Weekend Watch: Symbian Xeon^4 Based on Belle Refresh on Nokia N8

Posted: 06 Oct 2012 04:20 PM PDT

In this video we see an update to the Xeon^4 custom firmware theme on Belle Refresh for Nokia N8. It’s looking rather slick, no? The animations aren’t so jarring and nausea inducing as previous custom firmwares have been (the ones with randomly spinning screens?!)

Weekend Read: Nokia 808 vs iPhone 4S vs GSIII vs HTC OneX

Posted: 06 Oct 2012 04:00 PM PDT

You may have had your fill of Nokia 808 PureView camera comparisons. All the major blogs have already crowned this as the undisputed camera king, both in direct and blind camera tests (to avoid bias) and the 808 proves itself as a performer. It really does produce super high quality images far superior to even several high end dedicated pocket digicams, let alone camera phones.

Introductions aside here’s another comparison post, with the iPhone 4S, SGSIII and HTC One X.

Is it me or do the 808′s pics look rather hazy for some reason? That’s not what we’ve seen before right?

Cheers Aymen for the tip!

Video: Optical Image Stabilisation demo on Nokia Lumia 920 (at&t)

Posted: 06 Oct 2012 10:51 AM PDT

It was possibly a lot clearer in the first video this morning (the clip seems to be played back on the device), but here’s another session showing a demo of optical image stabilisation (close up) on the Nokia Lumia 920. Notice the immediate change in the viewfinder when the OIS is off and when it is activated with half press.

I can imagine OIS pairing up quite excellently with PureView V1. Think stable shots at the telephoto/zoom end. On Friday, whilst everyone was attempting to take potato pictures of the lecture slides with their free iPad, I used the Nokia 808 PureView. So much clearer, but when I zoomed in, the fine text was not as clear as it could have been if I had a tripod.

Note, this is an AT&T branded 920.

Paul Thurott: Explaining Nokia’s Lumia Exclusivity Strategy

Posted: 06 Oct 2012 10:45 AM PDT

Paul Thurott’s blogpost linked below attempts to explain Nokia’s rationale for having carrier exclusives for their new Nokia Lumia devices. I can see both sides of the argument, though I’m one to wish things weren’t exclusive to one carrier.

http://www.winsupersite.com/blog/supersite-blog-39/windows-phone-8/explaining-nokias-lumia-exclusivity-strategy-144433

Apparently the sales of the 900 went better because of carrier exclusivity as opposed to the 800 which wasn’t carrier exclusive. But wait a minute, the Nokia Lumia 800 wasn’t even on a carrier in the US. Was it?

Paul Thurott doesn’t actually agree with Nokia’s strategy either. Neither do a lot of MNB readers leaving comments or folks commenting on other blogs. What about the networks they’re on?

Exclusivity may have temporarily worked for iPhone in a time when it was a very unique/different device. Now the iPhone and its competitors are everywhere on pretty much all networks. I can only see it working if the carrier puts significant resources into trying to sell your product with you.

Rebuilding relationships with carriers by getting a flagship Nokia on the network was a good first step. But don’t we need more now? What’s going on with Verizon/Sprint? Where are my Nokia Lumia for Verizon?

Video: Nokia Music Presents – Janelle Monáe – performing Cold War at Social Media Week

Posted: 06 Oct 2012 10:27 AM PDT

Here’s a video from Nokia US. I think it’s a part of their Nokia Music presentation at Social Media week (the video only went live now). They had Janelle Monae performing.

There’s also a blogpost at NokConv from a couple of weeks ago

Nokia 808 PureView wins Best Camera, Nokia Lumia 800 wins Best design at Mobile Choice Consumer Awards 2012

Posted: 06 Oct 2012 10:20 AM PDT

This made me laugh. Not because the Nokia 808 PureView would obviously win the best camera price for Mobile Choice consumer awards, but that PhoneArena says ‘it narrowly edged out SGSIII’. Narrowly? Narrowly? By narrow you mean a gap the size of the Grand Canyon, right? We were talking solely about their camera performance, no?

http://www.mobilechoiceuk.com/News/22806/Best_mobile_phone_of_2012_Mobile_Choice_Awards.aspx

Somehow 808 didn’t get the best video (maybe it was for playback?) as that went to the HTC OneX.

The best design did NOT go to Apple (it couldn’t really go to any other manufacturer…) but to Nokia of course. This continuously award winning design first seen publicly on the Nokia N9 and of course on the first Lumia (800) has been winning over hearts of Nokia fans and Nokia naysayers in terms of design. The combination of curved black screen that swoops into the unibody polycarbonate body which of course comes in bright vivid colours. No wonder HTCrap decided to clone the Nokia Lumia series so fragrantly!

The 800 apparently was a runner up for best smartphone. If the 800 can get that far, then so much more chance for the 920, eh?

Weekend Read: GeneralTheDestroyer on BBC’s Russel Howard’s Good News

Posted: 06 Oct 2012 03:55 AM PDT

I’m in the middle of some Uni work, BBC iPlayer on the side for background noise when I hear on Russell Howard’s Good News programme, a very familiar voice.

GeneralTheDestroyer?! Did a youtube video spontaneously load? Nope, GeneralTheDestroyer was on the BBC programme (3rd October) being quoted contrasted against some die hard iPhone fans, with his usual colourful language, “iPhone 5 is a f*** piece of s***!”.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b01n2184/Russell_Howards_Good_News_Series_7_Episode_1/

Love him or hate him, GeneralTheDestroyer is one vocal guy that knows what he likes regarding tech. Fortunately, he’s a big fan of Nokia things. Nokia Lumia, Nokia 808 PureView, and now Nokia Lumia 920.

Russell Howard’s Good News is a pretty popular show in the UK, kudos to GTD for being on UK tv :) . I’ve not watched the full episode or even the latest one so GTD might make multiple appearances (as Russell enjoy’s long running jokes in between his episodes, maybe they’ll even talk about his crazy Nokia obsession :D ). Hopefully, since Russell’s show is pretty much a snapshot of Reddit, he’ll pick up on some of the ridiculous tumblr Apple maps stuff.

Weekend Watch: 13 minute hands on with the Nokia Lumia 920 (in French) #ElectricPikachuYellow

Posted: 06 Oct 2012 01:55 AM PDT

This is a hands on of the Nokia Lumia 920 (electric pikachu yellow!).

The sharp screen can be appreciated here by zooming into the small text and still seeing text that is readable. For those with poor vision, WVGA (and even nHD) is fine, but there will also be others who can appreciate high pixel densities, even beyond the magical ‘Retina’ level.

Weekend Watch: 11 Minute Nokia Lumia 820 hands on (French)

Posted: 06 Oct 2012 01:55 AM PDT

Here’s a hands on of the Nokia Lumia 820 (in French) lasting 11 minutes long. And they’re actually allowed to look at the whole phone. I’m not sure if this is WP8 or WP7.8, I can’t see much has changed. It slightly worries me that MS still has no idea about how to display a calendar. Perhaps with the extra pixels in the 920, those with better eyes will be able to see the microscopic entries in full calendar view – but what about 820?

Everything is otherwise super fast and fluid.
