IFA 2012: Samsung Unveils First Windows Phone 8 Handset ATIV S

Posted: 29 Aug 2012 02:35 PM PDT

Samsung took everyone by surprise today, by unveiling the Windows Phone 8 handset ATIV S. This is a premiere, being the first WP8 device officially announced till now. This model comes with a new 4.8 inch screen with a HD Super AMOLED panel, a 1.5 GHz dual core Qualcomm CPU.

Other features include an 8 megapixel camera, 1.9 megapixel front camera and a 2,300 mAh battery. We also get 1 GB of RAM, Gorilla Glass 2 screen protection and 16 or 32 GB of storage. The device measures 8.7 mm in thickness and its body is made of brushed aluminum. It also has a microSD card slot, something that Windows Phone 7 devices didn’t have, or at least most of them didn’t. Ativ S also has NFC, for payment and file sharing purposes and will get a bunch of Samsung apps like the Music Hub and the Media Hub for US market.

Samsung Ativ S is only the start of the Windows Phone 8 avalanche that will go live this month, especially starting on September 5th, at Nokia World. For a while there we thought that Samsung would give up on Windows Phone, since they haven’t launched that many models, but now they prove loyal, being the first to launch a WP8 device.

IFA 2012: Sony Unveils New Xperia Phones: Xperia T, Xperia V and Xperia J

Posted: 29 Aug 2012 11:35 AM PDT

Sony is a big presence at IFA 2012, unveiling a bunch of new Xperia phones, as well as the first Xperia tablet. The newcomers in the handset area are the Xperia T, Xperia V and Xperia J, all of them evolving from the idea of the Xperia Arc design. The Xperia T is a global flagship model, pictured below.

This device comes with a 4.6 inch screen, with 720p screen resolution and a scratch proof glass. Under the hood there’s a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor, a dual core Krait CPU at 1.5 GHz, a popular solution nowadays. To that we add 1 GB of RAM and an Adreno 225 GPU. The same Xperia T comes with a 13 megapixel camera with LED flash, able to shoot 1080p video and it’s accompanied by a front camera capable of doing 720p videos. The device measures 9.35 mm and weighs 139 grams. You should also know that the Xperia T has a 1850 mAh battery.

It also has 16GB of storage and a microSD card slot. The handset has two versions: one with LTE and one with HSPA+. There’s also a slightly tweaked version, the Xperia TX, identical to the Xperia T, but headed to Asia and replacing the CPU with a Snapdragon S3, still dual core at 1.5 GHz, but accompanied by the Adreno 220 GPU and a 1750 mAh battery. And here comes the Xperia V, pictured below.

This model is LTE enabled and comes with IP57 certification, so it’s dust and water protected (one meter, 30 minutes). It adopts a 4.3 inch 720p screen, a 13 megapixel camera with 1080p capture and the Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor at 1.5 GHz. It also has 1GB of RAM and the Adreno 225 GPU. Finally we get 8GB of storage and a microSD card slot, as well as a 1750 mAh battery. The smartphone weighs 120 grams, measures 10.7 mm in thickness and comes with a 1750 mAh battery.

Finally, the Xperia J has a 4 inch screen, with FWVGA resolution and Gorilla Glass protection. This model has a single core 1 GHz Scorpion CPU, 512 MB of RAM and Android 4.0 ICS, so it fits in the lower price range area. It has 4 GB of storage and a microSD card slot. The camera at the back is a 5MP unit and the Xperia J is actually pretty thin for an entry level unit: 9.2mm to be more precise. It’s still a bit heavy, at 130 grams. It packs in a 1750 mAh battery, apparently.  Picture of the Xperia J:

Motorola and Intel Send Out Invites to September 18th Event in London

Posted: 29 Aug 2012 07:17 AM PDT

Motorola and Intel have been official partners for a while now and there will be an event to certify their cooperation. Taking place on September 18th, the two companies’ big event will probably involve a smartphone with Intel CPU, an initiative that has been rumored to happen since earlier this year.

The invitation to the press event on the 18th reveals the Intel logo pretty proeminently depicted at the top. There’s also a motto saying “Let us take you to the edge”, a hint to the recent Motorola Blade codename that was leaked together with some images. There’s also a speculation that the phone will be called Edge, but we can’t confirm any of the naming patterns. Recent leaks seem to point towards a device that adopts the current RAZR aesthetic.

Anyway, London and September 18th are two pieces of information you must remember. This new Motorola model will join the likes of Lenovo K800, Lava XOLO X900, Orange San Diego and MegaFon Mint, the latest Medfield-based handsets. Maybe the newcomer will adopt a new generation of Intel CPU, who knows?

Just Announced: LG Optimus L9 Features 4.7 Inch IPS Display, Android 4.0

Posted: 29 Aug 2012 01:37 AM PDT

LG has just announced a brand new Android smartphone, the Optimus L9, that comes with a 4.7 inch IPS display and Android 4.0 ICS. This is a midrange phone that fits right below the LG Optimus G, unveiled yesterday. The device’s budget oriented nature is revealed by the 1 GHz dual core processor and 1 GB of RAM.

On the OS side, we’ve got a custom version of Android 4.0 with LG’s skin on top. At the back there’s a 5 megapixel camera and a VGA front shooter for video calls. LG didn’t mention a screen resolution, but at least we know they used an IPS panel here, so broader viewing angles are a sure thing. Also improved brightness is guaranteed on this model, compared to the regular LCD. We also get 4 GB of onboard storage and a high density 2,510 mAh battery, that uses the company’s SiO+ technology. There are no runtime figures here, aside from the “all day” usual performance.

LG Optimus L9 measures 9.1 mm in thickness, weighs 125 grams and has metallic highlights, that make the device look more elegant. As far as software goes, the on screen keyboard is able to change layout depending on the right or left hand usage. There’s also QMemoTM on board for recording notes (handwritting support is included, but no stylus. Another included feature is QTranslator, that uses OCR and online translation tool to convert foreign text into native language. Expect more details from IFA 2012.

LG Spectrum 2 Leaks, Verizon Version and Accessories Included

Posted: 29 Aug 2012 12:45 AM PDT

LG Spectrum 2 has leaked, now shown with 3 different accessories. Those include a car mount and a desktop dock among others. There’s also a shot of the handset inside a case with a kickstand at the back. The phone appeared on the CelleBrite system, used by carriers to transfer information (contacts list for example), from one phone to another.

Spectrum is supposed to pack a 4.7 inch True HD IPS display, a dual core 1.5 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 processor and 1 GB of RAM. Other features include an 8 megapixel camera at the back and a 1.3 MP shooter at the front, plus a 2150 mAh battery. Android 4.0 is preinstalled on this newcomer and the phone is based on the LG Optimus LTE 2, that has 2 GB of RAM on board, so it would be cool if it borrowed that aspect from it.

We have no idea when this model will be launched or the price tag it will get, but what’s sure is that Verizon will offer it, most likely with LTE support. It may even end up competing with another LG product, the Intuition, the rebranded Verizon version of the LG Optimus Vu. Between a phablet that’s 5 inches in diagonal and this 4.7 inch smartphone, what would you choose?
