Lumiappaday #230: Presso Coffee Recipes demoed on the Nokia Lumia 900

Posted: 02 Jul 2012 02:05 PM PDT

Here’s an app created by friend and fellow Nokia blogger, Eduardo Umana who messaged us about a new app he created called Presso Coffee Recipes.

It’s a Nespresso recipe book and guide on what to do with the 16 capsule thingys from Nespresso (you can tell I don’t use Coffee makers). It’s a well made app, nicely presented. The recipe finder is quite nice and Ed says he’ll be adding new recipes each month.

The only thing I might want is to have names under the coloured capsule things present at all times in the recipe chooser.

Accessories: Nokia Lumia 900 Soft Case cover (CC-1037)

Posted: 02 Jul 2012 09:24 AM PDT

The last accessory to share with you today is another case, this time for the Nokia Lumia 900.

It’s a ‘soft case’ cover, like the silicone one you’d get with the Nokia Lumia 800. This is black which may suit a black Lumia 900 better than the white one as you can see a little border appears. There’s a gap at the bottom because I stretched the case a little too much when putting the phone inside.

We got this from MobileFun.co.uk as well, they have a wide range of phone covers available.

BTW there’s a really nice Nokia Lumia 900 leather case that I saw back in Helsinki though it seems to be non existent in shops.

Crazy Curved keyboard Concept Coming in WP8?

Posted: 02 Jul 2012 07:50 AM PDT

curvedy keyboard

This is definitely one of those things that’s just weird enough to really be useful; as you can clearly see it’s a curved keyboard to match the movement of your thumb, basic geometry really make the height of the keyboard a radius for the circle that is your thumbs reach. It seems to be a mix of QWERTY & T9 as there aren’t any individual  keys rather every 3 letters grouped together which means it’s going to heavily rely on text prediction, which isn’t really a bad thing considering how accurate the autocorrect on WP7.5 is.

Obviously the keyboard above would only work for right handed users; but I can’t imagine them having any difficulty inverting it for lefties, which once again shows the awesome flexibility of touch buttons (Steve Jobs was really right about them in the first iPhone release). Worth noting that WP currently doesn’t allow any 3rd party keyboards (even swype) nor does it have any alternate keyboards (T9, voice typing etc.) so it ‘s not difficult to believe that a new keyboard is in the works.

Do you think WP needs a new keyboard, if so would you use this one?

Accessories: Proporta Quillit Stylus Pen (Capacitive/Resistive/Pen stylus)

Posted: 02 Jul 2012 06:15 AM PDT

With drawing apps becoming popular (on both phone and tablet) I thought I’d check out what styluses are available today. The first one I’m checking out is a 3 in one. You might not want to carry a stylus on its own but if it’s also a pen, then that would be quite useful, no?

This is the Proporta, QUILLIT stylus pen that we got from MobileFun. You can check out other mobile phone styluses from there too.

It can be used for both capacitive and resistive touch screens as well as a pen. The stylus is metal and resembles a fancy, pretty looking pen.

The resistive nib is released by twisting the stylus in one direction and the other brings out the roller ball pen. At the other end, twisting brings out, not a capacitive nib but quite interestingly a brush.

This brush can also be used for cleaning the screen though I’m not sure it’s meant for that. Although it works with capacitive displays, the brush requires a teeny push, to the point that it kinda feels like you’re pushing buttons because of the give in the bristles. It’s nice though I think I might prefer a regular old capacitive nib (normally some kind of rubber).

This would also be useful for other phone operations (e.g. if it’s really cold or your hand is wet), but I find it most useful for drawing related apps. It certainly makes it easier than drawing with my index finger.

808 Pureview with Free Tripod Available in SmartBuy Jordan- 450 JOD

Posted: 02 Jul 2012 04:51 AM PDT

Just a quick update, anyone in Jordan who’s been wanting an 808 can now pick it up from SmartBuy fro 450 JOD ($635) and get the awesome Nokia gorillapod thingy with it; if I’m correct this is the first time Nokia have launched a phone through a 3rd party carrier as well as their Nokia store in Jordan, and it’s definitely one of the few times they actually threw in some goodies with it. At first the phone is only available in White and Black with the Red color coming soon.

Accessories: Nokia 808 PureView CC-3046 Eye Patch camera cover.

Posted: 02 Jul 2012 04:32 AM PDT

We’ve got  3 accessory posts today. The first one sent in by Janne who owns a Nokia 808 PureView. This is the cover that also acts as a lens cover. It works like an eye patch, sort of, to prevent those smudges that would otherwise wreck a photo – even by 808.

Janne says:

Got this recently, here are some pictures. Black and red versions are available, I haven’t seen the originally published red-black dual colored version anywhere. The cover is harder than a silicone case, but still I’d call this a soft case. Looks and feels good

It’s like a scabbard (sheath) for the mighty Excalibur (808).

This is a must have accessory for those serious about taking snaps on their 808 and not having to keep wiping the camera glass on their shirt (which itself is bad as you should be using some form of microfibre cloth).

Cheers Janne for the tip!

Firmware Update: Nokia N9 to PR1.3 available? v40.2012.21-3.001.19, 204.8MB

Posted: 02 Jul 2012 02:17 AM PDT

Ooh look here, it appears to be an update for the Nokia N9. This is the PR1.3 that we’ve heard so much about, and in particular, just a few days ago, Michael said would be out soon!

http://mynokiablog.com/2012/06/29/n9-pr-1-3-coming-soon-small-but-valuable-update-pr-1-4-possible/

That gives a little bit more credibility to the possiblity of 1.4 appearing. Michael said anything after PR1.2 would be a blessing. Well, there we go :)

The folks below seem to already have it, so it should start appearing in more places soon.

Cheers crisscross for the tip!

Video: Angry Birds on Nokia Asha full touch, Asha 311

Posted: 02 Jul 2012 02:10 AM PDT

Found some material I hadn’t published yet. This is an old demo of Angry Birds on the Nokia Asha Full touch, Asha 311.

You can see it plays quite well. Even though it supports multitouch, the zooming here is by a single finger (like the Nokia N900, swipe up or down to zoom). Other than that, it plays really well. Having a capacitive screen (as opposed to resistive on the 305) makes it more fun to play on the 311.

Video: Nokia 808 PureView vs Nokia N8 vs Samsung Galaxy SIII

Posted: 02 Jul 2012 01:30 AM PDT

In this video, the Nokia 808 PureView is compared with the brother, N8, and the Kpop SGSIII.

The 808 video looks a lot more stable than the N8 right? I think the continuous AF of the 808 is most superior. You can see some delay and focus hunting in the SGSIII when either N8 or 808 had already focused.

Without looking at the video, you can immediately tell which is the Nokia 808 PureView because of rich recording:

  • Super high quality rich sound. Nokia 808 PureView is spectacular, N8 is superb, SGSIII almost sounds painful in comparison.
  • Stereo
  • Actual left right stereo channel separation (left recorded on the left, right on the right, where as N8 is front and side)  which makes playback of the stereo a much more realistic experience. If something moves from left to right, you can see and hear it. This isn’t talked about enough and is an extremely overlooked feature that I have no doubt Nokia will fail to talk about.

There’s a full on comparison post here:

http://techprolonged.com/index.php/2012/07/01/nokia-808-pureview-camera-pictures-video-comparison-with-nokia-n8-samsung-galaxy-siii/2/

Dammit, where are my Nokia 808 PureView adverts that scream about this being THE BEST CAMERA PHONE IN THE WORLD!!!!!! It is absolutely unrivalled! I wish Nokia would quit being so damn coy and actually shout about the things their good at.Vid
