Video: Skype for WP8 in Depth Demo + People Hub Integration

Posted: 18 Oct 2012 03:06 PM PDT

Somehow a video has appeared on youtube giving a full blown demo of Skype on one of those Lumia Knock-off HTC’s (either the 8X or the 8s not really sure); either way the app itself is integrated into the OS. Running in the background and receiving calls in the usual WP UI, as well as being integrated into the people hub itself, allowing you to call a skype contact through their contact card/tile.

Also note the new People-Hub layout which now runs vertically rather than horizontally, fitting more contacts on the screen and essentially allowing more than the current 8 maximum recent contacts:

Update Available for Lumia 610: Camera Improvements

Lumia 610 Update

There are reports going around the web and Twitter that an update has been released for the Lumia 610, bringing with it camera improvements summed up as:

  • Improved Camera performance
  • Usability and performance improvements

It’s possible this update is a fix for the Exif data mistake on the 610, which had it thinking it was a Nokia 800; but we don’t have a 610 on hand to check out though, so please let us know if you see any changes. overall users are reporting that the camera has some noticeable upgrades in picture quality, so that’s good right?

Apparently the update is live now, with no global restrictions (so it should be available to all; not to sure about carrier locked 610s though); just connect your 610 to Zune on your PC and download.

Nokia Q3 Results published: Losses across the board, Impressive Asha Sales

Posted: 18 Oct 2012 03:47 AM PDT

Nokia released their Q3 results recently, showing losses across the board. It is an improvement compared to their Q2 results (comparing the operating profit between the quarters), which hopefully is a good indication of the future. Its a fairly lengthy report, but the main figures are easy to read;

“6.3 Million Smart Devices” were sold this quarter, compared to Q3 2011 where there were 16.8 million. That is a huge drop! It could have been affected by people not purchasing Lumias due to the lacking update path for WP8. Hopefully this quarter will start to show some promising figures, as Nokia will be focusing solely on Lumia & WP8. In their Press Release, Nokia mention that “approximately 2.9 million” of the 6.3 million “smart devices” were Lumia. Thus, approximately 3.1 million was Symbian and MeeGo (note; both have one main device available compared to 4).

Feature phones were up 8% in comparison to last year’s Q3 results.

NSN profited, while Navteq also suffered losses.

Take a look at Nokia’s press release, as well as the full PDF for more in depth information.

Edit (Ali): Interestingly enough though Nokia’s stock has been on the rise for the days leading up to the announcement:

Closing at just under $3 a share yesterday, however the market itself is yet to open (9:30 AM ET I think)- so we’ll wait and see what the general investors look at the results is; although most people are reporting that  the results have “exceeded expectations“. Also keep in mind that this is the first Quarterly result in a year that is below 1 Billion dollars in loss.

Nokia Lumia 510 sample pic.

Posted: 18 Oct 2012 03:22 AM PDT

The above picture is reported by PocketNow as coming from the yet to be announced Nokia Lumia 510 headed at least for China (and possibly the rest of the world).

We’ve had tweets of supposed samples from the 510 from the past couple of weeks but none of them could be verified. This one shows Nokia Lumia 510′s name in the EXIF data. An aperture of f/2.4 is noted which again is quite good for a budget device.

Pocketnow and crew say that given the price point, it looks to take a great picture.

Symbian in Maintenance mode? Or crossed wires?

Posted: 18 Oct 2012 03:18 AM PDT

There’s some report of Symbian being put into ‘maintenance mode’ as found on the Nokia Developer site, discussing Nokia Drive. There is no such official information from Nokia regarding Symbian’s status other than continued support up until 2016. Lucian from Nokia says that the original message below refers only to the developer platform intended to dismiss a bug report that did not belong in that section as it would not end up in the developer offering.

No one is really expecting a lot to change in Symbian now that Nokia is focused on S40 and WP, but fans still want to know they’ll get the support Nokia promised.

Developer_Nokia 2012-10-11 09:07:52 EEST

Dear developer,

Thank you for your improvement ideas, thus Symbian is in maintenance mode and
no new features will be implement without extremely good reason ( business
case). We have written down your ideas for future development if there is a
chance that new features will be released.

Kind Regards
Nokia Developer support

Marg971 asked

“Do you mean that Nokia will not produce another version for Symbian OS?”

This is followed up by Lucian TomuČ›a from Nokia who attempts to give context:

ltomuta 2012-10-16 10:23:56 EEST
Hi Marg971

We do not comment here on Nokia’s product roadmap. Please follow Nokia’s press
releases for obtaining such information.

The above message refers to Symbian as a developer platform (that’s what Nokia
Developer works with) and dismisses a bug report, or rather feature request,
which does not belong here and has no chance of ever being implemented as part
of the developer offering. Nokia Drive is an application, it is not part of the
developer platform and as such not in the scope of this bug reporting channel.

We are still welcoming bug reports which are affecting the developer platform
(NOT product related bug reports) and we will do our best to fix them, if at
all possible withing the current platform context.

Best regards,
Lucian

Update (Ali): The Develepor tema posted a second reply clarifying the messages above, stating that the matinence mode is for earlier symbian releases (probably the first gen of symbian devices, the same ones that recieved Belle refresh). Regrading the 808:

We do have new feature development for Pureview 808  product

3Developer_Nokia 2012-10-16 15:49:28 EEST
Dear Developer, I would like to make short correction to our previous comments just to avoid potential misunderstandings. When we were talking about maintenance mode we were actually referring to our earlier Symbian releases. We do have new feature development for Pureview 808 product and we periodically evaluate what updates are needed to attract the end users. Your comments will we re-evaluated in these cross-check points. Best Regards Nokia Developer Support

China Mobile Branded Lumia 920T Spotted; This Time in White

Posted: 18 Oct 2012 12:44 AM PDT

Earlier this week we got a first glimpse of what appeared to be a China destined variant of the Lumia 920,a second image of the device has surfaced. This time around with China Mobiles branded logo in the upper left corner (China Mobile is the worlds largest carrier). Is it just me or is this the first time we see a Lumia 920 in white? I can’t recall having seen one before.
