Strange Nokia phone design with unknown segment above the screen

Posted: 17 Jul 2012 02:20 PM PDT

This apparently surfaced from some new Nokia design patents.

What could it be? I have no idea. Possibly a d-pad for a return to old N-gage gaming? :p

These designs are apparently new, appearing October 2011.

What do you reckon it might be?

Nokia Lumia 900 Rolling out from Argentina

Posted: 17 Jul 2012 01:46 PM PDT

In addition to the Nokia Lumia 710 (produced in Brazil) the Nokia Lumia 900 is now being manufactured assembled in Nokia’s own factories in Argentina. This is part of Nokia’s move away from the initial manufacturing produced by Compal (the only way Nokia could get Lumias out quick enough as their own factories were not yet equipped for it).

My Dream Nokia #54: Stunning 41MP Nokia Lumia 1001 PureView Concept

Posted: 17 Jul 2012 01:13 PM PDT

Well hello My Dream Nokia #54. This in a way reminds me of #52but quite a bit more polished and ready for main stream as the design is just that extra bit sleeker. A little bit like #49 too.

This work was sent to us by Mkrtchyan Edgar who says he created this in SolidWorks.

As you can see, this design gets plenty of cues from the N9/800, but the whole screen curves around to the side whilst the bottom leaves little space to be wasted, yet gives enough for a flicker of colour.

This is a Lumia PureView concept, the Nokia Lumia 1001.

  • WP8, Dual Core 1.6GHz,
  • 4.3″ 1280×768, Gorilla Glass
  • AMOLED CBD
  • 41MP PureView
  • Full HD, Xenon
  • 2200mAh battery
  • 1.3MP front camera
  • HDMI, DLNA, USB OTG, USB Mass Storage, 3.5mm Audio/Video, NFC
  • 16/32GB +MicroSD up to 64GB
  • 125X68X9(12)mm
  • 160g
  • Monoblock polycarbonate
Is this hump acceptable? If it delivers even half of what the 808 can do performance wise, then yes. It might be too much to ask though to get it wedged into 12mm.
Wow, this is very, very drool worthy, no?
I don’t think this would be too much to ask (except perhaps for the camera. I’d be happy with 12mp Xenon)

This set up is a little less flattering for some reason.

About "My Dream Nokia"

I'm sure you've dreamt up your PERFECT Nokia device/UI. What it would look like, what it would feel like, what features it would have. Why don't you share it with the world? Or at least with other Nokia fans :D .

It could be your own photoshopped or rendered work (seriously, you don't need mega skills in either, basic paint job is often enough to convey a concept) of your dream product.

SEND this in similarly to tips@mynokiablog.com with the title "My Dream Nokia" and perhaps the model number (and a little description, maybe a few specs in the message area? Though this bit not necessary).

Who knows, maybe an image might flutter over to Nokia and through whatever route end up being real.

Highly flexible hinge for dual screened future Nokias?

Posted: 17 Jul 2012 07:11 AM PDT

SlashGear reports that Nokia has applied for a patent involving a hinge folding tablet which could possibly then fit in your pocket. I’m sure there are already Android devices like this, right?

Abstract description:

…an apparatus comprises a flexible hinge comprising first and second layers; the first layer comprising an elastomer and the second layer comprising a composite fabric.

This was filed back in January 6th, 2011. It is not indicative of any future products Nokia may be coming out with. Even live prototype devices from Nokia mean nothing in the over all grand scheme of the Nokia roadmap.

Possible relations to this?

http://mynokiablog.com/2011/05/04/nokias-dual-display-3d-communicator-seen-in-patent-app/

We haven’t heard anything regarding Nokia tablets. All we know so far are hints of a hybrid smartphone tablet.

http://mynokiablog.com/2012/05/03/ollila-nokia-was-too-slow-but-now-will-deliver-products-on-time-suggests-hybrid-smartphonetablet/

Something like this could be seen as a hybrid smartphone/tablet.

BTW, something like this does not necessarily need to have two screens, though it would make sense to expand the screen space.

Nokia 808 PureView (Music) recordings

Posted: 17 Jul 2012 03:22 AM PDT

Another blog has been set up purely to showcase (music) videos recorded on a Nokia 808 PureView. This is set up by Jarmo Timonen, creator of the blog:

http://nokia808recordings.blogspot.fi/

You’re going to have to get some really good headphones out to do rich recording the playback justice it desrves.

See, now this is a video. It is BOTH about having fantastic picture quality and audio quality. As shown in our last post, a comparison video took the quality of the 808′s sound recording for all the other competing devices. Clearly the rest would have all failed in this instance, not to mention they would not have been able to zoom in like the 808 at all.

Cheers Timmo for the tip!

MobileSyrup’s Nokia 808 PureView ReView

Posted: 17 Jul 2012 03:11 AM PDT

It has been a while since we’ve seen any major reviews of the Nokia 808 PureView (as they all came out pretty close together).

Here is Canadian tech blog, MobileSyrup’s take on the Nokia 808 PureView. Instantly from the URL you can expect praises for the camera. How will the rest of it stack up?

http://mobilesyrup.com/2012/07/14/hands-on-with-nokias-pureview-808-you-shot-that-with-a-phone/
The PureView 808 isn't going to win any awards for design or software — it's hefty, clunky and kind of a brick — but it is certainly exciting for what it foreshadows. The next few years will be fought over iterative hardware jumps — quad-core, DDR3, HD — but imaging is an area ripe for innovation. We've already seen the beginning of such a revolution with burst mode on the HTC One series and Galaxy S III, and we're looking forward to what Microsoft comes up with in the next version of Windows Phone.

Is burst mode imaging innovation now? I’m sure Nokia’s been innovating quite a bit on imaging for a while (they just suck so bad at advertising that the world doesn’t know it. Yeah, I’m gonna keep harping on about the poor advertising department until they do something decent again).

Cheers stylinred for the tip.

Leaked? Nokia Asha 308/309 around the corner?

Posted: 17 Jul 2012 03:06 AM PDT

aikon171 has outed several upcoming Nokias before and another sighting is of the Nokia Asha 308/309.

Product info can be seen above as well as a couple of photos.

This is either a case to hide the handset or it has a very thick, rugged design.

Video Shootout: Apple iPhone 4S vs. Samsung Galaxy S III vs. Nokia 808 PureView vs. HTC One X

Posted: 17 Jul 2012 02:19 AM PDT

In this video, PocketNow compares the iPhone 4S, the SGSIII, the Nokia 808 PureView and HTC OneX.

Whilst the 808 has already been pronounced in reviews as heads above all the competition for both videos and stills (including blind shoot outs against dedicated cameras to reduce/remove brand bias), it’s still interesting to see reactions from the public.

Looking at the comments, you can see them crowning the SGSIII. Note that the 808′s audio is being used for all the samples. A little unfair given how relatively s**t the sound is from the competing devices.

What they’re loving about the SGSIII seems to be the obnoxious colours. (Note we’re just talking about video quality here, not the rest of the device, which, credit where credit is due, SGSIII is a lovely smartphone)

HTC’s come a long way but looks terrible in comparison. It’s amazing that some of their ads focus on the camera when it’s not all that. In contrast, the best camera phone in the world and where are Nokia’s adverts? No where. Because Nokia doesn’t advertise things they’re good at.
