Microsoft Unveils Windows Phone 8; Features Kids Corner, Rooms, Data Sense and More! Handsets Coming in November! (Video)

Posted: 29 Oct 2012 12:52 PM PDT

While Google couldn’t come through with its event because of the Sandy hurricane, Microsoft stuck to its big conference and unveiled Windows Phone 8. They showcased a bunch of new features and finally announced all the models available in USA and their prices. Among the new features unveiled there were Kid’s Corner and Rooms, plus Data Sense.

Windows Phone 8 devices like Nokia Lumia 822 or Samsung Ativ Odyssey will go on sale in November on AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon in USA, plus more carriers and retailers all over the world. Terry Myerson, corporate VP of Windows Phone at Microsoft said that he can’t wait for the consumers to meet Windows Phone 8. Live tiles define the experience yet again and can be customized and arranged according to the users’ preferences. 20 bright color choices are available for tiles, including the likes of cobalt, crimson and lime.

The Windows hone Store now offers 120k apps and you even get fresh new titles like the upcoming Angry Birds Star Wars, Where’s My Water and brand new Facebook and Twitter versions. A bunch of children were present on stage for the sake of demoing the Kid’s Corner feature, a brand new function in Windows Phone. Kid’s Corner allows parents to hand over the handset to the little one, without having to fret about missed calls, redirected emails, delete pics, unapproved app purchases or adult content being opened. They can activate a specialized place on the phone for kids to play and have fun with, that even includes custom Start screens.

Then there’s the new feature Rooms, that allows you to create private groups of people who have Windows Phone 8. I’m talking about family members, best friends or colleagues, all easier to organize and connect with. You can chat via Rooms, share calendars, shopping lists or pics. There was also a new function called Data Sense, that was showcased today. This one conserves data allowance and also compresses web images, to save your precious bucks when using a data plan. There’s also a live tile to let you know about your data limit.

There’s also a new Skype app available, coming soon to Windows Phone 8 and allowing you to receive and make Skype calls in the form of a regular phone call. New wallet and NFC technologies were promised and I really can’t wait to see all of these in action in November on the likes of Nokia Lumia 920 and HTC 8X. Verizon carries HTC 8X for $199.99 on contract and Nokia Lumia 822 priced at $99.99. AT&T carries the Lumia 920, 820 and HTC 8X, while T-Mobile has the HTC 8X and Lumia 810.

To date it was not yet clear what resolution will be delivered with the display of the 4.65-inch device. Recently however some GLBenchmark scores with the device surfaced and we can reveal more about the hardware configuration. The device will be offering an HD – 1280×720 pixels resolution display and runs Android 4.1.1. It is powered by a dual-core CPU clocked at 1.5Ghz, as opposed to the quad-core configuration found on the Galaxy S III.

The Galaxy Premier passed NCC certification just a few days ago and is expected to hit the market pretty soon. The phone has been spotted on a bus station ad in Guangzhou, China in an ad to the latest Galaxy Series lineup. The Premier is listed as model numbers – I9260 and I9268.

Google Employee Posts Photos Taken with the Nexus 3

Posted: 29 Oct 2012 07:16 AM PDT

Though the Google event that was supposed to take place today has been delayed, that dosen’t stop the pieces of info and rumors from spreading on the internet. We expect that Google will announce at least two new devices at their Android Playground event. One is a smartphone, made by LG and called the Nexus 4. The other one is the Nexus 10 – tablet made by Samsung.

For the past years we’ve seen 3 Nexus smartphones launched by Google in collaboration with HTC at first, and the Samsung. This year we expect the forth to arrive, this time made by LG and suggestively called the Nexus 4. While we await for the date for the rescheduled event to be announced, an interesting fact emerged on the Internet.

Photos taken with a device called Nexus 3 have been posted by a Google Employee on his Google+ page. The photos have been taken at the resolution of 2048 x 1536, in an odd 4:3 pixels aspect ratio. It is rumored that the Nexus 3 might be manufactured by Samsung and represent the Korean’s manufacturer’s smartphone for Google. Samples with the Nexus 10 tablet also surfaced in a similar manner a while back.

Nokia Lumia 822 Renders Leaked, Verizon’s Lumia 820 Pictured Here

Posted: 29 Oct 2012 04:45 AM PDT

Nokia Lumia 822 is the same thing as the Lumia 820, but in the Verizon version. The device was leaked in a hands on picture yesterday and now good old @evleaks published a render of the handset, looking very official in black, gray and white. The phone will support wireless charging and it will get a special charging pad accessory.

Rumors say that there will be no swappable shells for the device, so you’ll have to settle with these colors. Last I heard, this smartphone was priced at $99 on contract, $100 less than the HTC 8X, for example. You should expect this product to hit Verizon in early November and it should come with LTE, Nokia Maps, Nokia Drive and a 4.3 inch ClearBlack Display.

It also has an 8 megapixel camera at the back, a dual core Snapdragon S4 1.5 GHz processor and a battery that offers 330 hours of standby and 8 hours of talking. NFC and Bluetooth 3.0 round up the features list, together with 16 GB of storage. Are you getting one? Or saving up for the Surface Phone?

Samsung Sales Spiking, S III Explodes and Galaxy Note II is Also Expected to Rock

Posted: 29 Oct 2012 02:05 AM PDT

Samsung recently discussed with CNET, detailing the sales of the Galaxy S III and the upcoming Galaxy Note II, that should be available in USA any minute now. Interestingly enough, the Samsung Galaxy S III had 4 of its 5 best selling weeks in USA after the iPhone 5 was launched, according to the Samsung officials.

The idea here is that consumers waited to see what the iPhone 5 was about, weren’t impressed and went with the Galaxy S III. Samsung expects to continue the good trend in USA with the Galaxy Note II, especially since they already started promotions  and events dedicated to their latest products. One such event was the party on Wednesday, that featured a performance by Kanye West, among others. Samsung pulled a big party to let everyone know about the Galaxy Note II, the 5.5 inch quad core phablet unveiled at IFA 2012 at the end of August and only now available in the States.

And Samsung’s strategy is paying off, with a record quarterly profit of $7.4 billion, mostly due to the Galaxy line of smartphones. Apple may be ahead in the handset area, but not by very much, posting an $8.2 billion profit. The South Korean company claims it has sold over 10 million units of the Galaxy Note in the first 9 months after its launch internationally. The thing is that in USA the device debuted earlier this year, so it had a delay of a few months compared to Europe. It was sold by AT&T first and later by T-Mobile.

However, this time the phablet will be sold by all 4 US carriers and a few regional ones, so impressive numbers are expected. The product goes for about $299.99 on a 2 year contract, so it’s actually not that cheap. However, people who like phablets will spend the money to get it.
