@Janole back on the Developer Champions programme

Posted: 24 Jul 2012 09:49 AM PDT

After the little blogosphere Drama, it appears @janole is now back on the Developer Champions programme.

Good job who ever sorted this out.

Got a very nice phone call this afternoon. I’m back in the Nokia Developer Champions program. Glad this issue has been resolved quickly.

Video: PocketNow’s Nokia 808 PureView ReView

Posted: 24 Jul 2012 09:30 AM PDT

I thought we had already covered pocketnow’s 808 review but apparently not.

Well here it is, 11 minutes of 1080p HD Nokia 808 PureView review.

The Nokia 808 PureView — winner of the GSMA Global Mobile Awards 2012 and 2012 TIPA Award for Best Imaging Innovation — shocked everyone at this year’s Mobile World Congress with its 41-megapixel camera sensor. Many understood the PureView Technology from the very beginning while others were simply considering it overkill. Nokia wanted to come up with a worthy successor to the Nokia N8, former King of Camera-phones, and the Finnish company believed that the 808 PureView would be just that.

However, straight from the beginning, the 808 PureView raised eyebrows because of the platform used to operate it: Nokia (ex-Symbian) Belle. Windows Phone couldn’t have been a choice at the moment because of its camera restrictions and MeeGo was sort of abandoned at birth by Nokia. Despite Nokia Belle, is the 808 PureView worth purchasing? And, are we crowning a new King of the Camera-phones? Watch our full review to find out!

Full text of Nokia’s Symbian champion layoff – No more Qt for Nokia’s future

Posted: 24 Jul 2012 02:18 AM PDT

On Saturday, there was a post about Nokia ‘Kicking out Symbian Developers’, with one high ranking name in particular, Gravity’s Jan Ole Suhr (@janole) losing his Nokia Developer Champion status.

http://mynokiablog.com/2012/07/21/what-the-hell-nokia-kicking-out-symbian-developers/

To shed a bit more light, this is apparently the letter sent out to the Nokia Champions. It shows a few things. C++/Qt apparently don’t fit into Nokia’s future. No Qt for next billion, No Qt for anything upcoming at Nokia.

However, Nokia are saying that they will not forget these champions. A new partnering programme begins in fall and these champions are automatically added to the programme and a future champion programme can be applied for which their past service will contribute heavily towards the decision.

The letter below was posted as a comment at AAS

“Hello XXXXX,

I wanted to let you know personally that a decision was made to drop Symbian C++ and Qt experts from the Champions program.  You appear to fall in this group.  If you feel you have expertise in other technologies or some experience that would affect your status please write to me.

Below is the standard information as you can see there still are benefits for you.

As you know in June Nokia decided to not pursue a Linux based operating system.  As a result, like the rest of the Nokia family the champions must make cuts to best fulfill the future goals of Nokia. In our opinion your expertise was in Qt or other technologies that do not fit into Nokia's future and a decision was made to end your Nokia Developer Championship early.

I want to personally thank you for your work as a Nokia Champion over the past few years and let you know that we are not just forgetting you. This fall Nokia Developer will start a new partnering program and you will be automatically added to this program with the option to opt out.  In addition you received this welcome gift and it is yours to use for the life of the device. Finally because of your devotion and dedication to Nokia if you wish to re-apply for the champions program this fall I will be sure to add weight to your application based on your past service.

Your championship will not expire until the end of July.

If you feel there is information that will affect your status please contact me.

As AAS’s Rafe Blandford replied:

I understand the decision. It make sense after all, in the context of the strategy switch, but think things could have been better handled (which is the main point I was trying to get across in the article), mainly around cutting things short for some developers.

Press Release: PureView^2 – Nokia completes acquisition of developers, technologies and intellectual property for imaging from Scalado

Posted: 24 Jul 2012 01:28 AM PDT

Today, Nokia published a press release that says the acquisition of Scalado is now complete. We first found out Nokia’s plans to acquire Scalado back in June. We’ve had several ace looking apps from Scalado on Nokia phones in the past, most recently the popular face time machine thing called ‘Rewind’ now found in Lumia phones called ‘Smart Group Shot’.

Below is the press release as well as a link to NokConv’s own article about Scalado for Nokia.

Nokia's Samuli Hanninen, VP, software program management, was able to share some of the bigger picture around where we plan to take camera phones next.

"We think that imaging is about to go through another major revolution," he told Conversations.

http://conversations.nokia.com/2012/07/24/nokia-boosts-imaging-know-how-with-exclusive-technologies-brains-and-ip-from-scalado/

The staff joining from Scalado will form a new centre for imaging excellence in Lund, Sweden, alongside the clever folk based in Nokia's Tampere and Espoo imaging teams who came up with PureView. The Lund team will focus on software to complement the existing hardware genius from the Finnish teams.

The expected results are perhaps best expressed as an equation:

PV + SC = PV^2

Though the latest and greatest camera phones might seem like they're perfect, we really have only just begun.

Press Release:

Acquisition aims to bring outstanding imaging experiences to Nokia Lumia smartphones

Espoo, Finland and Lund, Sweden: Nokia announced today that it has completed the acquisition of all technologies and intellectual property from Scalado AB, originally announced on June 14, 2012. As part of the transaction, approximately 50 world-class imaging specialists transferred to Nokia.

“We believe that this acquisition will strengthen Nokia’s leading position in mobile imaging and provide us with a great opportunity to create even better imaging products and applications,” said Jo Harlow, executive vice president, Smart Devices at Nokia. “We welcome the skilled and passionate professionals from Scalado to Nokia and are excited to have them work with the rest of our talented and dedicated imaging experts to bring world-class imaging solutions to our Nokia Lumia smartphones. The Nokia team is already responsible for many leading innovations in mobile imaging and, together with the experts from Scalado, we aim at astonishing the world with new, outstanding imaging experiences.”

Lund has now become a key site for Nokia’s imaging software for smartphones, in addition to Nokia’s existing locations in Espoo and Tampere, Finland.

“We’re excited to join Nokia at such an important time in its smartphone story,” said Sami Niemi, co-founder of Scalado and now head of Capture & Relive, Smart Devices at Nokia. “The technologies and competences we’ve developed should help move from taking photos to capturing memories and emotions.”

Press Release: Nokia comments on Moody’s credit rating announcement

Posted: 24 Jul 2012 01:22 AM PDT

This press release was published yesterday as a response to Moody’s latest credit rating announcement on Nokia.

Espoo, Finland – Timo Ihamuotila, Nokia’s Executive Vice President and CFO, comments on today’s rating decision from Moody’s:

“While we are disappointed with Moody’s decision, its impact on the company is limited. We are quickly taking action to position Nokia for future growth and success. Nokia will continue to focus on lowering the company’s cost structure rapidly, improving cash flow and maintaining a strong financial position.”

Nokia’s financial position remains strong. As of June 30 2012, Nokia had gross a cash balance of EUR 9.4 billion, and a net cash balance of EUR 4.2 billion both balances being higher than one year ago. Nokia also has access to additional liquidity via a revolving credit facility of EUR 1.5 billion. This is entirely undrawn and available to the company through March 2016.

Further information on Nokia’s debt instruments can be found in the company’s Q2 2012 Interim Report issued on July 19, 2012.

N9Apps: Video editor on Nokia N9

Posted: 24 Jul 2012 01:20 AM PDT

This video shows (in Russian?) a simple video editor on the Nokia N9.

I like that time line at the bottom. Splicing clips doesn’t look too complicated. Not sure if you can add transitions/text.

Another (small) price drop for Nokia 808 PureView at Amazon.com ($668.07)

Posted: 24 Jul 2012 01:15 AM PDT

You guys are watching the 808 prices like a hawk. From the initial start price it did dip by about 14USD last week, and now it’s gone down further to almost $31).

Every little helps I guess. In another month it would be likely to go down at least $100.
