Pandoras box: More WP8 features…

Posted: 26 Jul 2012 11:24 AM PDT

Yes, I am talking about WP8′s SDK which got leaked today.People from the blogs, developers and other enthusiasts are not hesitating in getting their hands on the leaked version of WP8′s SDK.As the time is passing, people all around the world are exploring new features from SDK and revealing them at the same time too.

I am covering top 3 features which got leaked till now, to become a possibility in near future WP8 devices:

1.Peer to Peer bluetooth sharing, yeah it actually will allow the file sharing b/w the Bluetooth enabled mobiles. Not only this developers will also be able to access the Bluetooth core to connect the phone to the other bluetooth devices such as fitness devices like pacemakers, trackers, etc.

It might open a whole new range of accessories like keyboard dock, music docks, etc
I don’t actually believe this much from WMPoweruser as they are claiming that Bluetooth in non NFC WP8 devices will become a substitute to communicate with NFC device(I don’t think Bluetooth v4 is also able to do this).

2.CNS(centralized notification system): Microsoft summit 2012, the day when WP8 got officially announced.Microsoft reported there will be CNS in Windows phone 8 platform to raise the presence and integrate the 3rd party applications in more user friendly manner.  Edit (Ali): The image below is only a render of a “wish feature” unfortunately as of now the only notification center on WP would be the small tiles arranged into a information hub.

The 3rd party applications will also have ability to customize the phone’s lock screen too or if you want the notifications of the single application on your device’s lock screen that too is also set to become a reality sooner.

3.Extended Camera functionality: Will bring the support for better optics utilization, bring some new amount of camera filters, other camera features such as high speed ISO, burst mode, etc.

A new feature that will be present inside WP8 is camera lens, not the real optics. It’s a camera profile app feature by which we can create by adding your own personal features using the integrated camera filters, shooting modes, etc into a single profile and hence defined as lens.

Other consumer features which are also coming: Music can be added to media library, extended voice integration, new start screen, new version of Internet Explorer, more freedom to 3rd party apps, better maps integration with Nokia maps, Nokia drive, new improved UI, new multitasking, etc.

WP8 SDK Points to 3D Nokia Maps, Bluetooth sharing, DataSense, Extended Camera Support and Much more

Posted: 26 Jul 2012 10:23 AM PDT

First off I didn’t know WordPress could support Gifs in the post (this is awesome!), anyways earlier we mentioned that the WP8 SDK was leaked online, after some snooping from the more tech savvy of the internet community some information about WP8 has been acquired:

  • New Camera capabilities/apps (PureView support??)

In Windows Phone SDK 8.0 Developer Preview, you can create a lens that appears in the Windows Phone built-in camera app. A lens provides the user a consistent entry point into the viewfinder of your app. It is a type of extensibility available to apps that provide unique camera functionality via the camera APIs. As a lens, your app provides the user with a viewfinder experience and interacts with the camera directly. For example, a bar code reader lens would present a viewfinder to display the bar code that it's going to scan.

Lenses shown in the lens picker also are listed in Marketplace in their standard app categories. Although a lens must provide a viewfinder experience when launched from the lens button, the app can provide other experiences, too. For example, you might create a productivity app that displays a panorama control when a user starts it from the App list. But when a user starts the app from the lens picker, it displays a viewfinder.

When a user taps a lens in the lens picker, the corresponding app is launched via a deep link URI. The deep link URI targets the corresponding app and includes the string ViewfinderLaunch to indicate that the app is to be launched as a lens. Apps can use the deep link URI to recognize a lens launch.

After opening a lens, the user can tap the hardware Back button to return to the built-in Camera app.

  • 3D Nokia maps with Hardware acceleration- hopefully this will be mindbogglingly amazing, one good side of Nokia Maps becoming the default for WP is that you can be sure MSFT wont let it sit un-advertised; I expect them to milk it for all it’s worth, rightfully so.
  •  Hot Swappable Micro Sd support; but apps only have read capabilities with no Write rights.
  • Improved Camera UI; as you can see there’s a shortcut to “camera related apps” from the camera itself (hopefully Instagram will come soon to ease the hearts of sepia cat lovers)
    cam
  • New DataSense (data counter/tracker)- I believe this is a separate app than what Nokia is bringing to Lumia devices
    datasense1
  • Microsoft Wallet (with NFC payment support of course):
    wallet
  • Of course the SDK tool shows support for the new WP resolutions (720P yay!):
    device_types
  • And the new start screen
    icon_edit1
  • I’ve also seen a bunch of tweets that Apps can now “auto-upload photos” to services (which should mean looser API  restrictions, Hoorah!)
  • Also reported is that Developers have access to the lock screen Apis meaning 3rd party applications such as whatsapp, Nokia Pulse, tango should be able to notify users of new events directly on the home screen (hopefully we can also see some sort of Nokia Sleeping screen/Always on amoled with double to wake support)

"In Windows Phone, the lock screen contained a handful of notifications such as the number of new Outlook emails and text messages. In Windows Phone 8 Developer Preview, end users can choose to customize this area with any third party apps they choose. As a developer, you can enable your app to be used in this feature. "

An app can provide content for the following four items on the lock screen:

    • The background image. This image is unrelated to lock screen notifications, and is documented at Lock screen background for Windows Phone.
    • An app icon
    • An app count
    • App text
  • Enhanced Bluetooth support including sharing files (restrictions may apply to file types) over bluetooth
  • Network simulator is also now built in apparently:
    xltc.png

That seems about it for now, lots of exciting stuff to look forward to, most importantly the looser API restrictions, meaning developers really have a chance to go all out with their projects

Uh-Oh? Windows Phone 8 SDK Leaked Online

Posted: 26 Jul 2012 07:25 AM PDT

It appears somebody over at Microsoft is a bit over-excited about the upcoming WP8 release as the WP8 SDK was published on Microsoft’s own site earlier today under version number is 50522.01. requiring both Windows 8 Release Preview and will also require Visual Studio 11 to run. Was this accidental or Microsoft trying to give Devs a head-start on cooking up those apps?

If anyones interested you can download the SDKs from here: http://www.wpxap.com/thread-455816-1-1.html

Lumiappaday #254: Game Of Thrones DB demoed on the Nokia Lumia 900

Posted: 26 Jul 2012 07:08 AM PDT

This app is called Game of Thrones DB (Database). It’s a database for the very popular show, Game of Thrones.

As well as character info you can get wallpapers and ringtones for your Lumia. This app has a lot of potential to be something really good with a bit of polishing. As it is, there’s a lot of things that I like, it just needs better implementation (maps, family trees, character bios etc). Feature wise, it’s good, it just needs better presentation.

Video: Symbian/Nokia Belle FP2 demo

Posted: 26 Jul 2012 06:31 AM PDT

This is a video that is supposedly showing Symbian/Nokia Belle FP2.

I am not sure if there are any additional third party effects going on here or if this is pure Belle FP2 stuff.

I’m liking that swipey homescreen.

NOKIA Update for Windows Phone for Nokia Lumia 900 too? + Demo filmed with Nokia 808 PureView

Posted: 26 Jul 2012 04:22 AM PDT

I saw a draft by Ali an hour ago about a mysterious update for his Nokia Lumia 900. Mine popped up with a notification for an update too and is currently in the middle of an install.

All it tells me right now is NOKIA update for Windows Phone. Not sure what else is there. Currently, Nokia Lumia 800/710s are getting a more substantial update too. I haven’t fired up my 800 in a while to get that update. I’ll check it later.

Ali also posted this video about 11 hours ago:

Ali explains what comes in the updates (flip to silence & new location alerts)

I agree with Ali. The naming of WP updates suck.

Edit (Ali): Just a side note, the video was filmed with 808 (although I chose 720 instead of 1080), I was really blown away by the sound quality; especially when played back on the 808 over the purities with the “Dolby Studio” active, and of course the zoom function is pretty awesome :D

Nokia 808 PureView viral ad could cost Nokia a R$6.5 Million fine?

Posted: 26 Jul 2012 03:25 AM PDT

So, Nokia in Brazil took the time to advertise the Nokia 808 PureView. Yay! 808 needs (more) quality, effective advertising.

But this effort could be all for nothing, and even be detrimental as Nokia could be facing a R$6.5 Million fine (equivalent to just about 3.2M USD). This is because Nokia had apparently created a viral video campaign without letting viewers know this was an advert.

Not sure what the premise of the actual ad was. I don’t particularly understand what’s going on in the video below. I hear ‘Finland’ mentioned at 00:11

Update:  Rodrigo informs that it is not ‘Finland’ but ‘Fernanda’

Marcos also gives an explanation to the video:

Here's the dramatic conclusion to this story. Even if you don't know portuguese, you can understand. Daniel keeps searching for the love of his life, Fernanda, and then some guy sends him a video where you can see that the zoom in the 808 pureview is so powerful it actually shows Fernanda phone number in the back. Awesome action, massive repercussion in Brasil! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aA31u-nCMq0

Nokia maps app for windows phone updated to version 2.5 with couple of new added features and other slight improvement and bug fixes.

The two features added in version 2.5:

  • —->Groupon integration(U.S only).
  • —->Route planner.

This update is reported to appear on Windows Phone marketplace in a matter of time. While I asked Nokia whether symbian or Meego are getting any update in their maps application, they replied:

“We will let you know through Social Media in the future”.

Trick or Treat: Microsoft’s Build 2012 event – October 30th to November 2nd

Posted: 26 Jul 2012 02:55 AM PDT

Again, some might be wondering, what does this have to do with Nokia? Well, a lot since Nokia’s bringing Windows Phone and possibly Windows 8 products.

The date MS’s Build 2012 event spans from October 30th to November 2nd – their next developer conference. This is a week after W8 officially arrives (October 26th). WP8 will be one of the things MS will be talking about.

…in addition to Windows 8, we will have lots of other stuff to talk about, too: Windows Azure, Windows Phone 8, Windows Server 2012, Visual Studio 2012, and much more.

http://channel9.msdn.com/Blogs/Vector/Announcing-BUILD-2012

Apparently this is not one to be missed and will be unlike anything MS has held on their corporate campus in a long time.

Since they’ll be talking about WP8, do  you reckon this will be after handsets have already been released?

Registration begins on August 8: www.buildwindows.com.

I wonder if they’re gonna do something Hallow’een related? Trick or Treat with some freebie Surfaces?

Cheers Dave² for the tip.
