Microsoft says Q1 2013 for WP7.8 update

Posted: 28 Nov 2012 12:46 PM PST

There were rumours running around that today would be the day we would see the WP7.8 update. I’m a bit jaded regarding the Nokia scene with updates (remember the never ending promises for the Symbian ones? Though they did become more on time later on).

News from Microsoft says it’s coming ‘early Q1, 2013′ the same time the WP8 Apollo+ update perhaps?

We know you're eager to get the Windows Phone 7.8 update, and we want you to know that we're working closely with our hardware and carrier partners to get it tested, approved, and rolled out to as many devices as possible in early 2013. As we work to quickly get this in the hands of our loyal users, we're also striving to deliver a high-quality release and ensure a smooth transition for our widely expanded services.

Advertising Goofs: Samsung Galaxy S3 920 in Red, Exclusive from Walmart

Every now and then we stumble across an add that makes us scratch our heads, and wonder what on earth the person in charge was doing; today is another one of those days. With the launch of the Walmart Exclusive Samsung Galaxy SII 920 in RED! Which just happens to look exactly like a Lumia 920, but runs Android 4.0 (Blerg). Unfortunately the S3 920 is only available in stores, so good luck getting it anyplace other than your local Walmart :P

Still anyone want to place any bets on how long before Samsung makes their own lumia?

Videos: Nokia’s Next Hand-Model Reality Show

Posted: 28 Nov 2012 09:05 AM PST

Nokia Levant just published a series of video spoofs/Ads where they have a (hopefully mock) reality show looking for Nokia’s Next Hand Model. the videos seem to be quite old as they show off the N9 rather than the Lumias, but that doesn’t stop them from being hilarious (and borderline inappropriate like the “balls” joke in the second video. Since these were shot in Lebanon they use the usual mix of Arabic and English so you might understand bits and pieces of it, but trust me if you understood it all you’d crack a rib or two.

Here’s the main trailer showing clips from all the other spoofs:

Video #1- If you don’t understand Arabic I suggest you watch this one, seeing as it’s mostly in English, and it has a pretty funny inappropriate joke, what’s not to like?

Video #2- Hot Model:

Video #3- Egyptian Dude (Mostly Arabic):

Video #4- Professional Hand Model

Video #5-

Video #6- School Girl (is it just me or did the “we only want your hands” just sound “wrong”? and at one point he asks if she’s done any cosmetic surgery about her hands where the awkward reply was yes, but not in my hands… sounds fishy :P )

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LYMDjce4EOM&feature=relmfu

Video #7-

Edit: It turns out we covered the initial audition announcement way back in February: http://mynokiablog.com/2012/02/25/nokia-lebanon-nokias-next-hand-model-n9-campaign-explained/ Pretty interesting to see these videos surface after all this time, although some may not agree with me but I like this form of media/internet attention. Things like this will never make it to Tv Adverts, but they’re nice viral videos.

Thanks for pointing out or our old post Maurice_FA

Transfer My Data app (Nokia WP8) updated V2.1.1.4

Posted: 28 Nov 2012 08:46 AM PST

Mmm…Yellow is just sooo purrrty :P

The app that allows you to transfer contacts and messages over bluetoothhas a minor update. Not sure what.

The feedback app also seems to be updated today.

Strangely, this app doesn’t seem to work if you try to copy from another Windows Phone. At least I’m not getting any joy.

On the upside, all my contacts are already on my Microsoft Account. Messages however, are not. Well from now on they will be in WP8 backup but still…

Accessories: Nokia Wireless Charging Plate and Charging Pillow by Fatboy unboxing (Yellow and Blue)

Posted: 28 Nov 2012 06:21 AM PST

We received a nifty package from Finland, Nokia House this morning. Big thanks to the Nokia Conversations team for sending this to us, very much appreciated!

In a rush of excitement (and to get some uni work done too :p), it was quickly unboxed. This post would have been out sooner but I had to combine the unboxing with a quick demo after finding a euro-uk plug just after I turned the camera off for unboxing (my computer takes sooo long to process video :( :( )

In the box were two packages: Nokia Wireless charging plate in yellow, and a Nokia Charging Pillow from Fatboy. I have not seen the retail packaging for these before so this was new to me. It’s kind of a reverse unboxing with the photos as I filmed the unboxing first.

I’ve always enjoyed the idea of wireless/plug-free charging on my touchpad and now it’s on my Nokia Lumia 920 too. It’s just super convenient to rest the device on the charger, and not fiddle with wires. It’s of course not that much trouble to plug in but the ease of charging by placing on a flat surface (one hand) is wonderful. Also, you can charge with cases on. Cases that fully surround the phone.

The connections surprised me. I thought it would be a standard Nokia charger with MicroUSB to the plate. But it’s like a pin connector.

Just wonderfully convenient.

Perfect desk or bedside table accessory

Matte on top with rubbery grip

Shiny at the bottom, with rubbery grip

It’s basically a bean bag for a phone :D It’s very well made.

Official Nokia Site Redesigned, Loses the Formality, Gets Cozy

Posted: 28 Nov 2012 06:07 AM PST

This one has been a long time coming, but Nokia have finally revamped Nokia.com, giving it a fresh new look that beats the old stale “select Region page”. The new site is colorful, vibrant and attractive, showing off the latest headlines and releases; and somehow manages to be professional yet informal at the same time; I love it! The new site also adds a bit of social presence to Nokia pinging back to teh pfficial Facebook and twitter feeds of Nokia, as well as posting some articles from Nokia conversations, not bad.

Check it out here: http://www.nokia.com/global/ (note some of the regional sites are yet to be re-designed)

And most importantly the mobile site has also been redesigned to match the desktop version, and give just as beautiful of an experience. The reason behind the beautiful look on allscreen sizes is because the site is actually “responsive” to screensize, meaning itenlarges/shrinks depending on how much real estate is available, pretty awesome.

So what do you guys think? You like the new re-design?

Insane Video Stabilization Test; Lumia 920 Tied to a Jeep on A Desert Safari

Posted: 28 Nov 2012 05:54 AM PST

Lumia 920

The word insane hardly goes far enough to describe the lengths MEAMobileReview went to test out the OIS on the Lumia 920. As you can see in the image above they zip ties it to the front bumper of a Jeep/SUV in the middle of the deserts of Dubai, and went for a little ride; the results are what you see below:

The stabilization is honestly amazing, No jitters or bumps so smooth it looks unreal, I’m honestly lost for words

Check out the full story behind the test over at MEAMobileReview

Nokia City Lens updated to 1.5 Beta for WP7 Lumia

Posted: 28 Nov 2012 05:33 AM PST

Pino has posted on Nokia Conversations that Nokia City Lens has received a beta update, for the Lumia 710, 800 and 900 (610 does not have a compass). With the update, it brings the ability to “freeze” the viewfinder, display only results in your line of sight (for certain cities), and also pinning individual categories and search results to your homescreen.

Here is a look at what's new for Nokia City Lens 1.5 Beta:

  • Sightline – De-clutter your surroundings. With the new Sightline feature in City Lens, you can narrow your view to just what's in your direct line of sight, making it easier to spot great places that are right in front of you.
  • Freeze view – Browse more naturally. When scanning your surroundings in camera view, you can now freeze your view and study your options without having to keep your phone pointed at the target. Just tap and the screen "freezes," letting you browse the scene more comfortably.
  • Quick info – Get the essentials in camera view. Tap a virtual sign once to view the place's address overlaid on your display while you keep scanning. Then tap again to share, get directions, or view reviews, photos, and more.
  • Pin favorite categories to start – Your most common searches with a tap. City Lens now lets you pin favorite categories to your home screen. Now wherever you are, you can find something you love nearby with just a tap.
  • Create Live Tiles – What you want at a glance. With new Live Tile support, you can easily see when your favorite places are nearby. Just pin a favorite search to your home screen and right in the tile you'll see your closest options without even having to launch the app.

If you have one of the devices mentioned above, and are interested in trying it out, simply hit the Search button on your Lumia, then the eye, to scan this QR-code.

Name that Nokia – [on Coronation Street]

Posted: 28 Nov 2012 03:23 AM PST

Chris emailed us another screen snapped from National UK telly showing quite prominently a Nokia on the screen. It was on the top UK soap, Coronation Street.

Nokia’s were once the obvious phone to see on film/tv but we have noticed them replaced for iPhones/Droids. It’s nice to see them slowly returning casually into TV shows (possibly as a reflection of culture rather than obscene product placement).

Cheers Chris W for the tip!
