks of it the UI shares alot of elements with that of the native dialer, even the inclusion of a switch to bluetooth option. Overall I think it looks pretty great, and would probably look even better on that 720P FFC of the 920.

Videos: Proof the Lumia 920 is “Pretty Amazing” – Nokia Lumia 920 Optical Image stabilisation, super sensitive screen demo and more

Posted: 05 Sep 2012 12:35 PM PDT

Following Anandtech’s sample that prooves that PureView in the 920 gets significantly more low light in very low light situations, Laptopmag has some excellent hands on videos with the Nokia Lumia 920. They seem to be rather impressed with the phone.

http://blog.laptopmag.com/nokia-lumia-920-first-impressions-pureview-camera-raises-the-bar-for-smartphones

In the video, you can see how the super sensitive display works. Feather light capacitive touch yet it can respond to gloves and finger nails!

That’s something that might not sound impressive but will definitely impact positively in day to day use of the touch screen.

Next up you can see the optical image stabilisation in action. Notice how half press (like on my Canon 60D) activates image stabilisation and instantly the picture is smooth. This makes such a difference in getting a clear shot or not.

The Lumia 920 also shines when it comes to steadying your photos and videos. Built-in object image stabilization will prevent blur, and we saw proof when a Nokia rep started shaking the phone. As soon as he pressed the shutter half-way down, the image stopped shaking. Pretty amazing.

Check out the low light test at the end. In low light mode, the competing smartphone captures NO picture. In auto, the 920 gets a clear photo.

Next up, take a look at Cinemagraph in action. We discussed this earlier in this post but this video shows it off better.

http://mynokiablog.com/2012/09/05/nokia-lenses-nokia-smartshoot-and-cinemagraph/

How Cinemagraph works

Purely focusing on image stabilisation. Look what happens the moment he hits record. The shake is virtually totally eliminated. And he’s shaking on purpose. I love hearing the Finnish accent explaining the camera.

Cheers Botham for the tip!

No, Nokia Did NOT Fake The Image Stabilization Video (Updated)

Posted: 05 Sep 2012 12:16 PM PDT

Rumors are going around about the teaser/Reveal video of the Optical Image Stabilization in the Lumia 920, as you can see in the image above the video was indeed filmed inside a moving van. True there was a bit of advertising deceit involved in the video itself, the boy riding on a bike with the 820 in the beginning would suggest that the whole thing was filmed on a bicycle, but think about it; how can you film with two devices while steering a bike? (especially when you’re a paid actor and not a BMX rider). Even filming with a single phone in your hand, OIS or not is near impossible, it’s not as easy as you think to have the viewfinder in focus while doing something else- I struggle while filming reviews on my desk when I look away from the recorder for 5 seconds, try that while riding on a bike with a prototype phone in your hand.

Yes, the video was filmed from inside a van driving alongside the girl, but I’m quite sure that both videos were shot from INSIDE the van, after all we did see the Jig used to capture the photos (during the event) where it held the SGS3 besides the Lumia 920, I think that’s possible what the man in the van is holding that same contraption/jig while filming.

Pretend that that part of the video was really staged, does it make the technology or the rest of the video any less impressive?

That wasn’t the only example of the OIS in the video, and I think this YouTube comment sums up my thoughts perfectly:

UPDATE: (from nokia)

"Note: The Lumia 920 pictures in this post were taken using prototype hardware and software, and then reduced dramatically in size. In addition, the OIS video, above, was not shot using the Lumia 920."”

Nokia Lumia 920 vs iPhone 4S – low light PureView and screen sensitivity test

Posted: 05 Sep 2012 12:07 PM PDT

This image was on Anandtech showing a comparison between the screens of the Nokia Lumia 920 against the iPhone 4S.

I’m not sure if they’re doing something wrong on the iPhone as it doesn’t even look like the brightness is on. Perhaps the lighting has adjusted too much to a possibly brighter screen on the 920?

http://images.anandtech.com/doci/6236/DSC_7972_575px.jpg

Actually, reading the article this is actually a camera test. That’s why it looks so dark on the 4S screen because it wasn’t able to capture as much light.

Nokia had a scene setup in the dark to test the Lumia 920′s low light camera performance. A vase with flowers was set inside a dark box with a port big enough for you to get a smartphone inside. Without using a flash or a tripod, low light performance of the 920 was pretty impressive:

http://www.anandtech.com/show/6236/hands-on-with-the-nokia-lumia-920-lumia-820

They say the super sensitive touch works really well. Cloth touch working on 920 that did not work on iPhone. Also, wireless charging was apparently seamless.

Hat tip to Dave and Gabor!
