Did We Just Spot The “Lumia Phi”? Nokia’s First Phablet

Posted: 07 Aug 2012 01:35 PM PDT

nokiaphi

Earlier today we posted what seemed to be a prototype WP8 by Nokia that somehow walked out the factory doors, as you can see in the image above the leaked device is much larger than the Lumia 900, almost 5 inches. Is this a Galaxy note competitor? Personally I hated the note when I first saw it, but now I genuinely want one!

The supposed specs of the Nokia Phi are:

  • Single Body Polycarobante
  • Qualcomm Dual Core CPU
  • LTE
  • NFC
  • Curved Screen
  • Extrernal SD card

Those specs look quite promising for a Lumia 900 successor, hopefully it’ll carry a big enough  battery to support all that power.

*Note- I think it’s safe to assume that this WONT be carrying any pureview tech considering the size of the device, so at least we can look forward to one high-end device soon.

Lumiappaday #266: Connect 4 demoed on the Nokia Lumia 900

Posted: 07 Aug 2012 12:27 PM PDT

You might have played Connect 4 as a kid and it might just be me who hasn’t grown up but I still find it a lot of fun. In this free game, you can play against the phone or play against real people online. There’s even a chat function as well as a view of the global leaderboards.

There are so many versions available at marketplace, I actually wasn’t sure which one it was. The developer is SilverSprings and we’ll definitely be checking out more of their apps.

Here’s a demo on the Nokia N97: http://mynokiablog.com/2009/07/30/free-game-connect4-for-the-nokia-n97-5800-samsung-i8910-and-other-s60-5th-edition/

Wow, it seems offscreen who made the N97 version also have one for Lumia.

Nokia 808 PureView on TheVerge’s “phones I need in my life” list

Posted: 07 Aug 2012 06:35 AM PDT

Well, not quite the whole TheVerge team, just Aaron. He’s gone and pre-ordered the Nokia 808 PureView as it is on his list of ‘phones I need in my life’. Vlad Savov wasn’t too keen on the idea – well not on the Symbian part which is integral to the phone right now.

Regardless of that, why does Aaron want the 808 so bad?

I love phones that are different. I love phones that put everything into doing one thing, and doing it well, whether it be a novel form factor, new technology, laser-etched Batman logo, or an insane 41-megapixel camera. I love it when a company spends millions to do the tech equivalent of a commenter writing “FIRST” at the end of a news article. Every company that’s made one of these “FIRST” devices (Haier excluded) has earned my respect, money, and usually, a ton of market success down the road. Without these leaps of faith, technology wouldn’t advance….

http://www.theverge.com/2012/8/2/3177157/this-is-my-next-nokia-808-pureview

…The 808 offers a simply stunning camera, and I want very little else from it. Its PureView sensor is the first of its kind and, although Nokia claims it's bringing the technology to Windows Phone 8, I believe we're unlikely to ever see it in such magnificent form….

…So, while you’re ridiculing my legendary, memorable, downright ballsy inch-thick Symbian phone, I'll be capturing your callous taunts in pixel-perfect clarity, before watching my phone crash as I attempt to share a video to Twitter.

This was about 5 days ago. Since then, unfortunately Aaron’s pre-order got cancelled by the retailer :/.

Say what you like against the Nokia 808 PureView, but this phone knows its niche and it is simply the best thing money can buy on that regard and will be unmatched for quite some time.

Nokia Nostalgia: Nokia 7700 unreleased touch screen smartphone from 2003!

Posted: 07 Aug 2012 03:32 AM PDT

I’ve got a few pics of some Nokia classics to share in the run up to Nokia World. They’re in no particular order.

The first one we’re looking at is a touch screen multimedia phone from Nokia, announced in 2003 but it never made it to market.

This is a Symbian phone, already with a 630×320 screen, but with a very different Series 90 UI.

I’ve never seen one of these in real life before so I’m not sure if the back is normally this thick or if that’s the DVB-H TV extension.

This phone would have been another ‘iconic’ side talking Taco phone like the n-gage and harks back to the days of daring Nokia designs.

In comparison to the Nokia Lumia 900.

Here’s some videos of it in action. Note, this 7700 in photos wasn’t working but it’s quite annoying to see it already looks better than S60V5.
