Lumiappaday #240: FlashVideo for WP7 demoed on the Nokia Lumia 900

Posted: 12 Jul 2012 12:55 PM PDT

This is an app called “Flashvideo for WP7″ and from the name  you can guess that it allows you to play flash videos on your Nokia Lumia.

It’s a little pricey at $4.99/£3.99 but if watching flash videos on mobile is important to you then you might want to take a look at this app. The guy who made this says he’s a student and he’ll be trying to do at least monthly updates. A trial is available so you can see if your favourite flash video sites will work on your phone.

The ones I tried do so I picked it up. When there’s a link to a flash video, press the scan button and the video player will start. It will buffer and play (or even resume where you were last). You can even download these videos so you can watch them later at your own time.

I’ve had this app as a trial on my 800 for a while but it didn’t work the first time I tried it and had ignored it up until now. As you can see in the video it streams high quality stuff quite well. The 900′s screen is pretty nice for viewing videos.

Before you ask, YES even those sites work. Tested it. For science.

Video: Nokia Belle “Upload to SkyDrive” demoed on Nokia 808

Posted: 12 Jul 2012 10:11 AM PDT

Yesterday we posted about a new update released for Nokia Belle devices that enables auto-uploads of photos to Skydrive, here’s a quick demo I shot last night showing how the app works:

Couple notes about the app itself:

  • Unfortunately the update doesn’t bring an option to share selected photos from the gallery (under share in the galley the only two options are facebook and Flickr)
  • The app runs silently in the background and seems quite stable
  • It’s a very much welcome feature to Symbians limited sharing capabilities ever since pixelpipe was removed from the store/support was dropped.

Official Twitter app Released for S40 Mobiles, Nokia Belle Looks in Envy

Posted: 12 Jul 2012 09:48 AM PDT

Rejoice! Finally Twitter has officially decided to support one of Nokias OSes, although not the one I’d prefer; earlier today Twitter released its official app for S40 devices which seems to simply be a refined version of the mobile twitter. Unfortunately Nokia Belle devices are still left out in the cold from any Official love; the only real twitter app for them is Gravity, because as I love to point out Nokia Social is a JOKE! The app doesn’t even start if there isn’t a sim card in the phone, why would I need a sim card to tell people what movie I’m watching!

Have Any Questions For Jolla Mobile? Get Us to Ask them!

Posted: 12 Jul 2012 09:37 AM PDT

Quick post y’all, Michael emailed me to post about this since his internet is kinda sucky as he’s spelunking across Europe; anyways-

I was wondering, can you post up asking if anyone has questions for Jolla Mobile? I have managed to get an interview with them, and want to know what people want to know.

Basically if you have anything you’d like to know from JM about their plans, products, startup, or just want to ask how the weather is over there let us know down in the comments section below, or mention Michael on Twitter @MFaroTusino

Cheers :)

Nokia Music Trending on Twitter?

Posted: 12 Jul 2012 08:48 AM PDT

Why? I don’t know. It’s there along with AT&T and the BlackBerry Playbook experience.

Must be a slow day on twitter? Nothing yet on NokConv to suggest anything about Nokia Music.

Update: It’s just personalised trending twitter topics. Well that sucks. Turned that off.

Nice of @Nokia to explain :)

Press Release: Nokia to publish second quarter 2012 results on July 19, 2012

Posted: 12 Jul 2012 03:24 AM PDT

Nokia’s giving a heads up that their Q2 2012 results will be available in a weeks time. They’ve already previously warned about Q2 being the same or worse prior to Q1 results so bad news won’t really be new news.

Numbers we’ll be interested in:

  • Smart devices sales
  • mobile phone sales
  • Symbian Sales
  • Lumia sales
  • What’s going on at NSN
  • What’s going on at NAVTEQ
  • Any area of Nokia in profit
  • Other things I might have forgotten

Espoo, Finland – Nokia will publish its second quarter 2012 results on Thursday, July 19, 2012 at approximately 1pm Finnish time (CET+1). The press release will be available on the Nokia website immediately after publication.

Nokia’s analyst conference call will begin at 3pm Finnish time. A webcast of the conference call will be available athttp://investors.nokia.com. Media representatives wishing to listen in may call +1 706 634 5012, conference ID 95899958.

Nokia publishes in stock exchange releases a summary of its interim reports only. The stock exchange releases include a quarter-specific link to the complete interim reports with tables in PDF-format. The complete second quarter 2012 interim report with tables will be available at http://www.results.nokia.com/results/Nokia_results2012Q2e.pdf. FOSS Patents explains the news on Nokia, RIM, Nexus 7, HTC patent drama

Posted: 12 Jul 2012 02:57 AM PDT

I haven’t been paying attention to the legal side of Nokia news regarding who Nokia is suing or who is suing Nokia. Mostly because I don’t know enough about the situation to talk about it. In fact, because of that, I think I’ve missed quite a bit so here’s a heads up from Florian Mueller and the FOSS Patents blog.

Most recently hitting the headlines – Nokia suing RIM.

Also covered in Engadget, Nokia are suing RIM for the following three patents:

  1. EP1474750 on a “method and system for storing and transferring multimedia tags”

Nokia is also asserting this one against HTC in Mannheim.

  2. EP08040461 on a “method and apparatus for updating the software of a mobile terminal using the air interface”
  3. EP1148681 on a “method for transferring resource information”

http://www.fosspatents.com/2012/07/nokia-hits-rim-with-three-more-patents.html

Some kind of drama going on between HTC and Nokia.

Nokia and the Google Nexus 7 tablet

This is that remarkable tablet – apparently each sold makes a loss but that doesn’t matter because that’s not google’s way of making money. They’d ideally be giving all this for free because they capture the market through ads from their services. Anyway that’s not what they’ve said, it’s just what I’ve garnered reading posts and comments about the tablet.

Specifically the Nokia related situation is that apparently, neither ASUS (maker of this tablet) and Google (Android) have licensed under Nokia’s patent portfolio.  I think I missed precisely what patents were in question but Florian says, “It looks like Google and ASUS still have some homework to do”

http://www.fosspatents.com/2012/06/googles-new-nexus-7-tablet-apparently.html

Another one I wasn’t even aware of or my amnesia is on replay:

One time Apple payment to Nokia and then some on going royalties.

http://www.fosspatents.com/2011/06/apple-and-nokia-settle-patent-dispute.html

Anyone know how much Nokia is getting in terms of royalties? I’ve heard rumours but nothing substantial.

Cheers all for the tip.

Interview with Jolla Mobile CEO, Jussi Hurmola (audio and full transcript)

Posted: 12 Jul 2012 01:32 AM PDT

Hey folks. IntoMobile had an interview with the CEO of Jolla Mobile and shared the transcript as well as the audio.

http://www.intomobile.com/2012/07/11/interview-jussi-hurmola-ceo-jollamobile-audio-and-text-available/

Audio >> CLICKY

  • 50 employees, hiring 5 a week, aim of 100 by end of the year
  • Confirmation again of a new phone by this year
  • New phone will have developer mode. Ready for mass consumers but friendly for developers two. Jussi says this is where TechCrunch got their ’2 devices’ from.
  • Will not commit to products for 2013 yet until they see how this one does (in 2012).
  • Currently in negotiation phase with chipset vendors , ODM support
  • Close to being able to communicate about the partners they’re using.
  • Not using SWIPE as that belongs to Nokia. As mentioned before, they will have a new UI.
  • Been going to China every month for about a year

Why not just put custom UI on Droid? –

  • We want to lead in technology and lead in UI, that's our business. We don't want to copy them.’
  • Contrary to reports, Nokia has not ‘gifted’ them with IPR. Perhaps they licensed it/purchased it?
  • MeeGo is NOT dead

Apps, how will they deal with having no apps?

  • “ I believe that we have an answer for this, and I understand that you can not seriously sell a smartphone if you don't have a sufficient application offering, but I can't tell you what our plan is until we announce our product.” Hmm.
Stefan makes an interesting comparison:
  • Are you familiar with the Apple story around Steve Jobs, how he got kicked out, started his own company called NeXT, and then Apple bought NeXT and used their software to bring Apple back to life? If the Windows Phone plan goes to complete shit, and Nokia don't sell any, would you be open to getting acquired by your former employer?

Stefan quotes an interesting comment by Jolla from WSJ
  • With all respect to Apple's operating system and Android, the market is ready for something new. As I see it, there are user segments that have been left unserved
Jussi says these user elements will become clear when they launch their products.
Here’s another Jolla article to check out whilst you’re at this post. It’s the TechCrunch article that Stefan references a lot:
Thanks ssdh for the tip!

An ex Nokian addresses invalid Nokia statements – cleaning out the FUD machine.

Posted: 12 Jul 2012 01:32 AM PDT

I enjoyed Ahonen’s analysis of the mobile market until it seemed that he turned a little sour. It wasn’t because he was now simply against the Nokia that I love. It was because in my opinion, he was using facts and numbers but twisting them to get the outcome on his new agenda. Conclusions can often be completely different based on the same identical correct set of events. For example, this:

http://mynokiablog.com/2012/05/04/mnb-reader-generated-fact-checking-what-was-said-at-nokia-agm/

And it gets worse when malformed conclusions are reported as unquestioned gospel.

It’s difficult to counter for many reasons. Firstly, if you try and do so directly on his blog, criticisms will be removed.  Secondly, because it’s hard to keep up with those tends of thousand of word posts to begin with. It wouldn’t be fair to Ahonen not to read his full post and get my conclusion based on its entirety. But the sheer size and frequency of large blog posts makes this a rather time consuming task, and as you know, I’m already very much limited on time with what I do on this hobby blog and real life.

Further more, it’s just drama I’d rather avoid (relentless negativity and confrontation) plus feeling of futility that you cannot separate a determined man from his agenda.

Actually, I wasn’t even going to highlight this but I keep getting mails to do so. Plus, what with all the Nokia bashing, it may be good to have a different perspective on things.

I have no idea who this person is, or why we should be paying any more attention to him than Ahonen. For some reason they’ve set up a blog which aims to precisely do what I wanted to do but no longer have the energy or desire to do so: go through Ahonen’s pieces to point out anomalies, inconsistencies, misinformation etc.

http://dominiescommunicate.wordpress.com/about/

The author is also Ex Nokian, a Finnish ex Nokia guy as indicated by his Finnish tweets (though he could be of any nationality and a Finnish speaker). He’s an engineer in fact. His aim is to address invalid statements by Ahonen. Without taking this ExNokian’s own words for gospel either, feel free to go through his rebuttals should they also be erroneous.

http://dominiescommunicate.wordpress.com/2012/07/09/china-math-from-tomi-ahonen-feat-cn/

http://dominiescommunicate.wordpress.com/2012/06/

http://dominiescommunicate.wordpress.com/2012/06/25/elop-effect-did-not-crash-nokia-yes-this-is-true/

Ahonen is aware of this guy. He brands ‘ex Nokian’ as a troll, making sure no one pays attention by defacing Ex Nokian’s character as someone who just wants traffic for their blog, using Ahonen’s name to get exposure. Has he got a personal beef with Ahonen? Is Ex Nokian’s conclusions about Ahonen also equally clouded? See for yourself in the many posts he’s done (should you have the time to do so). Their blog is relatively new, with archives from June 2012.

Ahonen says “Ex Nokian” is untrustworthy because he blogs anonymously.

There are many reasons to blog anonymously/under a pseudonym etc. I wouldn’t say that makes anyone instantly untrustworthy. Their actions and content under that anonymity will indicate if they are or aren’t trustworthy. Or is the value of a comment only worth who says it in the first place, not what is actually being said?

Ex Nokian explains here: http://dominiescommunicate.wordpress.com/about/who-is-anonymous-ex-nokian/

Note, unlike Ahonen, here we do NOT remove comments of any sort other than spam. Share your opinion, but do so maturely. Keep personal attacks to a zero. Stay relevant to the topic. Address the topic of conversation not the character of the person you’re discussing it with.

Thanks everyone for the tip.
