Nokia Belle Phones Get “Upload to SkyDrive” Update – Still Waiting

Posted: 11 Jul 2012 02:55 PM PDT

Just in time for Jays LumiAppADay about SkyDrive on the Lumia 900 Nokia have pushed an update for what seems to be all phones running Nokia Belle that should bring the option to upload/share directly to Skydrive. Honestly I’m super excited for this feature, especially since I’ve got my 808; currently the only two options to share images are through FB and Flickr (just discovered the latter) so SkyDrive is a welcome addition especially since my Lumia 900 automatically uploads my Twitter photos to it and saves them there.

I’ve yet to get this update on my 808 but it seems some people are receiving it, have you guys got it yet?

Update: I followed the link left int eh comments below and it worked, so if anyones in a rush go here:
Download .sis installation file here http://www.n8fin.com/nokia-belle-puhelimille-paivitys-upload-to-skydrive/

Download the .sis and enjoy (Installs to C is probably best)

Lumiappaday #239: SkyDrive demoed on the Nokia Lumia 900

Posted: 11 Jul 2012 02:10 PM PDT

You’ve probably got SkyDrive on your Nokia already, if not, get to it. As a Nokia Lumia owner, you’re instantly set to go with a Live account when you set your Lumia up. That means you’ve either got a free 7GB (or 25GB) space to play with.

This app should be paired up with the desktop app (I’ve got it installed on my mac and PC) which creates a SkyDrive folder which behaves like any other folder. If you add a file there, it will show up in your other locations where you have the SkyDrive app. I find this most useful with my work documents – saving to SkyDrive means I can pick up my work on my phone or my mac or my PC.

Onto the app itself, it’s quite simply laid out. It shows you your list of files and folders and within your folders you see an explorer like grid of items. You can change the view from list to grid by pressing the ‘details’ button. BTW once signed in to SkyDrive on your Lumia it will get integrated into the rest of the phone (e.g. appearing in your albums). Adding files to SkyDrive folders in one app means those files end up on everywhere else you’ve installed SkyDrive to (as well as web browser SkyDrive)

I don’t think the app version can do this, but if  you view SkyDrive from the browser, you can actually view (quite scarily) ALL your files on the computer you have installed SkyDrive to. You have to authorise it first with a code but once you do, you can access all your files remotely.

Oh also isn’t there supposed to be a feature whereby pictures you take automatically get sent up to SkyDrive? I’ve not bothered with that as I don’t want all my pics going there (and eating up my data/battery) but it has its uses.

Kantar’s device sales numbers (150% growth for Symbian in USA :P)

Posted: 11 Jul 2012 12:26 PM PDT

Techcrunch reports on an analysis from Kantar Worldpanel ComTech on mobile device sales on some key markets.

Ingrid says:

The newer entrant, Microsoft's Windows Phone is showing positive signs, in that its percentage of sales is growing in different markets, but it remains in the single digits, and will be hard-pressed to make inroads in the short term with Android device makers continuing to perform so well.

http://techcrunch.com/2012/07/11/kantar-android-now-accounting-for-more-than-half-of-all-android-sales-across-u-s-europe-and-oz/

I’ve modified their table to include percentage growths. For some reason, the original tables showed W7 and Windows Mobile. .

I’m finding the UK results quite surprising. 117% growth since this time last year for WP – the largest percentage of growth in comparison. Now of course it’s easy to get large percentage changes when you play with small numbers, but given the dire situation at MS/NOK, even any slight growth can’t be taken for granted.

  • RIM, Bada from these tables show negative growth.
  • Symbian shows some growth in USA. 150% Growth. But that’s based on moving from 0.3 to 0.5% only.
  • WP is the only one that does not have negative growth (either zero growth or positive growth).
  • On the whole, WP shows most growth.
  • Android pretty much at least half of these markets.
  • Kantar’s numbers indicate the sales numbers whilst in comparison, statcounter shows browser activity across the whole market (new sales and all existing handsets in use). That’s why in statcounter market share extrapolations, we might see 1.08%, equivalent to 3.7% in terms of sales for the UK (Kantar).

Speaking of statcounter, here’s a look again at Finland so far (9.35% for all devices, so we could extrapolate perhaps at least 30% of sales???)

For the usual context, Finland is a small country – population of only 5M. A large percentage is encouraging but would only convey more relief were we to see it in multiple/larger markets.

China, for instance, the biggest mobile market, has a population of 1.4 BILLION. It shows up 0.56% for WP (constant, slow and steady growth though). Very tiny percentage but potentially more WP sales than Finland.

With no new products on show but continuing threats from opposition, times will be tough for WP/Nokia Lumia until WP8 devices arrive. Even then, WP8 is no guarantee of success for MS/Nokia. Should WP8 catch on, Nokia still find themselves in a difficult fight on the WP turf with HTC and Samsung. Let me stick on my hat of hope again. Things may look dire but there’s still a glimmer of hope that everything falling in to place makes sense for Nokia in the long run.
Cheers spacemodel for the tip.

N9Apps: Opera for Nokia N9 updated

Posted: 11 Jul 2012 01:44 AM PDT

Apparently there’s an update for Opera on the Nokia N9. The above image is just a thumbnail as I couldn’t find Opera on the N9′s Nokia store to check. The Nokia Store link is here, found it from an old post on Opera for N9.

http://store.ovi.com/content/255196

I’ll check it again once my N9 is done updating to PR1.3.

Edmund says this is version 12 where you can change the user agents. This is quite useful to have as some sites instantly bring you to locked mobile sites for certain browsers (and sometimes that prevents you from accessing their website completely).

User Agent:
Can display "Default", "S60″, "Android", "Meego", "Desktop"

Opera keyboard works in all orientations

Meego Keyboard:
-shows up but requires unnecessary step of selecting text field again when you are already editing it.
-When using Meego keyboard, address field will only display correctly when you re-enter edit mode.
-Does not reorientate while in editing, requires manual swiping down of the keyboard to make it disappear.
-Does not work properly in portrait mode

Cannot remember whether it is smoother in terms of scrolling and panning compared to previous version hah. can someone with 2 N9s check it out?

Cheers Morpog and Edmund for the tip!

Accessories: Awesome leather case that turns into a stand for the Nokia Lumia 900

Posted: 11 Jul 2012 01:37 AM PDT

Here’s a really cool accessory I came across at Nokia Lounge and haven’t been able to find until yesterday on Amazon.

This is possibly one of the best leather cases I’ve come across for a phone. Not only is it a full leather case that surrounds your Nokia Lumia 900, flip the cover around and it’s a stand!

The part where the Nokia Lumia 900 inserts appears to be a silicon case. Much better than the usual hard inserts/clips that are 100% prone to breaking. Unless the silicon bit rips off the leather part, this seems to be a case that will be there for the long run.

Amazon link: Nokia Carrying Stand Case for Lumia 900 – Black

When closed I think it looks very stylish.

This is the tilt mechanism. You can see it in action better in the video.

I haven’t got a clearer photo but there’s a cutout at the back for the camera/LED

The case opens up sideways like a book. I didn’t have time to use the case properly (only noticed it on the way out of Nokia Lounge) so I don’t know what it would be like to try and take a phone call. I’m guessing I’d have to flip the flap back but that curvy lip at the edge may be problematic. Has anyone got this case to try that out?

I think this would be fantastic to leave on your desk or the bed side table like this.

  •  Looks nicer than any other leather cases
  • Sturdy, flexible phone insert – won’t be breaking any time soon.
  • Protects the screen from dust/scratching/bumps when in pocket.
  • Works as a stand :D

I’ve got PR1.3 for Nokia N9 :) Impressions on PR1.3?

Posted: 11 Jul 2012 01:34 AM PDT

Some of us have had just slightly over a week on PR1.3 – mine has just popped up and is installing.

How many have you have got the update? Anyone out there still waiting?

What’s your impressions so far from the update of “1000″ improvements.

http://mynokiablog.com/2012/07/03/firmware-update-for-nokia-n9-to-pr1-3-available-1000-improvements-confirmed-at-nokia-v40-2012-21-3/

From what I’ve seen in the comments, there’s plenty of subtle performance changes. Note, after the update it is best to restart the N9.

Quick impressions after toying 30 min´s:
- no major changes traced anywhere so far.
- initially everything was a lot slower, then after a couple of restarts notably quicker than ever before: native browser, firefox, all apps – everything almost blazingly fast. Wow!
- a LOT louder, videos & music at least. Didn´t make any calls yet to see if there is more of that necessary loudness as well.
- (only) after restarts all apps work perfectly. Don´t have inception though.
- maps obviously improved – streets found which weren´t there before.

In short, N9 os up-to-date against most of the competition. Subjective opinions, of course. The survey continues with a happy grin

The update for mine took about 30 minutes and was the first update that didn't wipe out all my apps so thats progress right there. Not really sure whats exactly different in this version. They probably just cleaned up a lot of the code and bugs in this so its basically a 1.3.1 I guess.

RobGee seems to be having problems

I start updating my N9 2 hours ago and it doesn't want to finish..since 1 hour the "nokia" screen (the screen when u turn on the handset) is on the screen. it restarts 100s of times and nothing else..

Ld Sidious mentions inception not working. This post is over a week old and since then inception was updated for PR1.3

I rebooted my phone after being stuck at 90% for enough time. Phone started OK and shows version as 1.3. Inception does not work, but that was to be expected. I'm sure it will be sorted in the near future.

Phone feels very sluggish. Don't know, if that is the result from being stuck at 90%, so hopefully everything got updated. I might do a complete re-flash, when the firmware image file becomes available in Navifirm.

Luckily FasterN9 still works (0.97). I just uninstalled and then reinstalled it and now the phone is smooth once again.

Incognito and JoeyV said it did not fix their Bluetooth problems

Can confirm that… It still skips from time to time while A2DP streaming… Didn't fix the PBAP profile for my car infotainment system either…

DKM fins 1.3 faster and smoother

Update finished and i see is no difference in looks or any added features. The whole OS is much smoother now, Inception wont work after update but all other apps from store and settings remain. Few apps not working so need to reinstall.

Any major changes to the UI or anything, it feels as if the update is for behind the scene fixes.

Over all the OS seems faster and smoother.

Now that some of you guys have had a week with it, any other differences?
