New Windows Phone Store for Windows Phone 8

Posted: 07 Nov 2012 02:35 PM PST

Windows Phone Store replaces Marketplace not just in name but with a few updates.

You can see a quick screenshot of the whole panorama experience above (Now, like in old WP7, doesn’t that make for an intriguing tablet layout?)

There are a couple of posts from the Windows Phone blog at Microsoft to explain what’s going on:

Marketplace search has apparently been improved. I complained about this a few months back and it seems to be on it’s way to being somewhat useful now.

The WP blog says they’re far from finished.
WP7.5 will get some under-the-hood changes. Marketplace name will remain.
As part of the infrastructure upgrade, Windows Phone 7.5 devices were automatically sent a new configuration file that pointed them to the new Store service. But some customers—about two to four percent—have phones that for various reasons can't automatically retrieve the new file. In the next few weeks, these customers will see a specially-created app in Marketplace called Refresh Marketplace. Once they run it, they'll enjoy the same improved app search and smarter app lists as new Windows Phone 8 users.

Video: Building a global mapping platform

Posted: 07 Nov 2012 02:19 PM PST

This video is about Nokia building maps. There’s an interesting snippet of 3D mapping walkthrough/flyover there, something that utilises the age old Nokia Maps 3D. Nokia’s map platform allows location based experiences from other OSes/internet OSes/web based etc.

Nokia’s got some serious mapping data going on. With Truck navigation, it can tell you about which path to take that’s best for the height, length and width of that vehicle so it doesn’t unnecessarily get stuck.

Because location is playing a central role in Nokia’s strategy, and because of its global footprint, quality and completeness of performance the Nokia Location Platform offers great opportunities for third parties to build upon. We provide the location platform solution they want, regardless of their business and/or screen strategy. We’ve invested in the platform, so they don’t have to, guaranteeing them fast, easy access to continuous

Nokia strikes deal with KPN in the Netherlands

Posted: 07 Nov 2012 12:37 PM PST

'Carrier relations are vital for the success of any phone' a sentence we have heard or read many times in relation to Nokia. Some even said that Nokia burned its bridges a while ago when they made the switch to Windows Phone. There might be some truth to that matter, but with AT&T being an aggressive player on the US market for Nokia it might not seem that it is all doom and gloom.

Today Nokia announced that it has struck a deal with KPN, the largest carrier in the Netherlands, to provide their Sales and Marketing department with 900 Windows Phone 8 devices. Not only that, KPN has said their confidence in Windows Phone is growing each day and that they see it as the 3rd player they can offer to their customers and use as a differentiator to position themselves as a company.

KPN also underlines the corporate benefit that Windows Phone can potentially offer with its tight integration with other Microsoft products and services.

Eventhough the Netherlands is just a small market compared to for example the US, it is evident that carriers are seeing potential in Windows Phone and thus Nokia. Hopefully this will be the start of the road to the top again for Nokia.

On a side note, release the damn phones already in the Netherlands, Nokia. ;)

Video: Nokia Lumia 920 avec Windows Phone 8 – Présentation complète

I don’t know if this video is new. It’s a Nokia Lumia 920 WP8 presentation by Nokia France.

The yellow (as garish as it is to some) looks wonderfully vibrant to me. It makes the lumia look like it’s glowing. I was just trying to order a 920 from Phones4U but at the last minute, it turns out they don’t have solid information from Nokia as to when they could get the yellow one out so could only offer black and white. I asked our readers on Facebook and Yellow still seems to be a more popular choice given the two. Black is great and all, but Yellow is an immediate grand entrance. You’re not going to misplace this phone in a crowd with ease. It also kinda makes the phone look smaller (like it’s just the black glass portion). It was also our readers pick here too.

Video: Nokia Lumia 920 sample video, macro and Nokia Lumia 820 gig recording

Posted: 07 Nov 2012 07:05 AM PST

Couple of sample videos. Here’s a nice one recorded by TechRadar on the Nokia Lumia 920, with low light night (fireworks), close up macro, subway etc. The videos are looking nice and sharp in Macro with quick focusing.

Next up a recording of a gig by the Nokia Lumia 820.

Accept performing Metal Heart in Tampere (Pakkahuone), Finland during their show 6th of November 2012.

Accept are:
Mark Tornillo – Lead Vocals
Wolf Hoffmann – Guitars
Herman Frank – Guitars
Peter Baltes – Bass
Stefan Schwarzmann – Drums

Video taken with Nokia Lumia 820 phone. Unbelievable band, amazing song and amazing sound quality for a phone! Yes, I am a Nokia employee but I (and my friends) can guarantee that this is not a tweaked video! I had continuous auto focus on, which caused some problems with flashing lights. Now it’s turned off for the next shots ;)

Leaked: Nokia Lumia 830? More rainbow lumias.

Posted: 07 Nov 2012 06:23 AM PST

Above is supposedly are leaked Nokia Lumia 830, supposedly the successor to the 710 despite having a higher designation than the 800 successor – 820.

I found it funny that WPC suggests it looks HTC-ish, you mean the HTCrap Lumia Wannabe?

If anything, they remind me of my Old Omnia 7 when I put a bright yellow case on them.

Does it look slim enough?

Nokia Giving Away Free Charging Pads? Find out on 16/11/12

Posted: 07 Nov 2012 05:10 AM PST

It would appear Nokia are planning to give free wireless chargers (via redemption). It is not clear on any of the terms or conditions. In fact, we know nothing, except that we need to wait until November 16 (next week) to find out how we can redeem our free charger.

I took a look at the page source to see if we could find out more. It says the site is copywritten by Opia Ltd., who, after some googling, is a promotional partner for both Microsoft and Nokia. Let’s hope we see some free chargers being given away soon!

Cheers for the tip Glenn!

Video: Nokia Maps 3.0 demoed on Nokia lumia 920 (for WP8)

Posted: 07 Nov 2012 02:30 AM PST

Here’s Nokia Maps 3.0 for navigating on foot, taking shortcuts that cars can’t take such as parks, alley-ways and stairs; guided by landmarks (not always streetnames) and even indoor navigation. It apparently seamlessly integrates with Nokia Drive, so even though there are two separate apps, it should appear as a more connected, fluid experience.

There’s an article over at NokConv too:

Nokia Lumia 920 and 820 user manuals

Posted: 07 Nov 2012 02:22 AM PST

As usual, following the internal photos are some juicy user manuals. I could not find them on the official Nokia page yet but you can see them bere:

920

820

The only time Nokia fans would probably read the manual is before owning the device just to get a taster of what they’re getting.
