Lumiappaday #270: Crackle demoed on the Nokia Lumia 900 (Free Movies) Posted: 11 Aug 2012 01:31 PM PDT I just came across this app a few minutes ago and it’s quite brilliant. You might have seen Crackle on YouTube before bringing you free films/tv shows. Not just old films/tv shows not worth watching but actually some pretty decent ones. Just download the app, sign in/create an account (free) and begin watching movies or TV shows for free and it’s legit. Streams are pretty decent quality. You can pin to your start screen and resume playback at any time. #270) Crackle

New Nokia 808 PureView Swagbag gallery – by Nokia 808 PureView Posted: 11 Aug 2012 06:20 AM PDT
Nokia fans love their swag bag, particularly the latest swagbags for the Nokia 808 PureView. Here’s a gallery from Sam showing this morning’s 808 swagbag contents in detail. Roll up HDMI Cheers Sam for the tip! |
Nokia 311 launched in India for Rs. 7139 (now at Rs. 6559) Posted: 11 Aug 2012 06:01 AM PDT
Fone Arena reports that the hot Nokia Asha 311 (full touch, capacitive S40) is available for Rs. 7139. By direct conversion it’s about 129USD or 82GBP. It seems looking at India Times Shop, the price has already gone down to 6559 INR (118USD/75GBP)

Weekend Watch: Some ancient (and surprisingly good) Nokia TV adverts Posted: 11 Aug 2012 03:12 AM PDT These randomly ancient Nokia adverts popped up this morning on my YouTube feed (at time of writing, a few days ago). I didn’t pay attention to what was going on at first. I was more taken aback by how old these adverts were. But they’re surprisingly clever. Do we have anyone here who might have seen these adverts when they aired live? Mobira Talkman. 1984. I think we have some pics to share soon of this. Possibly shot in the 80s. It looks like the Karate Kid should pop up some time here. Now this is a phone that can fit in your car. The advert, though cheesy, shows a situation where two business guys in a car, one with a Nokia and one without, need to make a phone call. Prior to the days of course of not being allowed to phone whilst driving. The guy without a Nokia leaves his car at the traffic lights to make a call at the phone booth and is left stranded when the lights go green again. The Nokia guy gets to be smug (almost unlikable) as he has a phone he can use in his car. The message is at least clear, and would be a little clearer with a voice over. Advert for Nokia 1101.
This is my favourite of the three. Is this an actual Nokia original advert? Ignoring the arty video work, listen to the voice over. That sounds like what Apple adverts sound like now. (well the iOS related ones, not the stupid AppleGeniusforbraindeadmacusers ads). The 8110 was released in 1996.
Put yourself into any single Apple keynote about the iPhone with creepy Forstall or Sir Ive. That’s how they talk about their products. That’s how they convey the attention they put in their products so consumers can appreciate that too. I’m amazed Nokia were doing this kind of thing but then decided to go and continue with pursuing mostly meaningless adverts. Update: Some more ancient adverts since I forgot about publishing this from drafts: Check out Nokia explaining the ‘navi key’. Oh the infra-red data connection. 9600 bits per second!! 3110 New concepts, well explained. This is why Nokia was famous for having a simple to understand UI. For new Nokia fans, who’d have thought that, huh?

AT&T and Rogers: 8779 update for Lumia 900 Posted: 11 Aug 2012 02:26 AM PDT I had looked at this earlier in the week, but due to a lack of time, wasn’t able to cover it until now. Apologies. Nokia is preparing the 8779 Tango update for Lumia 900 owners in North America (AT&T & Rogers branded). Navifirm confirms the update, so the roll out should be just around the corner. Nokia’s servers are displaying the updates as 2175.2301.8779.12222 for Rogers and 2175.2301.8779.12223 for AT&T. This is good news for the North American Lumia 900 owners who seem to be long overdue for the update. Cheers if anyone tipped it. |
Weekend Read: 4 Million Euros for Qt? Posted: 11 Aug 2012 02:21 AM PDT Earlier in the week, we heard that Digia had aquired the rest of Qt from Nokia. No price was known but the ballpark figure available is about 4 Million.
I am not sure about the full nature of the transaction and whether it is just 4 million. Reuters reports the same, and notes the original 150m purchase of TrollTech (Qt) back in 2008.
Some context from TheVerge who points out this is not a ‘like for like’ deal.
Cheers Joni for the tip! |
Blanca Juti leaves Nokia, Jussi Nevanlinna now heading marketing for future Asha Posted: 11 Aug 2012 02:12 AM PDT According to Jussi Mäkinen, the energetic Blanca Juti (VP Marketing of Mobile Phones) has left Nokia, with Jussi Nevanlinna, Senior Director, Global Head of Developer Product Marketing now heading up the marketing for future Asha. Blanca famously spiced up Nokia World 2011 with a dance to introduce the new youthful Asha series, as well as putting on an internal show for the launch of the new full Asha Touch. If you have not heard of Jussi Nevanlinna before, here’s a video of Jussi at Nokia World 2011. Don’t mix him up with the identically named Finnish poker player. Cheers jiipee for the tip! |
Super cool new Nokia 808 PureView swagbag for filming up and coming UK band, Midnight Bonfires Posted: 11 Aug 2012 02:00 AM PDT
You guys loved the first Nokia 808 PureView swagbag. Check this one out. If you can’t make it out, there’s a sweet looking camera bag, a Hama tripod, a retractable HDMI cable (I’ve not seen this accessory before from Nokia), portable charger, connector for tripod and the Nokia 808 PureView itself. Who’s it from? What’s it for? This is from the Nokia Connects peeps. They sent it over to Sam from Midnight Bonfires to film their music video which Nokia Connects will come down and film too. My housemate has been wanting to film a music video too for his side project, I might ask for the same some time :p. The band has had to suffer “generic”/non-808 recording devices which will not capture enough light and more importantly, the sound. They should enjoy the large sensor from the 808 as well as Rich Recording which outdoes every competition’s built in microphone. “GENERIC” RECORDING DEVICE CLIP What it was supposed to sound like. Not 808 either.: I’m not sure if they’ll be using PureView’s audio for the music video (normally it’s just video over a studio recording). I’ll let Sam explain their project more below:

Nokia: Whatsapp for Windows phone to “be available within 48 hours” Posted: 11 Aug 2012 01:23 AM PDT A few days back there was an unannounced removal of WhatsApp for Windows phone from the Marketplace. Nokia Netherlands has confirmed that the sudden disappearance was due to a committed upgrade to a newer version and removing bugs and issues. When WhatsApp initially disappeared from the Marketplace, the team clarified:
According to Nokia new version should be available in Marketplace within 48 hours. Nokia assures that this information is totally correct as its based on internal backgrounds. We haven't received the confirmation from WhatsApp yet, but it sounds like good news for Windows Phone users. Michael: There are also rumours floating around that a huge update is coming for WP8. The removal may be related to that. Cheers Upamdebnath and AkhilRaj. |
