Lumiappaday #284: Mayan Calendar demoed on the Nokia Lumia 900 Posted: 26 Aug 2012 12:54 PM PDT This app is called Mayan Calendar. The developer contacted us a couple of weeks ago about their app. Not sure exactly what I’d do with it but in the video you can see what it does. There’s a countdown to what some believe is the ‘end of the world’. The app explains that’s merely the end of a ‘calendar’. There’s a nice little wheel calendar which I don’t particularly understand. #284) Mayan Calendar

Nokia Lumia 900 vs. Nokia 3310 Drop Test & Total Demolition with Sledgehammer Posted: 26 Aug 2012 10:37 AM PDT Here at MyNokiaBlog we love seeing phones put to the test of survival (especially me since I’m far from gentle with my phones); so here’s a nice special pitting the Lumia 900 against the indestructible Nokia 3310. The phones are first put through a scientifically accurate drop test, then when all else fails they beat the life out of them with a sledge hammer. *I do think it’s unfair that they only gave the 3310 one whack with the sledgehammer, but we can all attest to the fact that even though the outside plastic frame might be easily breakable the inner brick is a cinderblock. My favorite thing about the older Nokias is how easy it was to simply replace the cover, I think at one point I had about 5 different cases for my 2100 (which I personally think is tougher than the 3310). |
Video: Behind the scenes on Kunal Jankee’s Nokia 808 PureView high fashion photography shoot Posted: 26 Aug 2012 09:30 AM PDT Yesterday we saw some stunning images in a High fashion photo shoot by Kunal Jankee. Here is a behind the scenes look at that video.
The video below is shot on both a Canon 5D Mk III and a Nokia 808 PureView.

New Lumia WP8 soon, “Be excited…Be excited!” Posted: 26 Aug 2012 09:01 AM PDT Another thing just worth considering but not putting a lot of weight into. Makes sense to post now since a similar discussion was just opened in the previous post about a possibly new Lumia. Yesterday, Dave Trevaskus (From Nokia – Nokia UK Academy Manager, met him at Nokia world, he’s a great guy) was tweeting about the Apple case and how it was great that Apple recognised Nokia’s designs by bringing up a Lumia as something distinct and original. Makes sense as it’s a design many Apple fans themselves praised (various Mac/Apple/iPhone bloggers loving either N9 or Lumia 800). Apple Co-Founder, Steve Wozniak was one of the major iNames praising the Lumia. I mentioned that Apple might just be following Siri’s recommendations, i.e. the best smartphone ever comment. Dave went on to say (or hint, I could be reading too much into this) that it won’t be for much longer (as another new Lumia will replace it perhaps?). I replied that I was due for an upgrade (in September) and I hoped to be amazed. Dave didn’t say much, but just said:
Perhaps it is worth being excited about? Or is it just Dave’s enthusiastic personality (he has to be as he’s training up all the other peeps in the UK to showcase new Lumias). Last year we had a story about Dave (who was unknown to me then) saying the new Lumias would ‘blow our socks off’. Well perhaps he was right in terms of design. Back then, June 16th 2011, the Nokia N9 was not yet announced. Dave may have seen the 800 first and as you all know, the first reactions people had to the N9 was to ‘blow our socks off’ right? So he’s correct on that regard. Dave also hinted about the upcoming MeeGo device as being market disrupting. No one had heard of swipe UI, nor seen it. Only hints from Marko Ahtisaari. Come June 21st 2011, it was something completely new and innovative, no? Something actually market disrupting , with seasoned Nokia haters worshiping the design and the new gesture based swipe interaction. I’m glad that Dave’s excited about the upcoming new Lumias. He hasn’t mentioned that specifically, but at a stretch and dot connecting, that’s what it is. It might seem obvious that staff will praise their products. True. Some on twitter that forget that end up finding new jobs, aka, the Microsoft guy who rated the new Nokia’s 8/10. So, a Nokia Lumia 900 successor soon (‘not much longer’). Something worth getting excited about. Something that will come to the UK (and not wait for AT&T exclusivity perhaps?). At the very least, more confirmation from a Nokia source of new Lumias appearing. It might seem obvious now but only weeks ago there were also rumours circulating that we won’t even see a new Lumia this year. The question everyone wants to know, although we all know the answer is no but like to grasp at some last threads of hope, will we see PureView Lumia this year in some form.
Dave obviously can’t reply to that kind of question. Nokia’s own twitter account has been saying keep eyes and ears open – as vague as possible to questions on Lumia PureView. As mentioned before, Nokia’s Stephen Elop may already be playing around with PureView Lumias – reason? Some doubters do not think Elop would praise a Symbian powered PureView device. Elop specifically mentioned ‘PureView Technology’ as the one replacing his SLR. |
Should Nokia’s PureView fear the Android powered point and shoot cameras? Posted: 26 Aug 2012 08:22 AM PDT It’s not the first time we’ve heard about an Android powered zoom capable pocket camera, and it probably won’t be the last. You may have seen Nikon’s S800c, quite a chunky little monkey because it’s not an Android phone but an Android camera. Well, camera quality wise PureView has already been besting the top high end point and shoots and taking swipes at DSLRs, so maybe not. Certainly not on Rich Recording. But if the public become interested, they might find it more attractive to go down the Android camera route than the relatively unknown (damn you Nokia for not advertising PureView enough/at all) Nokia PureView. Plus the Coolpix thing above is only around 350USD (I don’t think it’s a phone though). 16MP, 10X optical zoom. Nikon’s image stabilisation with VGA 240FPS mode. Not bad. Not so sure about the rest of the Android experience on this one.
by hkdcfever Something a little more scary perhaps is a SGSIII equivalent Samsung pocket cam. Canon might join the boat too. Nokia’s got to hurry and get PureView out to more places! Bring us new PureView devices please! ASAP! |
Concept, Leak, Fake? Nokia Lumia WP8 with Quadcore? Posted: 26 Aug 2012 07:53 AM PDT
I wouldn’t put too much into this. I got a tweet from Antero saying:
That leads to the image below on what looks like a very interesting, blocky looking almost Bang and Olufsen like phone. The tweet is said very matter-of-factly, with no other tweets mentioning anything related to this or mobile. Like a spammer account. But what would they be doing with this picture? Perhaps it’s already in the public domain for a while but I’ve not seen it before.
A little closer. What’s that at the top? I’m not quite sure about this having quadcore. It’s nice but it’s very unlike Nokia. Cheers Antero for the tip! |
Weekend lol: Nokia Facebook funny pics (and name that Nokia) Posted: 26 Aug 2012 07:01 AM PDT
I didn’t know I could use the MNB facebook account as an actual regular user account, so it was cool to see a feed of the different Nokia facebooks around the world we clicked ‘like’ on. Here are some funny Nokia pictures they’ve been sharing. This is from the official Nokia Facebook. Nokia France/Norway/Nokia Nokia Philippines. Can you name this Nokia? Not from facebook but related – Nokia Connects (now NokConv) has a few: |
Collection: Nokia 808 PureView, Fireworks (Rich Recording test) Posted: 26 Aug 2012 06:42 AM PDT Here’s a video of some FireWorks recorded by a Nokia 808 PureView. It absolutely excels in this scene. Low light, quick to manage exposures, brilliant accurate colours, PureView zooming, stellar rich recording and all in a small package that’s easy to hold and have with you at all times because it’s also your phone! These guys are super lucky to have a 808 PureView to record with.
The last video shows off some drum playing. I thought it looked nice to mash the two with YouTube doubler – FireWorks and music celebrations. Actually whilst looking for 808 fireworks video there are plenty that have their own music and look great on their own. ____ For a bit of comparison on just how good this actually is, here’s a random BlackBerry: My ears hurt. HTC OneX Lumia 710 This surprised me. Not bad. No 808 though. |
Nokia bringing Lumia to Japan? Posted: 26 Aug 2012 02:59 AM PDT Not quite sure what this is indicating. It appears to list devices coming soon to Japan on NTT DoCoMo.
Windows Phone is already geared up for the Japanese language, with Fujitsu’s almost Lumia like colourfulness heading Windows Phone for Japan. Here’s an advert from Japanese carrier KDDI for the Fujitsu phone. Cheers Dave² for the tip! |
