Nokia Belle Phones Get “Upload to SkyDrive” Update – Still Waiting Posted: 11 Jul 2012 02:55 PM PDT Just in time for Jays LumiAppADay about SkyDrive on the Lumia 900 Nokia have pushed an update for what seems to be all phones running Nokia Belle that should bring the option to upload/share directly to Skydrive. Honestly I’m super excited for this feature, especially since I’ve got my 808; currently the only two options to share images are through FB and Flickr (just discovered the latter) so SkyDrive is a welcome addition especially since my Lumia 900 automatically uploads my Twitter photos to it and saves them there. I’ve yet to get this update on my 808 but it seems some people are receiving it, have you guys got it yet?

Lumiappaday #239: SkyDrive demoed on the Nokia Lumia 900 Posted: 11 Jul 2012 02:10 PM PDT
You’ve probably got SkyDrive on your Nokia already, if not, get to it. As a Nokia Lumia owner, you’re instantly set to go with a Live account when you set your Lumia up. That means you’ve either got a free 7GB (or 25GB) space to play with. This app should be paired up with the desktop app (I’ve got it installed on my mac and PC) which creates a SkyDrive folder which behaves like any other folder. If you add a file there, it will show up in your other locations where you have the SkyDrive app. I find this most useful with my work documents – saving to SkyDrive means I can pick up my work on my phone or my mac or my PC. Onto the app itself, it’s quite simply laid out. It shows you your list of files and folders and within your folders you see an explorer like grid of items. You can change the view from list to grid by pressing the ‘details’ button. BTW once signed in to SkyDrive on your Lumia it will get integrated into the rest of the phone (e.g. appearing in your albums). Adding files to SkyDrive folders in one app means those files end up on everywhere else you’ve installed SkyDrive to (as well as web browser SkyDrive) I don’t think the app version can do this, but if you view SkyDrive from the browser, you can actually view (quite scarily) ALL your files on the computer you have installed SkyDrive to. You have to authorise it first with a code but once you do, you can access all your files remotely. Oh also isn’t there supposed to be a feature whereby pictures you take automatically get sent up to SkyDrive? I’ve not bothered with that as I don’t want all my pics going there (and eating up my data/battery) but it has its uses. #239) SkyDrive

Kantar’s device sales numbers (150% growth for Symbian in USA :P) Posted: 11 Jul 2012 12:26 PM PDT Techcrunch reports on an analysis from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech on mobile device sales on some key markets. Ingrid says:
I’ve modified their table to include percentage growths. For some reason, the original tables showed W7 and Windows Mobile. . I’m finding the UK results quite surprising. 117% growth since this time last year for WP – the largest percentage of growth in comparison. Now of course it’s easy to get large percentage changes when you play with small numbers, but given the dire situation at MS/NOK, even any slight growth can’t be taken for granted.
Speaking of statcounter, here’s a look again at Finland so far (9.35% for all devices, so we could extrapolate perhaps at least 30% of sales???) For the usual context, Finland is a small country – population of only 5M. A large percentage is encouraging but would only convey more relief were we to see it in multiple/larger markets. China, for instance, the biggest mobile market, has a population of 1.4 BILLION. It shows up 0.56% for WP (constant, slow and steady growth though). Very tiny percentage but potentially more WP sales than Finland. With no new products on show but continuing threats from opposition, times will be tough for WP/Nokia Lumia until WP8 devices arrive. Even then, WP8 is no guarantee of success for MS/Nokia. Should WP8 catch on, Nokia still find themselves in a difficult fight on the WP turf with HTC and Samsung. Let me stick on my hat of hope again. Things may look dire but there’s still a glimmer of hope that everything falling in to place makes sense for Nokia in the long run. |
N9Apps: Opera for Nokia N9 updated Posted: 11 Jul 2012 01:44 AM PDT Apparently there’s an update for Opera on the Nokia N9. The above image is just a thumbnail as I couldn’t find Opera on the N9′s Nokia store to check. The Nokia Store link is here, found it from an old post on Opera for N9. I’ll check it again once my N9 is done updating to PR1.3. Edmund says this is version 12 where you can change the user agents. This is quite useful to have as some sites instantly bring you to locked mobile sites for certain browsers (and sometimes that prevents you from accessing their website completely).
Cheers Morpog and Edmund for the tip! |
Accessories: Awesome leather case that turns into a stand for the Nokia Lumia 900 Posted: 11 Jul 2012 01:37 AM PDT Here’s a really cool accessory I came across at Nokia Lounge and haven’t been able to find until yesterday on Amazon. This is possibly one of the best leather cases I’ve come across for a phone. Not only is it a full leather case that surrounds your Nokia Lumia 900, flip the cover around and it’s a stand! The part where the Nokia Lumia 900 inserts appears to be a silicon case. Much better than the usual hard inserts/clips that are 100% prone to breaking. Unless the silicon bit rips off the leather part, this seems to be a case that will be there for the long run.
When closed I think it looks very stylish. This is the tilt mechanism. You can see it in action better in the video. I haven’t got a clearer photo but there’s a cutout at the back for the camera/LED The case opens up sideways like a book. I didn’t have time to use the case properly (only noticed it on the way out of Nokia Lounge) so I don’t know what it would be like to try and take a phone call. I’m guessing I’d have to flip the flap back but that curvy lip at the edge may be problematic. Has anyone got this case to try that out? I think this would be fantastic to leave on your desk or the bed side table like this.

I’ve got PR1.3 for Nokia N9 :) Impressions on PR1.3? Posted: 11 Jul 2012 01:34 AM PDT Some of us have had just slightly over a week on PR1.3 – mine has just popped up and is installing. How many have you have got the update? Anyone out there still waiting? What’s your impressions so far from the update of “1000″ improvements. From what I’ve seen in the comments, there’s plenty of subtle performance changes. Note, after the update it is best to restart the N9. Andrew said:

Ld Sidious mentions inception not working. This post is over a week old and since then inception was updated for PR1.3
Incognito and JoeyV said it did not fix their Bluetooth problems
DKM fins 1.3 faster and smoother
Now that some of you guys have had a week with it, any other differences?
