Motorola Calling Out Nokia, Holding Even on Sept. 5th; Calling it “Day’s Main Event” Posted: 17 Aug 2012 02:17 PM PDT It would seem the gloves are off, when it comes to Mobile OEMs competing against each other, first we had Chris Weber calling out Samsung to watch their backs. Now it seems Motorola have jumped in, attempting to steal some of Nokia’s thunder by holding an event the very same day the new Modified Nokia World is going down (Sept. 5th); with the invite claiming to be “the day’s main event”. I can’t seem to find the article but I recall either Samsung or HTC doing something similar a year or two ago (I think it was the launch of the Galaxy Nexus); regardless I hope Nokia have something in stock that will blow their minds. And more importantly I hope Elop or whoever is taking the stage is polishing up their speaking skills, I still haven’t forgotten NOT mentioning 1080p recording in the 808s launch. To get a better idea ofwhat to expect at Nokia’s event check out some of the leaks that have trickled out over the last couple of weeks- Hopefully we can expect something to satisfy all needs and cravings, from Pureview to Phablets (dare to dream of the two together?). Also note that the Motorola event is being shared by Verizon, can we expect a Verizon branded phone to be released by Nokia the same day? P.S.- Motorola event is expected to be for the Droid Razr HD |

Nokia Lumia 820 Windows Phone 8 leaked? (Update, no it isn’t) Posted: 17 Aug 2012 10:50 AM PDT There we go, it makes another appearance but now with a name. The Nokia Lumia 820. Hopefully it is this bright red and not just the camera making it look that way. The new Windows 8 logo is set at the bottom, similar design to the 900 just slightly slimmer. Is it me or does the flat screen seem to be raised, i.e. no raised edge like the 900? Source: WMPU Update: It’s just a photorealistic render by Jonas whom we’ve featured a few times in MyDreamNokia. Yeah he’s that good.

Post PureView: Graphene sensors and Trillion FPS cameras that can look around the corner Posted: 17 Aug 2012 10:44 AM PDT This is really two separate posts in one which I’m tying up together because they’re sort of related. What happens now after PureView? Well, the first direct story is actually something Nokia’s looking into. Graphene sensors. Graphene is regarded as the new miracle nano material, famously presented in the Nokia Morph concept. Check out BBC Click’s article on Graphene for more which showcases, Nokia Morph.
UnwiredView reports that Nokia have filed a patent for a graphene photo sensor. Staska explains this would perform better than equivalent CMOS sensors in low light, as well as being much slimmer. Think of that PureView bulge being just as powerful in a smaller package. Think again were Nokia to remain being daring and stick even more power into PureView. Finally it would apparently be cheaper to produce. This is something in the very distant future with regards to this camera femto tech being in a phone. Similarly, and onto our next story, the 1000FPS camera. Watch the TED presentation. They actually make note of the fact that imaging should switch from thinking about more megapixels is better (well it is if you do it the Nokia way) and focus on the next dimension of imaging. In this video you can see a pulse of photons on ‘video’ passing through a bottle of water. It’s quite amazing. To see a bullet played at the same speed, you’d be watching it for a whole year! What can you do with this? Plenty of things. In the video they explain how it could be used to see if fruit is ripe. Well, not the coolest application. What does seem even more amazing is how they can use this technology to ‘see’ around corners. They also envisioned this eventually arriving into phones, but again, quite far ahead into the future. Whilst I’m here, let me stick a third one we might have mentioned before. Lytro – lightfield camera where you can choose the focus point AFTER you’ve taken the photo. It’s a bit like those 38mp camera – you choose to zoom in AFTER Cheers all for the Graphene tip!

ACL for Jolla brings Android apps Posted: 17 Aug 2012 06:22 AM PDT
This was supposed to be one of the ‘levelers’ people were looking forward to in Nokia’s Meego devices. Whilst there were Qt apps, sadly these were MeeGo Qt apps only that were immediately compatible (no Symbian Qt) so very little in the way of the ‘all important -_-’ app numbers. ACL solves the App barrier by allowing Android apps to run on that particular OS. It sounds great but will it be great in practice? Here’s a demo on a MeeGo tablet. So on top of HTML5 and Qt apps, you’ve got the option for Android Apps. The OpenMobile site also mentions ACL for Windows. Source .3t.fi Cheers jiipee and Muerte for the tip |
My Dream Nokia #63: 41MP PureView twisty camera WP8/MeeGo Concept with 3x optical zoom. Posted: 17 Aug 2012 12:51 AM PDT This is the latest work by Edgar Mkrtchyan. It focuses more on the design rather than the dreamed up specifications. As you can see, it looks quite different from the standard smartphone. It’s inspired by the 3250/N90, models which were supposedly being relived in upcoming Nokias according to rumours. http://mynokiablog.com/2012/08/04/weekend-lol-nokia-lumia-x-twisty-camera-n-gage-thing/ BTW, Edgar wanted to ask the photoshop pros here a question:
It looks like a regular phone with some pretty decent specs. Nice fat battery, 41mp PureView with 3x optical zoom. That makes it about 9x zoom when recording 1080p or 18x zoom at 720p (optical x smart pureview zoom). You might think the camera bump is out of place. This could make for some really high quality self portraits/video blogs as you twist the camera around facing you as well as getting some nice shots of some extreme angles whilst the camera viewfinder is still parallel with your eyes.
