Here’s an advert for the surprisingly popular Nokia Asha 305. I can sort of understand the joke but if someone could elaborate on it a bit more that would be appreciated.

Second Nokia WP8 Front Frame Leaked

Posted: 16 Aug 2012 09:03 AM PDT

WP Central

Earlier this week we saw the first physical evidence of the upcoming range of WP8, in the form of a leaked front screen/Bezzel. Today comes a second different frame that’s been leaked out of the factory, this one carries the Proto.nokia.com branding on it which is customary for all Nokia prototypes. Also note the fact that the Nokia Branding is on the Right side of the screen rather than centered, possibly pointing to a carrier branding on the complementary side- as is with the Lumia 900 on At&t?

The screen measures 4″ according to the source, making it slightly smaller than the previous leak we saw (4.3″). It’s speculated that neither this device nor the previous leak are the successors to the current Lumia design, that spot is apparently taken by the yet to be seen “Nokia Phi”. I find the large amount of bezzel at the bottom of the screen quite disturbing, hopefully it matches/compliments the overall device design and doesn’t stick out like a sore thumb.

Nokia Connects to become part of Conversations by Nokia

Posted: 16 Aug 2012 04:38 AM PDT

Just read this email from Paul. As you may or may not remember, 1000 Heads’ WOMWorld changed to Nokia Connects back in October last year. Now there’s going to be another change as Nokia Connects joins Conversations by Nokia as one voice, one community. The same peeps will still be working on the new Nokia Connects.

Hey there!

Boy, have we got some exciting news for you! Nokia Connects is transforming, and we wanted you to know before the rest of the world.

As of Monday, Nokia Connects will become a part of Conversations by Nokia. It will continue to exist in much the same form, but the two blogs will become a single entity under the Conversations banner and URL.

We're thrilled to be able to offer you a one stop shop to get up to speed with all goings-on at Nokia and learn about all the cool experiments and projects your peers are working on with us. The new, improved blog will be a place for you to connect with Nokia and with other fans and members of our community.

In terms of what's actually changing, we will be focusing more on celebrating the amazing stuff our community get up to with Nokia. We will be running more trials (head here if you want one!) – which will hopefully mean more amazing experiences, photos, videos and reviews for us to discuss and celebrate.

The same people will remain working on the new Nokia Connects, and we will be as active as ever on @Nokia_Connects Twitter, so please get in touch if you'd like to chat. Tom, Pierre and I will be your main men on there and on the blog.

We'll be announcing this to the world later today but we wanted to give you a heads up before we do. It's an exciting time for us, and we're sure you're going to love the new setup. As always, happy to hear your initial reactions and thoughts, and answer any queries you may have.

Thanks!

Paul

Nokia’s Chris Weber (@CWeberatNokia) warns Samsung, confirms Next generation of Lumia coming soon

Posted: 16 Aug 2012 12:41 AM PDT

Soon. Yay. Yet more confirmation that they’re coming soon. This doesn’t sound like just an announcement but availability as Samsung need not worry about new phones being announced but being on sale.

It will take a while of course for Lumia to get the same traction to actually be a threat, just as both Samsung and iPhone have steadily built up a following over the years were not an immediate threat to the giant Nokia.

There’s still plenty of room for everyone whilst the market grows.

@CWeberatNokia Samsung take note, next generation Lumia coming soon.#nokia

Hopefully this indicates that these new Lumias are also really good and something to take note of.

Update: Noticed in the comments, lordstar mentions ‘Note’ as a possible product equivalent by Nokia to Samsung’s Galaxy Note. Lumia Phablet? Erm yes please. *throws next upgrade plans on lumia phablet*. ha. Maybe, but maybe not.

Thanks Adnan for the tip!

PureView replaces Stephen Elop’s SLR. WSJ calls 808 Breathtaking – would replace iPhone with Lumia PureView.

Posted: 16 Aug 2012 12:16 AM PDT

Stephen Elop tweeted yesterday,

@WSJ calls Nokia 808 PureView "breathtaking" Couldn't agree more. Pureview technology has definitely replaced my SLR.http://on.wsj.com/P7pPK7

Darn twitter now fails to show user’s last tweets until you click ‘all’ so I didn’t see this yesterday.

Anyway, the post in question is this:

http://blogs.wsj.com/tech-europe/2012/08/13/review-nokia-808-pureview/

They’re very harsh in calling Symbian a 3 legged mangey dog. I totally disagree with the 808 feeling plasticky. If this feels plasticky, I wonder how they feel about 99% of the other inferiorly built phones out there. Maybe yes on the buttons. But the rest? Nope.

On the camera:

Normally I use an iPhone, and while the images are OK, you always feel you are compromising on quality. That is not the case with the 808. Using the macro setting, it was possible to see individual hairs on a grasshopper (see photo above). From glaring midday sun, to late evenings, the phone handled the lighting excellently.

The author, Ben Rooney, says a WP/Lumia PureView would be good enough to consider ditching his iPhone.

Well, unfortunately we won’t be seeing any Lumia PureViews any time ‘soon’.

Cheers Joni for the tip.

N9Appdate: Home Screen Settings V1.6

Posted: 15 Aug 2012 09:48 PM PDT

This one is quite out in the Store just yet, but the author has published over at TMO that V1.6 of Home Screen Settings is coming soon (pending Store Q&A & Translations). The update adds a feature I had wanted to implement and never got around to, as I didn’t know how. (Turns out the author told me in the comments from the last update :/ ).

Anyway, here is what he posted;

Home screen settings 1.6.0, currently pending translations (and then Store QA), will include the following features:

  • Icon shadows
  • Folder opacity
  • Custom operator name

Folder transparency can be seen in the screen shot below, and icon shadow is clearest in the one above. Both show the custom operator name.
