Forbes: “Finland’s Jolla Will Be The Ferrari Of The Smartphone World” Posted: 21 Jul 2012 09:58 AM PDT AAS’ Ewan Spence, and also of Forbes writes
Precisely in what context will it be Ferarri? A highly desirable aspirational brand? Maybe. Ewan writes that the smartphone market is focused on volume. Ferrari ‘only’ sell about 10,000 cars (though very expensive) and is still a success.
Ewan believes that Jolla could be the leading ’boutique’ smartphone manufacturers in 2013. Instead of going for volume, Jolla can target high end that demands a high price. (Imagine the no longer Nokia-owned Vertu decides to partner with Jolla :p. I think that might put it out of too many people’s pockets). Cheers outdated os for the tip! |
Lumiappaday #249: Airbus demoed on the Nokia Lumia 900 Posted: 21 Jul 2012 09:48 AM PDT This app is all about Airbus planes. As a kid I absolutely adored planes (Boeing 747!) and still somewhat deeply fascinated by them when I’m travelling by air. This app, Airbus, presents the Airbus fleet quite nicely, providing a wide range of information on each Airbus model. #249) Airbus
Developer Blurb: The Airbus Family Figures provides an overview of the Airbus product line. It covers each model in the five different product families in a quick-look format showing dimensions, weights, powerplants, payloads and ranges. Welcome to the Airbus Family – New Standards. What the Hell Nokia! Kicking Out Symbian Developers? Posted: 21 Jul 2012 06:03 AM PDT It’s quite possible I’m jumping to conclusions without knowing the full story right now, but so far this is sounding pretty crazy; my twitter feed is abuzz lamenting the loss of probably Symbians greatest developer “@janole” the creator of Gravity- the best twitter client ever. Apparently Nokia have “kicked him out of their dev program” for as far as I could gather since he’s not planning on developing for WP. I would love to see a gravity for WP but not at the price of losing the greatest Symbian app ever, as most of you know I strongly believe in the WP strategy, but this is DEFINITELY not the way to go through with it. It’s quite possible there’s more to the story we don’t know but at the current time this is reeking of insanity. Not cool Nokia, not cool…

Nokia Drive 3.0 Update Live Now Posted: 21 Jul 2012 03:19 AM PDT The latest update to the already feature filled Nokia service for WP “Nokia Drive” just hit version 3.0 bringing some pretty cool features such as:
Worth noting that the features seen above are what Nokia showcased at the WP summit and promised to bring to the current devices, if my count is correct they’ve delivered the “play to” app, the camera extensions to some markets and now Maps 3.0; leaving only the “data counter” and the promised Zynga games to be released hopefully soon. EDIT: It would seem that another feature added is the ability to set favorites “as a destination” as well as saving a favorite from the drive screen itself; which is something I’ve been asking for for months, Yay! |
Weekend Read: Nokia’s Bridge Programme Posted: 21 Jul 2012 02:50 AM PDT
We heard about Nokia’s Bridge programme a lot when Jolla was announced. What exactly is it? AAS has an insightful article below that shows Nokia taking responsibilities for employees who have lost their job due to Nokia’s strategy changes. It’s interesting to learn that over 300 companies are being supported through this programme, Jolla amongst them.
Looking at the comments section, unfortunately it seems not all employees are eligible.

BGR: “Lumias outshipped iPhone, Samsung Android phones through first three quarters” Posted: 21 Jul 2012 02:43 AM PDT Don’t think too much into the significance of this report currently going around the web, as nice as it looks and all. It shows that comparisons of first three quarters of Nokia lumia, iPhone and Samsung Androids. Interestingly (and more worryingly if it didn’t happen) there are more Lumias in the first three quarters than iPhone. With an increase in overall market size, you would expect that to happen (though cannot take that for granted either). What surprised me more is that Samsung Droid did not exceed the older iPhone. The best this study can show is that currently, the Lumia line is performing reasonably well. Not amazing, not terrible, just good enough for now. Source: Strategy Analytics Cheers Janne for the tip!
