Motorola’s Patents Are Merely Worth $5.5 Billion, Compared to the $12.4 Billion Google Paid for Moto Posted: 26 Jul 2012 11:44 AM PDT The news of the summer of 2011 was certainly the Google buyout of Motorola, that set them back $12.4 billion. Now it appears that Moto actually has to offer merely $5.5 billion worth of patents and intelectual property. So, was it actually worth it for Google? Let’s find out in the following lines. First of all, this figure came up during a regulatory filing this Tuesday. The transaction was completed successfully in May, as the antitrust investigations were cleared. While Google said for a long time that they bought Moto for their patents, there was a piece of news last year, saying that the maker of the RAZR had sold its valuable patents long before the search engine giant bought them. Android OS is open for attacks and you already saw that, with Samsung and HTC being constantly sued by Apple. Microsoft also wants a piece of the Android pie, since it does make a few bucks with each model sold, but it may want more. This is why Google needed the company that invented the cellphone by its side. But at what cost? One cost is the slowing down of the Motorola Mobility rhythm. We were used to seeing them launch a few phones and tablets every once in a while, but in 2012 I can’t think of a single model that stands out, which is sad. Moto is clearly in transition now and hopefully they won’t become just another branch of Google… Related posts: |
Sony Starts Sending Out Invitations to Pre-IFA 2012 Event in Berlin Posted: 26 Jul 2012 10:48 AM PDT Sony just started sending out invitations to a pre-IFA 2012 event, a press conference that will take place on August 29th in Berlin. You just need an IFA press accreditation to have a look at the latest Sony Xperia smartphones, that will be announced there. Sony also promised an exclusive booth unveiling after the press conference, so you’ll see some exclusive handsets taking off. Members of the press will get cozy with the new smartphones. Among the models we may see we could find some of the Xperia phones that have been rumored over the past months. These include the entry level Sony ST26i Xperia J, the LT26ii Xperia SL, basically a remake of the Xperia S with an upgrade and the LT29i Hayabusa with a 13 megapixel camera and a 4.55 inch HD display. Finally, there’s also the Snapdragon S4-based Sony LT30i Mint, also with a HD display and a 13 megapixel camera. Not sure which model will actually make it, but all of them are interesting. After all Sony has the habit of announcing a bunch of phones at a time, not just a single model. Will we also see a new tablet? Related posts: |
Nokia Lumia 808 Pureview Unboxing – 41 Megapixel Cameraphone Taken Out of the Box (Video) Posted: 26 Jul 2012 06:39 AM PDT Nokia Lumia 808 Pureview is now the world’s most talked about cameraphone, with a 41 megapixel sensor and the highest end camera technology you can imagine. The device goes for $660 or around that amount on Amazon. Pureview came in the typical blue Nokia box and inside it has the usual manual, charger, headphones and USB cable. There are also some headphone plugs and among the manuals we find an NFC tag, shown in the video below. Nokia 808 PureView was launched in June and it measures 13.9 mm, so it’s pretty bulky. The device has a 4 inch ClearBlack AMOLED display with a 360 x 640 pixel resolution. The camera is a 41 megapixel shooter with both Xenon and LED flash, with the latter handling video capture. Carl Zeiss Optics and varied shooting modes are available, as shown in the unboxing video, that actually turned into a preview at some point. As you can see the back cover of the Nokia 808 is hard to remove, so you’ll have to fight it for a bit. I used a pair of scissors, but still I had a hard time. Under the hood there’s a microSIM and microSD card slot and the 1400 mAh battery. Inside the Pureview there’s a 1.3 GHz ARM 11 CPU. More details will come in the following days, as we review this baby. Related posts:

Sony LT30p Mint Already Reviewed, Benchmarked, Detailed Ahead of Launch Posted: 26 Jul 2012 04:29 AM PDT Sony is expected to reveal big time novelty in its press event ahead of IFA 2012 Berlin, but till then the leaks keep piling up. One of them includes the very premature review of the Sony LT30p Mint, that reached the folks of Mobile Review for a detailed analysis. We get benchmarks, tests, detailed images and more. This device will probably be announced on August 29th before IFA starts. Mint comes with a 4.3 inch 720p screen, a 1.5GHz dual core Snapdragon S4 CPU, 1GB of RAM and 16GB of storage. It also has a microSD card slot, microSIM, NFC and a sealed internal battery. At the back there’s a 13 megapixel camera capable of 1080p video capture. The device scores 5992 points in AnTuTu, that’s not quite impressive, but let’s blame on the fact it’s an early unit. I was impressed by the 60.1 FPS scored in NenaMark 2, though. It was also impressive in Vellamo, where it scored 2157 points, pretty close to the recently leaked benchmarks of the quad core Snapdragon CPU, so that counts for something. In Quadrant the Sony LT30p Mint was once again impressive with 4044 points, meaning it’s about 1000 points lower than the Galaxy S III, which is not that bad. LT30p has a bunch of new software features that include Small Apps, a function that allows you to see a list of apps on the standby screen. More customizations and details are found in the full review here. Related posts: |
Samsung Offers Special Edition Olympics 2012 Flip Cover for Galaxy S III Posted: 26 Jul 2012 01:58 AM PDT Tomorrow is the big day of the Olympics 2012 London debut and since Samsung is one of the main sponsors of the event, the Galaxy S III will be everywhere. Now there’s also a special accessory dedicated to event and meant for this 4.8 inch phone. I’m talking about a Special Edition Olympics Flip Cover for the handset, that’s shown below. The cover can be bought in the Samsung PIN stores in London and there are two of these stores at the Olympics location. Also, know that there’s an Olympics Limited Edition Galaxy S III model, that was unveiled in Taiwan a while ago. As you can see, the cover shows you touristic aspects of London, the Olympic circles and… that’s about it. There’s a certain childish and doodle-style approach to the cartoon at the back of the flip cover, but some people really dig that. Expect more such items to appear over the following days, including cases, phones, tablets, cradles, speakers, other covers and much more. I’m afraid to even imagine how much Samsung invested into the Olympics, but at least it’s a world famous sporting event, so there’s nothing bad about that. I wonder how pleased the athletes will be with receiving a Galaxy S III… Related posts: |
HTC One X+ Gets Upgraded Tegra 3 CPU, Coming to T-Mobile Posted: 26 Jul 2012 01:41 AM PDT A recently leaked T-Mobile roadmap from early this month unveiled a mystery HTC handset, the Era 42. Couple that with the other recent leaks showing a mystery Tegra 3 1.7 GHz device from HTC being benchmarked and we have a decent scoop right here. Now the Era 42 turns out to be HTC One X+ in fact. This is a HTC One X version with an upgraded CPU, coming to T-Mobile in the following weeks most likely. One X usually features a 1.5 GHz quad core Nvidia Tegra 3 processor and this bump in clock speed can be associated with the new Tegra 3+ SoC. Nvidia detailed the chips before and they were set to arrive in the middle of this year. This opens up the future series of Tegra chips, like Wayne and Grey, that will finally bring LTE using an Icera modem. Let me remind you that Nvidia bought Icera in order to get its own connectivity chipsets and not be forced out of the market by Qualcomm and their solutions, that fit well LTE markets. If the leaked roadmap is for real, we’re to expect the launch of the HTC One X+ on T-Mobile on September 26th. Related posts: |
