Ouch. Or yay? Microsoft Surface 32GB model rumour price at $1000/£648?

Posted: 25 Jul 2012 10:51 AM PDT

This is not the official price but the first indications so far on the price of the ARM based 32GB Microsoft Surface tablet.

Hopeful Nokia fans (and other fans of other manufacturers possibly dealing with W8) were wishing this was simply a reference design of sorts, something to push other manufacturers into upping their game for W8 tablets. Hence they wished it would be priced a little higher than usual. Normally for a successful tablet, it would have to be cheap. Cheaper than the iPad. If priced the same as the iPad, folks tend to just buy an iPad. (e.g. Amazon’s kindle fire tablets or ASUS’s Google Nexus 7s that are apparently sold at loss – though big gains for google eventually in gaining a new customer to sell ads to.)

For comparison, a 32GB iPad costs $599 for 2G and $729 for 3G/4G. The 64GB c3G/4G model is $829. A higher price might have been warranted in the Intel version of MS Surface, not ARM.

At $1000, that gives Nokia some room to compete. Well, should it even decide to compete in the tablet space. As of now, they’re quire focused on their phones (and thus have no excuse come fall if it sucks. It better not, dammit! The iThings are getting more tempting, especially with the med school dishing out iPads for free). I’d like a W8 tablet to try but for me, I can’t justify that price considering what else is available on the market. Hopefully Nokia delivers something great on specs, great on price. We’ve seen Nokia produce an absolutely stunning work of art with their first Windows Device, from 2009 – the Nokia Booklet 3G. But it was underpowered and overpriced and so never got anywhere. It was very nice to use and quite amazing that I wouldn’t have to see the face of a charger for a while or need to be in the vicinity of WiFi networks to get any work/blogging done.

BB OS10 Looking Alot Like Symbian/Meego?

Posted: 25 Jul 2012 09:58 AM PDT

Quick random thought; just now some “leaked screenshots” of the upcoming BB OS10 were made available on the interweb, out of curiosity I had a peek and I had a strange sense of De Ja Vu; is it just me or do these leaks look ALOT like Symbian/Meego?

Here’s the “Leaked” slide of the new OS:

And here are a couple shots of the messaging apps on the N9

Notice how the the keyboard has almost the same exact layout (minus the emoticons which is what reminds me of Symbian’s keyboard particularly Whatsapp for Symbian), the other UI element that seems to  have been “Borrowed” is the consistent bar at the bottom that made its way into Nokia Belle, granted the BB one looks cooler but it’s the same concept right??

So what do you guys think, is it just me being paranoid or is there something fishy going on here?

Nokia Launches Lumia 610 “Quiksilver” Edition + Cool Surf Party Video

Posted: 25 Jul 2012 09:27 AM PDT

610 Quicksilver

The latest phone to get a new dip in the color vat is the Lumia 610; this time arising with some awesome Quiksilver brandings over a silver/white background (gotta say that looks pretty darn cool). Along with the launch of the phone there was a range of WP activities including the ever present “Smoked by WP”, some spray on I <3 WP tattoos and some snappy WP shades for all. All in all it looks like a pretty sweet event, check out the video below:

Forbes: “Who Are The Top Ten Influencers In Social, Mobile, and Cloud?” :p

Posted: 25 Jul 2012 07:29 AM PDT

“Influencers in Mobile, May”. I don’t think this list is in any particular order.

Hey, this is a nice little bit of recognition. In an article titled “Who Are The Top Ten Influencers In Social, Mobile, and Cloud?” My Nokia Blog gets a little mention at the end. The article is mainly about a tracking system, Traacker, that looks around for influencers.

I wouldn’t put too much weight on my presence amongst those awesome guys on that list. I think this was a personal list by the author Haydn Shaughnessy so I might be a typo. It’s still pretty cool :D . (Based on actual statistics I’m not sure I’d even be in a top 100,000 for actual mobile influencers)

Check it out: http://www.forbes.com/sites/haydnshaughnessy/2012/05/22/who-are-the-top-ten-influencers-in-social-mobile-cloud/

5) Chris Davies – SlashGear

Not sure how Haydn made up his mind, but on behalf of the team, the credit and thanks definitely goes to you guys for the stories you tip to us, and the subsequent blog posts that you guys retweet, share on twitter/facebook/mail etc. I think it’s pretty cool to see ‘Nokia’ at the top of a list somewhere and my name to be mentioned in the same space as these guys.

I particularly remember May being busy because of my summer exams but at the same time packed full of Nokia related news too (my revision was punctuated with Nokia news). Thanks Haydn for the mention!

Video: Sketch – Car jump-started with nokia 3310

Posted: 25 Jul 2012 05:50 AM PDT

Everyone’s reminiscing about their old Nokias these days, helped in part by the indestructible Nokia Meme.

This isn’t quite that but it is going on the theme of nostalgia. These guys have recorded a little action clip where by the 3310 is the hero. What does it do? Well it just starts the car, ending with the pun above.

What’s that Nokia time :)

Nokia’s facebook page is checking in again on the What’s that Nokia game.  Can you tell what it is? The comments on the facebook group are calling out all sorts of random Nokias.

Rumours: Nokia Lumia 910, 920 WP8 phones coming September 5th?

Posted: 25 Jul 2012 02:34 AM PDT

T

Treat this with bags of salt. Rumour has it that new WP8 Nokia Lumia devices are coming September 5th. Translation didn’t specify how this information came about.

The date would tie up nicely to Nokia World which got moved early to September 5-6th (btw, we still have not heard any more details about that, right?) as well as something supposedly amazing coming on September 7th to the Nokia Store in Helinki.

My contract is due for renewal. The new Lumias better be amazing.

Want this for my next Nokia Lumia! ‘Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro blows away the competition’

Posted: 25 Jul 2012 02:19 AM PDT

Over at Engadget, they’ve been looking at Benchmarks of the Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro (APQ8064) and says that it blows away the competition.

This was much expected as Qualcomm’s previous Dual Core S4 chips had already been beating its peers in certain benchmark tests too.

Richard Lai says:

“it’s only natural for the quad core S4 Pro to annihilate them”

“APQ8064-based MDP easily beat the Tegra 3-based One X and Nexus 7, as well as the Exynos 4412-based Galaxy S III.”

http://www.engadget.com/2012/07/24/qualcomm-snapdragon-s4-pro-apq8064-benchmark/

That’s all well and good but will this ever make it to a Nokia Lumia in the next 20 years >_>.

Qualcomm’s development unit looks pretty good. Full the the brim with ports and even sports a 13mp camera with LED flash. I’m not putting any more hopes into ever seeing a Nokia tablet.
