Faulty LED flash on my Nokia Lumia 920?

Posted: 16 Nov 2012 07:02 PM PST

I just got back with my friends from a night out, testing the Nokia Lumia 920 on the way and for some reason, the LED flash does not want to work anymore. My phone is not even 2 days old.

It may just be a bad batch. It might be some software issue. I know that the LED light apps I tried would not switch the LED on prior to tonight but the LED flash was definitely working as you can see the red eye in the pictures I took earlier.

What’s going on huh? Also I noticed, the flash bit seems to be a little too easy to press and move. Say what?

It’s a good thing the 920 is not designed for flash pictures. But still, what an inconvenience. I also opted not to have the Phones4U instant replacement insurance because I didn’t think I’d need it (and there’s some house insurance). It’s within their 14/28 day guarantee thing so I guess I can get a replacement.

No, the 920 has not been dropped or had anything spilt on it or any damage or whatever. It’s pristine. As mentioned, it’s barely over a day old in usage. Everything else works fine. Not that it should even be a problem as my 900 has had several drops and functions like it’s brand new.

BTW, the 808 is still the phone to take pictures on a night out. The 920 is great and probably better than other LED based phones but 808 really does wipe the floor with it. Fact. Although I do like having a smartphone platform I’m comfortable with and for the same phone to be able to take some okish low light flash pics.

Nokia #SwitchComics: Benefits of Super-Sensitive Touch

Posted: 16 Nov 2012 10:01 AM PST

Nokia UK’s Facebook page has published this cute comic simply showing off how awesome Super-Sensitive touch is, in what is hopefully the first of many #SwitchComics. I really like this brand of advertising seeing how it’s simple, funny and gets the point across without any BS, well done Nokia. (Looking forward to the Wireless charging edition).

Lumia 920 Battery Drain Issues Might be Due to Nokia Drive Running in Background (How to Fix)

Posted: 16 Nov 2012 09:54 AM PST

Although most reports are giving the Lumia 920 excellent battery life considering what a powerhouse it is (considering the extra bright, large screen, the super sensitive touch and much more). Yet apparently there have been reports of poor battery performance on the 920; the official Nokia support discussions have pinned it on apps running in the background rather than shutting down.

Claiming that since WP8 deals with multitasking in a different matter than WP7 did, it doesn’t always “freeze” apps in the background, depending on how it was programmed. One such app is Nokia Drive Beta, which seems to be a major consumer of battery power, as well as possibly Angry Birds Star Wars.

Some customers have reported battery life shorter than expected, a few others have reported device crashes. One possible cause which has been identified in the case of some customers reporting these symptoms has been that Nokia Drive has been used and is still operating in the background.

Unlike Windows Phone 7, the new Lumia models running Windows Phone 8 do not automatically freeze all apps when you open new apps without closing down those which are already open. One such app is Nokia Drive, which can contribute to high power consumption if it is running along with several other apps. Always ensure that Drive is closed after use

EDIT: Since we first published this information, Nokia has issued this statement:

“We have received reports of a small number of people experiencing unusual battery performance on their Nokia Lumia 920. This is not a concern being widely reported via our Nokia Care channels and feedback from many people is that the Nokia Lumia 920 enjoys great battery life for a high-end smartphone. We are investigating, but we currently suspect that some applications may be using power when left running in the background. While we learn more, we advise people when finished with an application to navigate away using the back button as this will close it rather than leaving it active in the background.”

2nd EDIT: We have also received information that the game ”Angry Birds: Star Wars” may also consume higher than expected power in the background if not properly closed. Games in general may have a high demand on system resources since many games test software and hardware to their limits in order to deliver an engaging, enjoyable and sometimes realistic experience; so we would strongly recommend that games are always closed properly after use.

Fixing this is rather simple as it only requires you toggle with your application settings, as can be seen in the helpful image down below:

If you wish, you can prevent Drive from running in the background.by following these steps:

  • Open Settings and scroll sideways to Applications
  • Select Background tasks
  • Select Nokia Drive
  • Select Block

Indulgence: Ridiculously Photogenic Nokia Lumia 920 in Electric Pikachu Yellow!

Posted: 16 Nov 2012 03:16 AM PST

The Nokia Lumia 920, like the N9 and 800 before it is a ridiculously photogenic phone. It just loves to have pictures taken and the camera loves it back even more because it always looks amazing!

Those sleek curved glass edges, the slick lines, it’s sublime. In electric pikachu yellow, the Nokia Lumia 920 is the funky, stunning model that walks into a room, grabbing all the attention and causing undue neck pain as you just can’t turn your head away from it.

Here’s a very random gallery I thought I’d take of just the Nokia Lumia 920 on it’s own. I’m sure that perhaps the black one may have continued the seamlessness of the curved screen a bit more but I’m infatuated with that bright electric yellow that just glows and lights up the room. It’s so hot it’s on fire.

Video: Bluetooth NFC with Nokia Lumia 920 and Nokia Play 360 (Nokia Music)

Posted: 16 Nov 2012 02:06 AM PST

So I was expecting to go into settings to activate NFC like I did with the N9 (as it was turned off by default) but to my surprise, tapping the Play360 with the Nokia Lumia 920 asked if I wanted to pair. Once I said yes, it paired up and all future connections were made simply by tapping the NFC locations together.

It’s a small thing but NFC should be left on by default. I’ve said many times before that whilst it might sound like a geeky feature, it’s actually something Joe Average would find super useful – natural interactions in connecting devices (as you have seen when we demoed the N9 with a few other NFC devices).

Cheers reebi for the tip: You don’t even need to turn on the Nokia Play 360. Just tap the NFC enabled Nokia (e.g. Nokia Lumia 920) and it will turn it on and do its witchcraftiness! Niiice!
