Apple Shows Off 2005 iPhone Prototype “Purple”, Proves It Didn’t Copy Sony

Posted: 30 Jul 2012 04:52 AM PDT

Last week Apple hit the news and this time it wasn’t because of the iPhone 5 or iPad Mini leaks, but instead the official documents that show pics of older iPad and iPhone prototypes. Some of the iPhones were believed to resemble the older Sony devices, so people started criticizing the Cupertino giant. However, they came out today and proved them wrong.

It appears that Apple and a phone prototype called “Purple” made back in 2005, as shown in the image above. It has several resemblances to the OG iPhone and the Sony-styled devices came later, but just as enjoyable side projects, as they’re called by Apple. I seem to recall that at some point a designer/engineer close to Apple went ahead and said that they did actually borrow some design elements from Sony. It’s also very interesting that one of the older iPhone concepts resembles the Nokia N9 quite a bit, or better said… the other way around.

Anyway, I don’t expect Sony to press charges anytime soon, since they’ve never been the lawsuit type, at least not the phone making division. Also, it’s known that Sony and Apple were very close in the past, with Steve Jobs finding inspiration in Sony’s business when he took Apple to the heights of technology. The whole turtleneck thing and outfit was something he borrowed from a former Sony boss, as well as the business model, so Sony is credited with more than some random iPhone designs here.

Motorola and Nextel Brazil Unveil the Motorola i867 Ferrari Phone

Posted: 30 Jul 2012 02:08 AM PDT

If you’re a Ferrari fan and live in Brazil, you may want to know that Motorola and Nextel teamed up and came up with a Ferrari phone. This is not their first attempt at this, since they already have the Motorola i897 model with Ferrari branding. Now there’s a new Ferrari-inspired device called Motorola i867 Ferrari.

The handset runs Android 2.1, so it’s not your average high end luxury phone, but rather a lower end device. We’re dealing with a handset that sports a 3.1 inch touchscreen, integrated GPS, integrated WiFi, Bluetooth 2.1, a 3 megapixel camera with 4X zoom and push to talk. Other features include 200MB of storage, a microSD card slot and there’s also a 2GB microSD card bundled with the device. In Brazil the product retails for the equivalent of about $700, which is huge.

For that kind of money you can buy 3 Nexus 7 quad core tablets and you’ll still have money left. And the price on contract with Nextel Brazil isn’t that good either: around $300. Last I heard, Brazil was the country with the highest phone prices in the world, so this doesn’t surprise me.

Sharp Aquos SH-10D Japanese Handset Reaches the FCC, Gets Approved

Posted: 30 Jul 2012 01:25 AM PDT

NTT DoCoMo had a big batch of phones announced this past May and among them we found the Sharp Aquos SH-10D. Now the handset has reached the FCC and after all the paperwork was done, the product was certified to work in all the nations that can sell it. The device has those strangely angled corners to set it apart design wise.

Other than that the specs are pretty good and they include a 11.3mm chassis, Android 4.0.3, a 1.5GHz Snapdragon dual core CPU, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of ROM and a 4.5 inch 720p display. The handset is expected to debut in August 2012, according to rumors and it supports GPRS, EDGE, UMTS, HSDPA and HSUPA connectivity. It also does LTE and has a microSD card slot, as well as a microUSB 2.0 port, Bluetooth 3.0 and WiFi b/g/n.

As it happens usually with Japanese phones, this model has an infrared port and 1-Seg TV tuner. At the back we find a 12 megapixel camera with autofocus and macro mode, while at the front there’s a 0.3MP camera. Sharp Aquos SH-10D is powered by a 1900 mAh battery.

New Pictures of Next Gen iPhone (Now Fully Assembled) Leak Online (Video)

Posted: 30 Jul 2012 01:01 AM PDT

We’ve seen our share of iPhone 5 parts, rumors, specs and videos and now we get to see a fully assembled device, that’s ready to be turned on and go to stores. After finding out that the iPhone 5 is already in production in China, now we spot some images of functional new Apple handsets, posted by iLab online.

The photos show a black fully assembled next gen iPhone with a separated upper back area, with a different colour from the rest of the handset’s back. The design fits what we already knew and we can see the moved audio jack at the bottom, smaller dock connector and the bigger speaker grilles. Meanwhile Macotakara posted a video of the supposed next gen iPhone and its parts on its YouTube channel and you can watch the said video below. Notice how the front camera is now immediately above the earpiece, just like it was rumored.

With all these solid leaks, I’m beginning to think that the new iPhone might actually debut earlier than estimated, which is October/September. Should we expect a surprise debut in August, the month when Galaxy Note II is rumored to pop up? Apple has never been a company keen to surprise, when it comes to launch date, so their early iPhone 5 production is only a sign they’re cautious and get big stocks ahead of big demand.
