Samsung Ativ S Preview – Galaxy S III With Windows Phone 8 and More (Video)

Posted: 10 Nov 2012 04:38 PM PST

The first Windows Phone 8 device to be announced wasn’t Nokia Lumia 920 or HTC 8X, but Samsung Ativ S, that was made official at IFA 2012. This device has a price tag of 560 euro in the UK and it’s basically a 4.8 inch smartphone that looks like a Galaxy S III relative with Windows Phone 8. And we’ve just received it for testing purposes…

We’re only here for a preview for now, but the review will be up as soon as possible. We’re dealing here with a 4.8 inch Super AMOLED HD handset, that measures 8.7 mm in thickness and weighs 135 grams, 50 grams lighter than the Nokia Lumia 920. This model supports HSPA+ 42 Mbps connectivity and does Full HD playback. It has a dual core 1.5 GHz processor, of the Snapdragon Krait kind and it comes with a Li-Ion 2300 mAh battery. At the back there’s an 8 megapixel camera with 1080p video capture, while upfront we’ve got a 1.9 megapixel shooter.

The back of the device feels like metal, but it’s actually a resilient plastic cover, that shelters the battery, microSD card slot and microSIM. This model also comes with NFC and in the video below we show its headphones, charger and USB cable. Samsung Ativ S seems to be a bit more compact than the Galaxy S III, or at least it will have you believing that, since it has a very well thought design. That’s it for now and we’ll be back with more impressions in a few days.

Angry Birds Seasons Haunted Hogs Review: Very Easy to Play Levels, Quite Spooky Halloween Release (Video)

Posted: 10 Nov 2012 02:46 PM PST

The 2013 levels of Angry Birds Seasons have came up with the Halloween released being the first. Dubbed Haunted Hogs, this  title graced the iOS devices with its presence a bunch of days ago, going for 99 cents in the Play Store. We tested the game on the iPhone 5 and you can check out the video review below to see what happened there.

First of all, this is the spookiest Angry Birds update so far, with that creepy eye on the wall, the scary screaming pig imitating a famous painting and all that. There are also brand new ghost bricks, that you can pass through, but otherwise they act like normal bricks. Pigs have also adopted the Halloween theme, not being dressed up as bats, Jason X or Frankenstein. Everything is adorned with pumpkins and in the background there are church bells to make everything creepier.

Bats will fly when a pumpkin is hit and there are zombie and ghost pigs as well. The concept stays the same: hit the green pigs with the angry birds shot from slingshots. Sadly, the game is very easy to play and I finished these 30 new levels in about 30 minutes or so, so it’s a very lite update. We give an 8 out of 10 and it’s pretty fun to play if you enjoy the occasional Angry Birds. You can download it from here on your iPhone.

Motorola Announces Jelly Bean Update for Droid RAZR M Model, Also Starts Test Drive Program

Posted: 10 Nov 2012 02:25 PM PST

If you like the latest in smartphones, you may be very interested in the Motorola Droid RAZR M model, the first one to actually offer an edge to edge screen. Also interesting is the fact that Moto has started offering the Jelly Bean update for this device and inaugurated a new Test Drive program.

Said program is similar to the previous soak tests that Motorola has been doing, but in a more exclusive way. Motorola mentioned that now they will only allow a select few hundred users to sign up for an early access to major updates, starting with Jelly Bean. The pre Jelly Bean users will have to stick with soak tests I guess, using the Motorola Feedback Network. As far as Droid RAZR M goes and its JB update, this model got the software update taking it to version 98.12.4, that gives it all the famous features like Google Now, a smoother UI and amplified notification area.

There’s also the automatic resize for widgets that are too big, an updated Circles widget, better data and connectivity quality, improved contacts sync and eliminated need to wait for manual or night time synchronization. If you own a Motorola Droid RAZR M and haven’t received the update, you should pull it yourselves, by going to Settings > About phone > System updates > Download.

Nokia Lumia 920 Buyers Line Up for the Purchase, Initial Stocks are Low

Posted: 10 Nov 2012 08:58 AM PST

The images included in this article show an interesting reality: queues in front of AT&T stores in the day when the Nokia Lumia 920 is launched. While this may sound good for Nokia and Microsoft, it’s also bad news for them, since the initial stock of devices was quite small.

Of course this is no Apple queue, but even those have become smaller lately, or at least they were that way for the iPad Mini. When it comes to the AT&T Lumia 920, about a dozen or two of people waited outside in line to get the device. Customers have took to Twitter to report that the stock is very low, being somewhere between 5 to 20 devices per store. Also, it appears that in some areas you can’t buy the Nokia Lumia 920 off contract.

The reasons to get worked about this launch are clear: you get the latest Windows Phone OS, WP8 and an 8.7 megapixel Pureview camera, as well as a PureMotion HD+ display. There’s also 32GB of storage, 1 GB of RAM and even LTE available. Nokia Lumia 920 uses a dual core 1.5 GHz Snapdragon processor with Adreno 225 GPU. Tempted by this one?

Apple Sued Yet Again by VirnetX, iPhone 5 also Involved This time

Posted: 10 Nov 2012 04:28 AM PST

VirnetX is an Internet security software company, that has been awarded $368.2 million after suing Apple for its FaceTime service/apps, that infringes on their patents. Now the same company has filed another suit against the Cupertino company, involving new products in the mess.

They’re addressing 4 new patents this time, that involve the iPhone 5, iPad Mini and the latest generations of the iPod Touch and the iPad, plus the latest Macintosh computers. Because of the recent release of said products, they couldn’t be included in the trial from November 6th 2012, said VirnetX. The firm is looking for damages and injunctive relief yet again. VirnetX has a history of winning big against big companies, so we’re not surprised to hear Microsoft had to pay up $200 million back in 2010 for infringing patents regarding a virtual private network technology used in the Windows and Office communication products.

VirnetX is also battling it out with Cisco and Avaya right now and it has licensing agreements with many more firms, like NEC or Mitel, a phone systems maker. If they keep this up they’ll become Apple’s new nemesis, replacing Samsung…
