All sorts of recent posts on the internet talk about how Google will treat the Nexus program starting this year. The latest rumors state that multiple Nexus devices from leading manufacturers in the smartphones industry, including Samsung, HTC (Nexus 5), Sony and LG with its Optimus Nexus in quad-core configuration, are preparing a Google Nexus device to be announced this year.

Whether the  rumors about the Nexus devices arriving this year are true or not, we can not say for certain. What we do know is that Google will hold an event at the end of this month, on October 29th. The thematic for the event is the Android OS and it is expected that at least one new device in the Nexus smartphone chategory will be announced.

The Unofficial Galaxy Nexus page on the social network Google Plus speaks in a post about the upcoming Nexus devices. They say that the  younger brothers of the Galaxy Nexus are comming one year after the official launch of the current Nexus smartphone. We are 10 days away from the official Google event and in this period we can expect a lot of rumors about the new Nexus device(s). How many of these are true, we’ll find out soon.

Onyx E Ink Smartphone Demoed, Offers One Week of Battery Life (Video)

Posted: 19 Oct 2012 07:15 AM PDT

E Ink technology has been perceived as something associated only with e-readers and such devices, but now it’s making an entry on the handset market. The upside of this tech is the great readability in tough lighting conditions and its great battery saving abilities, since it draws very little power from the battery. Now there’s a prototype phone from Onyx that adopts this type of screen.

And now let’s get to the flaws: it has lag and can’t display colors. Onyx International is behind the device, that gets demoed below in an interesting 7 minute long clip. YouTube user Charbax compares the device to a Galaxy Nexus outdoor, in a sunny day, showing the advantage of this type of screen. The weird thing here is that the Galaxy Nexus is supposed to be set at maximum brightness, but it doesn’t look like that to me. You should know that using such a display, you will be able to draw so little power, that the handset’s battery would last for a full week.

Rumors say that this prototype phone runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread and inside there’s an ARM Cortex A5 processor, most probably a Qualcomm MSM7227A. The problem here is that the device doesn’t work smoothly and the lag is a big problem. However, when you hear about a week of battery life and only 70 grams of weight, this phone suddenly sounds mint, right? What will you be willing to sacrifice for those attributes?

Oppo Find 5 Is the Thinnest Phablet Out There, at 6.9mm in Thickness; Hands on Shots Here!

Posted: 19 Oct 2012 06:03 AM PDT

Oppo Find 5 was supposed to be the world’s first 1080p 5 inch smartphone, but now it’s joined by the HTC J Butterfly announced this week. However, the Oppo still remains the thinnest phablet on the market, with a waistline of 6.9mm. Its specs are also pretty cool, including a quad core CPU and Android JB.

Oppo Find 5 will have an official unveiling in November and go on sale in 2013, but till then we have some hands on pics in this article. Find 5 relies ona  5 inch Full HD 441 ppi display, with 3 mm bezels. Inside we find the already classic quad core Snapdragon S4 Pro processor, present on 90% of the high end phones and phablets announced in the past month. The CPU is at 1.5 GHz and it’s accompanied by 2 GB of RAM, plus a 12 megapixel rear camera and 2,500 mAh battery.

The product will be sold in 16GB and 32GB versions, priced at about $475 and $523 respectively, obviously without contract. This extremely thin device will get an anodized aluminum body, just like the iPhone 5, one more reason to feel tempted by it.

Newman N2, Chinese Smartphone with Galaxy S III Processor and 13 MP Camera, Crazy Good Price – $240

Posted: 19 Oct 2012 05:52 AM PDT

Looking for a Galaxy S III replacement, that’s actually better in some areas AND cheaper? While that may sound impossible, we’ve seen quite a bunch of tempting smartphones coming from China lately and this is one of them: Newman N2. We’re dealing here with a Chinese handset, that borrows some elements from the Galaxy S III and has a killer price.

The N2 costs 1,499 yuan, translating to about $240 or 183 euro, obviously without contract. For that amount you get a 4.7 inch 720p HD touchscreen and the 1.5 GHz Samsung Exynos 4412 quad core CPU, the same on from the Galaxy S III. There’s also a 13 megapixel rear camera and a 2 megapixel front shooter, as well as 1 GB of RAM and 8 GB of built in storage, plus a 2500 mAh battery.

The device runs Android 4.0 ICS and together with the too little storage constitutes the only (minor) flaws of the product. The N2 can easily compete with any smartphone priced at $300 or $400 nowadays and for this price it’s a killer, provided it ever reaches the West. Its design reminds me of the HTC 8X and 8S for some reason, with that colored band below the screen.
