Lumia more popular search term than Windows Phone, (Same with Nokia vs Apple)

Posted: 06 Jul 2012 07:16 AM PDT

I thought I already wrote up this post to be scheduled but it seems not. Anyway, this story is about how web searches for Lumia had been eclipsing Windows Phone since pretty much the moment Nokia Lumia was announced.

As much as some die hards Windows Phone fan may want to deny it, people pay attention to Windows Phone because of Nokia and Nokia essentially rescued Windows Phone from certain oblivion (at their own expense) to which they are now pretty much fused in terms of destiny.

The use of a name in a Nokia line up was one of the earliest things I ranted about. On top of a brand name you can build a reputation

http://mynokiablog.com/2009/12/21/video-nokia-zero-why-the-next-flagship-needs-a-proper-name/

No matter what happens to an old model, you’ve always got the main brand to build earn recognition. Nokia did this a little bit with the N95 (N95 8GB) but then lost its way in polluting Nseries with craptastic devices.

Think of iPhone, Galaxy S – they instantly get the user to associate any reputation from the older devices with the newest one. It’s also easier to remember. It’s an iPhone – it’s the latest Galaxy S, and now, Lumia.

Despite possibly higher news reference to Windows Phone than lumia on its own, more people care about the Nokia Lumia than Windows Phone. It’s not really Windows Phone they’re after, but Nokia Lumia and the experience of Lumia (which, yes it’s WP but Nokia has made that their identity).

To give this some context though, N8 still gets a higher search ranking than Lumia at their highest peaks.

All dwarfed by Galaxy S

Relative to iPhone searches, it’s all a bit of a blip on the radar for all of those combined. Now iPhone has been around now since 2007. What Apple did best of all was not the product itself, but the branding, the association, the imagery, the culture, the reputation around iPhone, iOS and iPad.

iPhone is a more popular search term than Apple.

But Nokia still teeters back and forth between being a more popular search term than Apple.

Does it mean much? Well, that people are still looking for Nokia things. It should not, by any means, suggest any cause for celebration.

Lumiappaday #234: Sky Sports News demoed on the Nokia Lumia 900

Posted: 06 Jul 2012 03:08 AM PDT

Surprisingly a rather well made news app, by the name of Sky Sports News. This brings sports specific news, videos and info from Sky Sports. I like that they have a sports specific grid where looking at individual sports showcases not only news from that sports but information specific about that sport. e.g. ATP rankings for tennis.

There’s also a Sky Sports radio function.

The Dark Knight Rises Gotham City available to check out on Nokia Maps 3D

Posted: 06 Jul 2012 03:00 AM PDT

So this is rather awesome. Yesterday we heard that Gotham City in 3D may soon be something we could explore.

http://mynokiablog.com/2012/07/05/video-explore-gotham-city-in-3d/

I wasn’t aware when the site went live but TheVerge just posted a link to Nokia Connects that shows the page available. It has the Nokia Maps 3D interface but with a nifty Batman soundtrack to go along with it. This is pretty cool. You’ll have to log in through facebook. I hate needing to do that and always decline facebook requests but I had to check this one out.

It’s all in night (Dark Knight) with a misty, eire haze. I love the soundtrack. I could let this run all day in the background.

What a brilliant way to showcase Nokia Maps 3D. I hope we see more of Nokia Maps 3D in the future (and in mobile devices) despite of course, the C3 folks now being at Apple.

There seems to be places to unlock

And map view looks like a map from a video game. Sweet.

Ex Apple Exec, Jean-Louis Gassée on Nokia, Elop and the board

Posted: 06 Jul 2012 02:48 AM PDT

Jean-Louis Gassée, ex Apple Exec is giving advice that Nokia should go ahead and fire Elop and the whole board. I’ve not really heard of this guy up until now or know why his opinion should weigh more than anyone else’s. Check out his Wiki page for more info. It seems that JLG himself was forced out by Apple’s board for poor performance. Well, that’s what Wiki said about him. Although he’s done quite a bit outside of the Apple thing, his name is referenced most as an ex Apple guy, which is probably why his opinion about Nokia is spreading.

Anyway, JLG said:

I think that Elop will have to go, but I also think that the board also needs to be renewed with people who have an understanding and working knowledge of the mobile industry

http://www.computing.co.uk/ctg/news/2188976/nokia-elop-board-jean-louis-gassee

Is it really in his best interest to say that Nokia should just give up this whole transition at such critical make or break moments? Too much has been leading up to the launch of the WP8 devices. It seems based on other news that Nokia knew all about the WP7 limitations and were already working on WP8 devices, it was always about WP8 and W8.

In the 90s, Dell’s CEO once made a point that if he were in charge of Apple, he would ‘shut it down and give the money back to the shareholder’. It might have made sense to do that for outsiders, but they followed through. I’m not saying the same resurgence will happen to Nokia any time soon, but I feel they’ve got a better chance following this current strategy through (as bad as it looks) as opposed to pressing the reset button all over again and going Android or another OS.

It’s easy to hold JLG’s opinion in high regard now that you might agree with him. But for Symbian fans, he also advised back in 2010 that Symbian should be dropped in favour of Android.

I told them to drop everything and go Android. Do it in secret and let the rumours fly… I would have used Nokia's design flare [sic] to make very nice phones

http://www.forbes.com/sites/briancaulfield/2012/07/05/jean-louis-gassee-nokias-board-ceo-should-go/

JLG reiterates that Symbian was dead. He says carriers were running away from Symbian in large numbers. Thus it made sense to move away from Symbian. BUT, JLG says the plans might have been revealed too early. Note, that infamous burning platform memo was never meant to be for the public.

He did a very good thing, which is to tell everyone that it is an eco-system 'play’, not a platform play. That was very insightful. But then he reveals the plans without implementing them. Everyone knew that Symbian phones were dead-enders and Nokia’s partners – the carriers – ran away from Symbian in large numbers

http://www.computing.co.uk/ctg/news/2188976/nokia-elop-board-jean-louis-gassee

As noted in the Forbes article, he would have preferred Nokia to switch away from Symbian in secret. With such a big company as Nokia, would that ever have been possible? I feel like we’re just going to be stirring up the same old arguments again as to why the memo was released to the employees and why Nokia made the partnership in Feb 11. Not to mention the mass of unknown internal challenges Nokia was dealing with. I’m sure folks have already settled one way or another on their beliefs but it seems people will never get tired of talking about it so feel free to do that.

The computing article then goes on about JLG’s opinions on OPK who

presided over a confused platform strategy featuring multiple iterations of the Symbian operating system and Linux-based alternative

http://www.computing.co.uk/ctg/news/2188976/nokia-elop-board-jean-louis-gassee

Before JLG’s recommendations, the board were already thinking about ditching OPK but were not happy to go with Android.

Cheers all for the tip!

OPK: I believe Nokia’s future

Posted: 06 Jul 2012 01:35 AM PDT

image from mtv3.fi

Former Nokia CEO, Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo was interviewed at MTV3.FI speaking briefly about what’s happening at Nokia.

http://www.mtv3.fi/uutiset/talous.shtml/2012/07/1577096/olli-pekka-kallasvuo-uskon-nokian-tulevaisuuteen

Not much was said but he did say that he believes the company managed in the best possible way. I’ll trust Joni’s translation over google’s:

I believe that Nokia is run by smart people and they’ve made the best
possible decisions, and by that way Nokia will survive.

About lay-offs: He didn´t comment whether he would have made similar
decisions. (is not in a position to give a comment about that…)

Cheers Joni for the tip!

Video: Nokia 808 PureView vs Sony NEX-7, video, AF and audio test.

Posted: 06 Jul 2012 01:26 AM PDT

This video shows the Nokia 808 PureView video and AF against the Sony NEX-7. The NEX-7 is a mirrorless interchangeable lens camera that targets advanced users, twice as expensive as the 808.

The Nokia 808 PureView’s video is using zoom to match the field of view of NEX-7. Notice how slow and inaccurate the autofocus is of the NEX-7 in comparison to the 808.

The second video tests out the audio.

The focus looks bad in this video because this is NOT an AF lens. The 808 was also set to ‘manual’ focus.

The rich recording on the 808 isn’t as impressive as I’ve heard it before. There’s a strange sound (like wind blowing against the mic) that I’ve not noticed in an 808 video before. It’s often present in phones/pocket cams but it was something the 808 I found reduced a lot, so it’s strange to hear it here.
