Why I Won’t be Buying a Glossy Lumia 920 (Yellow, Red, White)

Posted: 03 Oct 2012 01:19 PM PDT

If you’ve ever read a single post written by me regarding the Lumia 900 you’re sure to have picked up on my obsessive love with the glossy white Stormtrooper Lumia 900; till this day I stand by the fact that it’s possibly one of the best looking devices out there, if not the best (the darker contrast of the CBD screen gives it a leg-up against the N9 & the Lumia 800). The stormtrooper (and any glossy phone in that fabula form factor) will look amazing-it’s a law of physics, the gloss paint won’t fade or darken over time (unlike the matte- my Cyan 800 got a couple shades darker after a month or two); the problems begin when you set it down on ANY rough surface. The gloss surface is completely smooth, unlike the matte surfaces which have tiny little bumps/roughness on them (which is the reason they darken, dirt and yucky stuff get stuck in those holes); this smoothness means that it’s more prone to little scratches from any object that’s slightly rough.

My Stormtrooper is only outside my pocket when it’s in my hand or on my wooden nightstand, which isn’t really the roughest surface out there (it’s not polished sooth but it’s not an asphalt surface); yet the nightly stay on the nightstand seems to have taken it’s toll. Completely ignoring the horridly scratched backplate (which has hopefully been fixed in the 920 by replacing the stainless steel with that beautiful black ceramic- which I pray isn’t the same as the backplate on the 808 either); the back of the phone is still a pain to look at.

Both the 900/800/N9 as well as the 808′s backplate are scratch-a-holics, the darker shade of the 808′s backplate helps hide the scratches but they’re there, lurking in the darkness.

To be fair the scratches on the phone’s body aren’t visible from afar, or even when your holding the phone at an arms length; but when you bring the phone closer to your eyes and bounce the light off it (more in florescent lights than sunlight), you can definitely see those tiny annoying scratches.

Taking pictures of the scratches is practically impossible, the white-on-white provides absolutely no contrast for any camera to focus on; I tried almost every configuration on the 808 but to no avail, I even tried an external light source while capturing at full zoom. Eventually I took a video (with the LED light on) and captured screen shots off my PC later.

The point is that I can’t stand having such a beautiful phone tarnished by these tiny flaws (HP Reference: I imagine this is how Mrs. Weasley felt when her best looking son was mauled); over-all it hurts to have imperfections on something so close to the heart. So even though I was all set out to get a yellow Lumia 920 I think I’ll be settling for plain old black (seeing how the ash Gray- the only other matte color- looks like a layer of paint primer or a cinder-block).

So am I nitpicking or does anyone else consider this an issue (possibly a deal breaker on Gloss in general?)?

EDIT: I forgot to mention that the reason I don’t use a case on my stormtrooper is cause I didn’t want to cover it’s beauty- the only case I’ve ever used were the silicon covers that came with the 800 & N9; I tried getting a black bumper for the 900 (no back just around the sides- it’s supposed to keep it slightly elevated) but I couldn’t find it; it only comes in Blue and Green which is pretty stupid

Also according to the “what’s in the box” for the Lumia 920- there is no silicon case in box, which is a bit of a disappointment.

Video: Leaked Nokia Lumia 510 hands on

Posted: 03 Oct 2012 04:21 AM PDT

Hot on the heels of the hands on photo is a very quick, short (and blurry) hands on with the Nokia Lumia 510.

This one can be seen still sporting WP7.5, hopefully to be upgraded to 7.8 later (with WP8 style homescreen).

Poll: What colour Nokia Lumia 920 would you choose?

Posted: 03 Oct 2012 03:21 AM PDT

What colour Nokia Lumia 920 would you be interested in? According to our reader poll, over 1000 of you are set on buying the Nokia Lumia 920. 8000 WP fans in another poll also chose the 920 (vs 1k for 8x). 35,000 smartphone fans want the 920 (vs 10k for iPhone 5).

The official colours are a stunning Electric Pikachu Yellow, A robust ruby red, Pearly white, Ash Grey, and sleek obsidian black. Not the official names of course. There may be more in the future – classic Lumia duo of Magenta and the much hinted Cyan?

Note: Nokia Lumia 820 comes in even more colours, possibly unlimited after launch with 3rd party or additional Nokia back plate accessories.

Not to influence anyone but I like the yellow one :p

Nokia Lumia 510 spotted in the wild, 4″, expected around 150USD coming to China by the holidays.

Posted: 03 Oct 2012 02:51 AM PDT

Here’s a hands on of the Nokia Lumia 510 that was spotted about a couple of weeks back.

As known from the last appearance, this phone will sport a not-so low end 4″ display, but an acceptable 4GB memory with 256MB RAM. The lower end 610 which was priced very well for the features it offers has done surprisingly well at Nokia.

The 510 is expected to head to China at a price of around 150USD – about 93GBP by the holidays and globally available by 2013.

Stephen Elop interviewed at All Things D: Nokia not a white box manufacturer

Posted: 03 Oct 2012 02:38 AM PDT

Stephen Elop was just interviewed at All Things D. Here are some key points:

  • Would have liked to have done better with first gen Lumia
  • WP7.5 already set by the time Nokia joined
  • Accepts Nokia did not do enough after launching Lumia 800, not focus on carriers and regions
  • Feels this was done better by focusing the 710 (to t-mobile) and 900 (to At&t)
  • Nokia is not anyone’s white box manufacturer, not disappointed in not being asked to build Surface tablet.

That's just not who we are…I understand why they do Surface, They have long said that the beauty and glory is not being well landed on hardware. They are saying here is the bar; everyone has to be at least this good

http://allthingsd.com/20121002/nokia-ceo-elop-windows-phone-business-hasnt-grown-as-hoped-but-hes-not-changing-course/

  • Elop unaware that Microsoft may be building their own phone. Not that he could say anything even if he knew.
I have no indications they are planning to do their own phone," Elop said. "They can do it if they so choose”
Next up, the interview about Nokia Location and Nokia’s future.
Having a strong position in a location-based platform — the thing that defines mobility — is a very powerful place to be. But we've got to use it wisely

Nokia staying in Espoo HQ, but considers selling and renting to cut maintenance and repair costs?

Posted: 02 Oct 2012 11:41 PM PDT

HS.Fi reports that last year, Nokia’s operating expenses was around 5 Billion Euros. In order to cut some costs, including maintenance and repair of the HQ in Espoo, Nokia is supposedly considering selling AND then Renting out the property.  By renting, Nokia would still use the HQ themselves (i.e. not rent to others). Not sure how much HQ’s expenses are on that regard. The article notes that several large companies have done exactly this because maintenance and ownership is not part of their business.

  •  forest industry companies UPM and Stora Enso did not own at the head office, but they are rented.
  • lifts manufacturer Kone has sold its headquarters.

Peter wanted to clarify further

Before any post is made from this Finnish article, I’ll add some detail:

1) They are only evaluating if that would be cost-efficient for Nokia
2) Repair & Maintenance of buildings and owning property costs are high and either one of those are not part of Nokia’s core competence.
3) Nokia would continue to use the building as their HQ, only now renting them instead of owning them

4) This is a trend happening in Finland, many other big companies in recent years have done the same

There is absolutely no plans to move HQ abroad.

More belt tightening. :/ Any news on whether Nokia are gonna temporarily stop the dividends in order to weather out a few more quarters?

Cheers jiipee and Peter L for the tip.

Belle FP2 temporarily pulled due to issues

Posted: 02 Oct 2012 11:28 PM PDT

For those wondering what happened to their update to FP2 that began rolling out yesterday, it got pulled as there’s some issue with it:

Hi all,

just a quick heads up. We’ve heard about some issues after the update and now decided to take the update files off our servers until we have investigated the case.

I’ll announce it here once the update is available again, but for the moment please don’t worry if your phone doesn’t get the update.

Thanks!

Best regards,

Yvonne

Video: Nokia Lumia 920 – Time to #switch (Cartoon)

Posted: 02 Oct 2012 11:21 PM PDT

Here’s an interesting ‘advert’ for the Nokia Lumia 920. It looks like it was created by the folks from Cartoon Network (it was just yesterday that CN celebrated their 20th Anniversary) but most likely coincidental.

Translated text (automated)

Gray was yesterday in gray – who confesses color has more of life! Lifts you from the drab mass of fruit junkies and discovered the smartphone class. The Nokia Lumia 920 and the Nokia Lumia 820 are available in four great colors and can be anything your heart desires – more than many highly acclaimed smartphone!
