Leaked?: Yellow Nokia Lumia w/ WP8 – Think Lumia 900 with curved screen

Posted: 06 Aug 2012 08:19 PM PDT

WP8-RUMOR1

Thanks to a tip from my friend Norman, WPDang have apparently gotten photos from Weibo (essentially Chinese Twitter) of what looks like a Nokia Lumia 800/900 hybrid. By that, I mean, it has the size of the Lumia 900, but with the curved screen of the 800. What a minute, we have heard this before!

As usual, we need to take this with pinches of salt, but honestly, having the pictures, along with hearing the info from a trusted source a while back, I am excited. One of the things that I’ve found annoying with the Lumia 900 is the bezel. This will change things, not only for me, but a lot of other users.

Here is the best image to wet your appetite. Of course, we only see the homescreen. It may only be running WP 7.8, therefore be a device that will never be released to market. Still, we can dream right?

Lumiappaday #265: Millionaire demoed on the Nokia Lumia 900

Posted: 06 Aug 2012 12:04 PM PDT

There are at least two versions of Who Wants to be a Millionaire on Marketplace, a fancy (paid/expensive) XboxLive version and this free one. Not as fancy but it gets the job done for playing a game of general knowledge.

My Dream Nokia #61: Nokia Lumia 960 Tab, E7 like 7″ tilt keyboard W8 tablet concept

Posted: 06 Aug 2012 08:27 AM PDT

Concept MyDreamNokiass are pouring in. Here’s another stunning work from Edgar Mkrtchyan. It’s a beautiful tilt slider, E7 style with a 7″ screen.

This could almost count as that hybrid OPK once mentioned. The specs look great, nothing out of reach but certainly enough to make me throw my money at the screen.

Hello,
I finally finished my concept of “Lumia Nokia 960 Tab” (the keyboard took me a long time)
few months ago I read a speech by Stephen Elop about a new form factor integrating Windows 8 RT, so I tried to design something classic that everyone loves, and which remains in the Nokia mind.

  • -Design: Body in polished aluminum, backlit keyboard, form factor Nokia E7
  • -OS & CPU: RT 8 & Windows dual / quad core 1.8 GHz
  • -Screen: 7 “AMOLED touchscreen ClearBack glass, 1600×900 pixels, GorillaGlass, anti fingerprints, anti-reflection screen
  • -Heignt / Weight: 200x102x12 mm, 390 g
  • -Battery: 4300 mAh
  • -12 Mpix sensor, 1080p recording, LED + xenon flash, 2 MP camera front
  • -Memory: 64/128 GB mass memory, expandable with Micro SD Card
  • -Conectivity: 2 micro USB (USB OTG support), HDMI, DLNA certification, Nokia AV 3.5, Bluetooth 3.0, NFC.
  • -2 High quality loudspeakers

if you have ideas to improve the design, thank you for the mention in the comments.

I’m loving the N9/800ness but with complete curves to the side (like #54)

Drool. Xenon :p

I’d love to see something N97/E7 form factor reemerge at Nokia. Hardware wise, they were pretty impeccable – well, E7 at least (N97 had some awful build quality issues).

About "My Dream Nokia"

I'm sure you've dreamt up your PERFECT Nokia device/UI. What it would look like, what it would feel like, what features it would have. Why don't you share it with the world? Or at least with other Nokia fans .

It could be your own photoshopped or rendered work (seriously, you don't need mega skills in either, basic paint job is often enough to convey a concept) of your dream product.

SEND this in similarly to tips@mynokiablog.com with the title "My Dream Nokia" and perhaps the model number (and a little description, maybe a few specs in the message area? Though this bit not necessary).

Who knows, maybe an image might flutter over to Nokia and through whatever route end up being real.

Thanks Edgar Mkrtchyan!

HuffingtonPost: Nokia 808 PureView at Olympics

Posted: 06 Aug 2012 07:46 AM PDT

Huffington Post UK has been looking at the Nokia 808 PureView. Basing purely on reviews, they’ve dismissed Symbian (calling it a mess) but praise the 41mp camera. They seem shocked at the number, much like the first reactions to the Nokia 808 PureView. However with PureView in hand they were able to take samples of their own and see the power in action.

Please ignore the poor screenshot. I’m on a mobile connection that compresses the images.

Jolla Mobile buys Jolla.com

Posted: 06 Aug 2012 06:32 AM PDT

It was one of the first things we were looking for but now it seems Jolla have purchased the Jolla.com domain.

Apparently the price was $50,000. Quite a high sum though not as high given the importance to the company. At 50k, that apparently made it the 10th most expensive deal in July.

I don’t think there’s a site yet (not that I would know as my mobile bandwidth is now on restricted mode for using so much. Hopefully I’ll be connected to broadband tomorrow).

#N9Hacks: Unrestricted System Ui + Status Menu Extensions

Posted: 06 Aug 2012 02:40 AM PDT

I’ve been meaning to bring this to you guys for a while, especially since there has been lots of developments with both these tweaks, including my modding aim to have battery percent in the status bar. (Note: I didn’t do it, couldn’t learn QT quick enough).

So, first up is Unrestricted System UI. What this does is, once installed, replaces the default Status Bar, and Status Menu, and allows third party plugins. As you overwrite a system package, Inception is required for install (or Open Mode). Personally, I think it is worth it, but I am bias as it is the only way I can have my beloved Battery Percentage in the toolbar. Currently there are several plugins, such as MT-Toggles (Toggles for BT, Flashlight, Flight Mode, Power Saver etc.) and PresenceX (Availability menu swapped for Squircles of IM Accounts icons), Hacky Brightness (Volume-like bar to adjust Brightness on your device), Music Controls (Adds controls for the Music Player to your Status menu. It is also now hidden when not in use), Quick Status Updater (Update Facebook and Twitter straight from status menu, similar to iOS) and the potential to add more continues.

I have deleted the Native Bluetooth applet as I found there is no point in having it, and the toggle. The rest of the applets I mentioned above I have installed.

The other hack altering the Status Menu, is Status Menu Extensions. This hack can be installed on any device, without the need for inception or Open Mode, as it works in a very different way. It is less customisable and doesn’t allow for third party plugins to be created. It currently features the same style Brightness slider (as the dev of that created this hack), many toggles (BT, Orientation Lock, PSM, Manual Sync, Flashlight, Brightness [preset intervals], 3G/2G/Dual toggle, and the list goes on). It also includes PresenceX as, yep, you guessed it, the same developer.

Bloomberg reckons new Nokia Lumia could be out as early as September too

Posted: 06 Aug 2012 02:14 AM PDT

At the end of July, we heard some rumours that the new WP8 Nokia Lumia handsets may appear in September, ready for Nokia World. That’s merely weeks away.

TheVerge also reports on the topic due to some hints by Bloomberg that they could indeed be out as early as next month. This was mentioned by a person who was supposedly knowledgable of the matter. This plan isn’t yet public so that person wants to remain anonymous. I guess anyone leaking info would want to remain anonymous, no?

This would be ahead of the September 12 unveiling of the next greatest Jebus phone evarr.

Whether we see the new Nokia Lumia WP8s in September or not, every one is probably doubting Nokia’s ability to make it available in shops soon after, unlike of course the fruitier iThing which is probably already secretly in the shops right now brought in stealthily by CIA/Ninjas.
