Nokia Ready to Sell Vertu for 200 Million Euros

Posted: 30 Apr 2012 02:17 PM PDT

A report from Financial Times shows that Nokia might be preparing to sell the Vertu luxury branch for around 200 million euro. Last I heard, the Finns contacted a Goldman Sachs advisor to explore some options regarding Vertu and that happened in December 2011. Nokia is closer to a deal now, according to insiders.

Among the buyers of Vertu we find equity group Permira, that invested in companies such as Hugo Boss. As you already know, Vertu makes the kind of phones that football players and billionaires purchase, covered with gold, diamonds and… Symbian sadly. The value in itself is in the Vertu brand, not the phones. Supposedly the annual revenue of this branch is around 200 to 300 million euro, although Nokia never discloses that. Right now nothing is sure, so the sale of the Vertu may even not be sold.

In other news, Nokia’s stock was downgraded to junk status by S & P, so they need a cash infusion badly and the one promised by Microsoft doesn’t seem like enough. What else will Nokia sell in the process? Will Nokia Siemens also be a victim of the hunt for cash?

LG Cloud Officially Unveiled, Aims at Being Solid iCloud Rival With TV, PC Integration

Posted: 30 Apr 2012 12:40 PM PDT

LG has just launched its very own cloud service, predictably called LG Cloud, for now in beta phase. The service is the perfect way to share photos, music and video between devices in the same LG ecosystem. These include PCs, smartphones, TVs and tablets.

The appeal here comes from the 3D devices that are able to capture 3D content and show in on the screens of tridimensional TVs. LG Cloud goes against the iCloud and the rumored service that Samsung is supposed to be preparing under the S-Cloud moniker. The service brings real time transcoding, that makes content playable in the ideal format for the device it’s shared to. You get a free account with 2GB of space from LG and the company also offers 5GB for free for new buyers of LG devices and the first 6 months will also give them 50GB of storage.

LG will at some point also offer extra storage for pay, but the price haven’t been unveiled just yet. The service is in free beta mode at first and it will be available starting May 1st in South Korea and the USA, with a wider launch following in the first half of 2013. Native clients are limited right now to Android 2.2 or newer handsets, Windows XP and Windows 7, but there’s also a web interface compatible with most devices on the market.

Samsung Galaxy S III Leaks Again, 4.8 Inch Screen Once Again Appears

Posted: 30 Apr 2012 01:51 AM PDT

This time we’ve got a Samsung Galaxy S III leak that includes a ruler placed next to the phone. Said ruler allows us to calculate some of its measurements. The pic was posted online by source Knowyourmobile and as you can see the rounded form factor of the past days has been kept and the Home button is there as well.

Over the past weeks, the screen size of the latest Galaxy S model has been changing in rumors, from 4.65 inches to 4.7 or 4.8 inches. We’ll know for sure what the real one is on May 3rd, when Samsung has a launch event scheduled in London. According to the image above the handset measures 130mm, but if you look closer the zero market of the ruler is a bit above the lower end of the device. So, we’re dealing with a 135mm long handset with a 10.5 mm tall display and a width of 5.9 cm.

This means that the diagonal should be around 12 cm, translated to 4.74, about the same size as the diagonal of the HTC One X. All of these calculations are strictly based on the ruler placed next to the phone and we have no idea if the image is real or not, although it looks pretty genuine. Other things confirmed so far are the quad core Exynos CPU on board and the name Galaxy S III…
