Lumia 920 PureView Imaging Q&A: Send Us Your Questions!

Posted: 23 Nov 2012 01:37 PM PST

The title says it all, the folks over at Nokia connects were kind enough to arrange a Q&A session for us with the Imaging team responsible for the amazing Lumia 920 (this seems like a good time to remind you that although Damien was a great asset at Nokia, there’s a whole team of dedicated hard workers who bring us this “magic” – so all is not lost). Just like last time with the Lumia 820, post any questions you might have to the team down below and we’ll be sure to pass them.

just make sure your questions are imaging related seeing how the interview is with the imaging team only, and not the product managers/designers, so if you want something clarified about the magic behind Optical image Stabilization, or floating lenses, or anything else just let us know!

*Note: The Q&A is on Monday morning so you have until then to submit your questions.

Lumia 920 Available Through Amazon for just 1 Cent (Black Only)

Posted: 23 Nov 2012 12:27 PM PST

Sorry couldn’t help it, but this is one penny I’m not willing to give up.

Yesterday we reported that the Lumia 920 being indefinitely out of stock at Amazon due to tremendous demand, shorty afterwards the White color also ran out of stock leaving only the black. now it would seem Amazon want to finish off their full stock by pricing the Lumia 920 at only a Penny. The catch being that you can only get it in black, and you might have to wait a week or two to get your order, still a bargains a bargain right?

If you have a take-a-penny-leave-a-penny jar lying around help yourself and order one from the link down below:

Video & Gallery: Nokia 808 PureView vs. Sony Nex-5N (Dedicated Camera)

Posted: 23 Nov 2012 08:36 AM PST

Taken with the 808 PureView

We’ve seen loads of comparisons and videos pitting the Nokia 808 against almost every device imaginable  besting almost all of them, the HTC One X, the SGS3, The Note 2, the iPhone5 none of them proved to be a match for the great 808 pureview. But what about dedicated cameras?

I recently picked up a Sony Nex-5N (Nex = Sony’s line of mirrorless cameras) so I decided to do a little testing, pitting it against the 808; the results are below:

Video:

Video-wise both the 808 and the Nex shoot at 1080p (while filming I thought that the Nex was shooting at 60fps but it turned out to be 30fps, same as the 808). You can notice that the colors look brighter on Nex, while the 808 dulls them out a bit; in reality the true colors is someone between the two (best noticeable on the orange roof tiling), it seems that the 808 couldn’t capture enough light due to the fog and clouds, while the Nex’s larger lens overcompensated for the lack of light by pumping up the color saturation. I think the Nex has the edge in overall video quality (and it comes in a much smaller file size).

Zoom wise the Nex-5N was fit with the standard 18-55 zoom lens, which provides a decent amount of zoom, but is still no match for the zooming prowess of the 808 which almost doubled the zoom without any loss in quality.

In terms of audio recording I had expected the 808 to be clear a winner, but was surprised by the quality of the NEX as well (I hadn’t known that it records in stereo as well) so I’ll call that one as a tie; but it is worth noting that both the 808 and the NEX did an amazing job cancelling out the wind interference (I was on the rooftop of a 7 floor apartment building on a very windy day, yet you can barely hear any at noise at all).

Unfortunately I still haven’t figured out how to do side by side video processing (plus Sony Vegas seems to have disappeared off my laptop after upgrading to Windows 8 so they are two separate videos)

Photos:

For photos all the NEX’s images were taken WITHOUT flash (seeing how the flash is an external add-on that I was too lazy to go get from my room); I left the 808′s flash on auto in all shots expect the stairwell where I turned it off, as well as the “cat” as it was giving false colors and washing out some details. In general I realized that the 808 is “Flash Happy” firing the Xenon flash even when there was more than enough light to take a picture without flash.

As usual click on the image to view the full res on Flickr

Wet Flower: This was taken on Full auto on both, flash was not used for the 808; here I moved both less than 2 feet away and then zoomed in.

View From the edge of the road (note the fog, lesser cameras such as the 900 can’t even show fog, making it appear as dust or just a blurry sky)

Bookshelf: image take indoors in medium lighting (not actual lights, but the blinds were open, the 808 insisted on firing the flash here):

Stone Walkway- here the pureview had some trouble getting the right colors in, the picture looks un-appealing compared to the NEX

Hitch Hikers guide to the galaxy (highly recommended) both were taken about 2 feet away from the subject- here the 808 seems to have pulled off a better shot than the Nex did (pretty sure it was with flash)

Book- here the 808′s Xenon flash definitely came in handy; taken from about two feet away.

Potted Plant- for long I’ve criticized Apple’s cameras since they give unrealistic colors, unfortunately this also happens with the 808 from time to time, as seen here it gave off a very appealing deep green color, which is unfortunately un-real

Sleeping Cat- here surprisingly the 808 managed to gather more light than the Nex, even though the flash was not fired… impressive stuff.

Dirty Keyboard- here the 808′s flash-happiness gave me alot of trouble, where it would bounce off the keys making them look shiny and ugly, took about 4 tries to get this pic on auto

Dark Stairwell- this one as expected wasn’t really fair against the 808 seeing how I turned off the flash here, but this is one test I’m looking forward to retaking with the 920-

Apartment entrance- this was an interesting one seeing how the background was lit from a distance but the immediate area was significantly darker, although the Nex got much more detail of the actual interior the background is equal quality on both (look at the raindrops

Volks Wagon- here for some reason the 808 had a blue tint in it (look at the background) something we’re used to seeing on the Lumias, mostly the 800.

Video: Ducks – Nokia Lumia 920 video sample (1080p)

Posted: 23 Nov 2012 08:05 AM PST

Here’s a quick video sample from the Nokia Lumia 920. I had to switch it up to 1080p because by default it’s at 720p. I’m not sure if that makes a difference in terms of stabilisation quality.

This is by no means a scientific test or whatnot. I was on my way to a lecture and passed by the pond at the hospital. The ducks looked interesting so I walked along side ss the yellow Nokia Lumia 920 attracts non-humans too. As I’m walking and the ducks are following, it doesn’t look like I’m moving.

Also, the 1080p sample looks quite badon youtube  in comparison to being played natively on my pc. Oh, speaking of youtube, their post processing for stabilisation works really well too. Granted the video is darker and more pixelated, but it works well. I tried to reupload another sample to process afterwards but youtube won’t let me keep it there because it’s technically a duplicated file.

P.S. Phones4U hasn’t managed to get me a replacement unit yet so I haven’t been able to test the LED flash at all. Fingers crossed one will appear tomorrow. One of the sales rep is really trying so much appreciated from Jackie. Another one however told me that if someone wants to buy the phone they can’t hold it for me :/

Imaging Guru, Damian Dinning leaving Nokia?

Posted: 23 Nov 2012 07:46 AM PST

Terrible news that I’m finding hard to come to terms with. Supposedly, Nokia’s imaging Guru, Damian Dinning is leaving Nokia.

AmateurPhotographer reports that one of the main driving forces behind Nokia’s imaging department will no longer be at Nokia. A statement apparently from Nokia UK said:

Following the relocation of key strategic roles to Finland, and with great reluctance, Damian Dinning has made a personal decision to leave the company effective 30 November 2012

What are you playing at Nokia? I hope there’s some silver lining to this story. Or that it’s not true :/ I was just tweeting today about how much I was also enjoying PureView in the new Lumia 920. Blergh.

As noted in comments, the imaging team at Nokia is still there working hard to keep Nokia ahead in imaging.

Cheers Mapantz and steelicon for the tip!

Nokia Reportedly Received 2.5 Million Orders for the Lumia 920

Posted: 23 Nov 2012 12:47 AM PST

Yahoo China reports that since the launch of the New Lumia range (less than a month ago); over 2.5 Million Lumias have been sold/pre-ordered/booked.

This report comes in after Nokia officially launched the Lumia line-up in HongKong and began taking preorders/bookings; we previously saw the Lumia sell out within minutes went it went available on Amazon China, but the increased interest was probably due to the pricing error. If these numbers are anywhere near accurate then things are looking up, especially with the holiday season starting next month.

GSM Arena’s Nokia Lumia 820 battery test (and Review)

Posted: 22 Nov 2012 11:35 PM PST

From the people who know how to do proper reviews, here’s GSM Arena’s thorough battery tests on the Nokia Lumia 820.

The Nokia Lumia 820 will get you through the day, maybe two work days if you're frugal with the web browsing, but hooking up the charger at night will probably be quite common. That wireless charging shell is starting to sound like a must-have accessory for the 820.

Whilst we’re looking at the battery test, here’s the full review:

Video: Nokia Lumia 822 for Verizon review

Posted: 22 Nov 2012 11:30 PM PST

Here’s PhoneArena’s video review of the Nokia Lumia 822 for Verizon.

  • Feels well made but slippery
  • Decent compact device
  • Uncluttered, simple, interactive, easy to use UI
  • Small text look pixelated, not as sharp as 920 but other than that, internet browsing is pretty good
  • Flash not supported
  • Not the best keyboard we’ve seen, doesn’t take up the full size (Use the damn thing for a while first before commenting! I thought it was silly not to take up the whole space but this keyboard is amazingly quick, accurate and the autocorrect is top notch.)
  • What a crazy, crazy comment that when in portrait, the physically smaller keyboard is a ‘decent’ size because it fits side to side. DUUUUDE. The keyboard is even smaller in landscape. What the duck are you talking about? It’s not all about having a physically larger keyboard but a usable one.
  • Keyboard not too terribly bad. WRONG. This keyboard is awesome.
  • I’m done watching.
