Lumiappaday #287: TvPyx demoed on the Nokia Lumia 900 (UK TVGuide)

Posted: 29 Aug 2012 03:16 PM PDT

TvPyx is a Metro designed TVGuide for the UK. It works quite well in Metro. You can change your provider from Freeview to Freesat, VirginMedia or Sky. I would have liked if all the channels were available by default and prompts given to tell you you can just view certain channels. For a basic information presentation app, I found the lags here and there a little annoying.

Nokia welcomes Samsung back to Windows Phone – calls ATIV a ‘warm up act’ for the main event Lumia WP8 next week. New camera phone?

Posted: 29 Aug 2012 11:53 AM PDT

Did you guys know that Samsung had unveilled another iPhone looking device in the shape of a new Windows Phone, and the first Windows Phone 8 officially launched (though Nokia’s was the first WP8 to be seen – proto). [BTW, no not because it is simply a rectangle with rounded corners. But because of the dimensions, the proportions, the materials, the trim, button layout etc. It’s like the SG Ace for goodness sake).

I thought it felt a little bit like a slap in the face – that Nokia wasn’t first. Having said that, there wasn’t and isn’t much hoohah or excitement about it. A lot have been expressing surprise for one even being launched.

Nokia seem to be taking it well and are using it to welcome Samsung BACK to Windows Phone, an OS they might treat with more respect now that Apple is gunning for iDroidcopymachines (have you seen HTC’s iMac clone?)

Doug Dawson at Nokia tweeted the above picture:

#Nokia welcomes Samsung back to Windows Phone! Look for #Lumia next week in NYC! pic.twitter.com/80yY3Qu9

Don’t worry. Nokia knows what they have to do and a more assertive tweet from Doug previous to that one attempts to reassure another worried Nokia fan by calling Samsung’s WP8 a warm up act.

Something else that’s interesting. Maggie can’t go to the event next week as she’s getting married. Doug offers her a camera phone if she needs one. Is this the 808 he’s referring to? But he has a sly wink that to me represents wanting to let a big secret out? Or I may be just overly hoping :p.

…Eldar approves :p

Nokia and JBL bring JBL Playup, Nokia Play 360′s Brother

Posted: 29 Aug 2012 10:46 AM PDT

I love the Nokia Play 360. Every time I use it, I am shocked how such a loud and rich sound comes out of something so small. I get the same surprise when I experience compact JBL speakers, often found on some Dell laptops (their only saving grace).

http://conversations.nokia.com/2012/08/29/playup-nokia-and-jbl-kick-off-new-speaker-range-for-lumia/

NokConv reports that Nokia has teamed up with JBL to bring PlayUp speakers for Nokia.

Like the Play 360, these are NFC capable. They seem to be just slightly larger than the Play360 and about 200g heavier, with a battery lasting 10h (vs 20 in P360).

Cheers Amanuel and ph_eagle for the tip!

I’d love to hear how it compares to the Play360.

N9Appdate: Facebook updated to V1.4

Posted: 29 Aug 2012 03:56 AM PDT

This just popped up on my device, and from those on Twitter, it is popping up around the place.

No changelog was included with the update. From my own experience with the app in the past, and now, it seems to be a lot smoother, and less buggy.

If you’ve noticed anything else, let us know.

Update: dheeraj spotted a logout option now added to the settings of the app

Nokia promises things are about to change on September 5th 2012

Posted: 29 Aug 2012 02:57 AM PDT

Talk about pumping up the hype! Nokia have uploaded a video that seems to be promising huge things for September 5th.

The only huge thing I could accept is PureView Lumia, but that’s not realistically expected to arrive until Spring at the earliest.

How do you think Nokia will change things?

Things are about to change on 5 September 2012. Stay tuned!

Do you see any clues from this video?

In this video, NokiaDevForum show how to make S40 Apps with rich UIs using LWUIT.

LWUIT provides developers with an easy way to add rich UI components and features to Java apps. Now, LWUIT is delivered as part of the Nokia SDK 2.0 for Java, simplifying the development of engaging apps for Nokia Asha Touch phones. In this video you will see how to prepare for the creation of LWUIT based apps in the Nokia IDE for Java ME, code a simple app, use obfuscation to control the size of installation package, and run a contacts app example on a Series 40 phone.
