Nokia N8 Vs. iPad3/New iPad: Video Quality Comparison

Posted: 28 May 2012 05:55 PM PDT

N8 Vs. iPad 3

Earlier today I entered an “Apple Store” for the first time in my life; walked up to a nice salesman called Tom and asked him for an iPad 3; don’t worry I’m not defecting to team Apple but in my opinion the iPad is one product that till now hasn’t been matched in Design or function. The main reason I purchased an iPad was I grew sick of my touchpad (running android) and wanted something more useful, the other major factor that influenced my purchase was Facetime- My mom stopped using Skype the day she got an iPhone, forcing me to facetime her off my brothers iPhone everytime I wanted to speak to her.

I honestly had no idea that the iPad 3 supported 1080p recording (as it only packs a semi-decent 5mp camera) but apparently it does; I understand it’s unfair to compare two “genres” of devices, let alone one that can’t record 1080p to one that can. but for the sake of finding out which is better I did (mainly because I needed to know which is better for filming my unboxings and reviews).

Just two quick points about the iPad:

  1. The video capture angle is alot less than that of the N8; meaning that it ends up filming objects that are further away (as if it’s constantly zoomed)
  2. Secondly the AutoFocus on the iPad is REALLY REALLY good (and the tap to focus is also quite effective).

Special thanks to ROCK for the awesome intro animations!

iPad Sample (remember to view in 1080p):

N8 sample (Also switch up to 720p- please and thankyou)

*at some places the sound faded out cause of the awkward position I was holding the phone/tablet in meant that I was covering up the microphone.

Honestly for the time being I’m going to start filming with the iPad; but make no mistake the iPad is by no means a Camera; it’s over 10 inches, very unwieldy and if I ever see anyone filming with it in public I WILL point and laugh, but it takes good videos, and I think that’s the point. Hopefully once I get an 808 that’ll be my new base camera as I expect it to stop all over the iPads recording abilities.

*I got the white iPad for the sole purpose of matching it up with my stormtrooper once I get one :D

Stormtrooper White Lumia 900 (Non-US Model) Unboxing

Posted: 28 May 2012 04:18 PM PDT

I’m not exactly sure what the “official” name for the non-US version of the 900 is (back at MWC they were calling it the Rest-of-World or ROW); anyways my annoying friend Sam :P who I met at MWC got his hands on a white version and spent most of the unboxing video teasing me about it; since I haven’t gotten one yet.  No matter; hopefully soon enough I’ll have my own enjoy the video guys: (also note that this version comes with headphones unlike the US version)-

(I was actually planning on holding off from posting any of these till I got my own and filmed it but oh well..)

Waterproof nano coating for future Nokia phones?

Posted: 28 May 2012 04:00 PM PDT

Apparently, Nokia will be making future phones/Lumias waterproof.  Well that’s what’s going around the blogosphere now anyway. What the actual quote was:

Nano technology lets us do it. Superhydrophobic technology makes water bounce, it stops it, rolls it off the device and leaves it water impregnant, that's the magic, that's what we're going to bring to the party

Odd. It seems to be pretty much what Nokia said before at Nokia World what the intentions of this technology was. Furthermore this was one of several things Stephen Elop had been hinting at. Elop said he saw amazing technology in Nokia’s labs that he was going to make sure make it to market instead of staying amazing behind closed doors. He hinted at the 808 PureView, remember? He said that amazing as the N8 is, it was a mere fraction of what Nokia could do in the labs – and boy, did Nokia bring out some magic from the labs with the 808. Elop also mentioned about a phone that had a coating which could be submerged in water and is waterproof.

We don’t know how long it will be for Nokia to bring this to market. Nokia has previously demoed a part of this technology in the Nokia 700 – water droplets bouncing off the display. However, full submersion has not been shown publicly yet.

Lumiappaday #195: Pirate Cat demoed on the Nokia Lumia 800

Posted: 28 May 2012 03:23 PM PDT

I saw Pirate Cat demoed the other day by Daniel Rubino of Pocketnow/ and he looked to be really amused by this game! It’s also free until June 1st – go head and download even if just to try.

It has a classic black and white cartoon style about it. The game play involves this pirate cat who seems to be flying shooting down birds to take their feathers. Move left and right by tilting. Attacking the bids by aiming and firing the sling shot. If you fail to catch feathers your ‘life’ bar depletes. If totally empty you will crash out of the sky. But on the way if you catch enough feathers, you can resume flight again. There may be more aspects to the game but i haven’t encountered them yet (only briefly played it for the demo)

Developer Blurb:

Get the game for free before June 1st!

The captain found THE map, but it does not really lead to the expected location… Actually, it takes to the moon, and he thought that sending you there to dig up the treasure would be a great idea.

You are the Pirate Cat, and you have to reach the moon by using your brand new handmade wings, hitting birds and collecting feathers to keep flying. Try to reach the moon before the break of dawn!

Video: Older 808 proves Carla is Belle FP1

Posted: 28 May 2012 09:26 AM PDT

Over the past week or so there’s been a lot of commotion regarding the rumored “Scrapping of Carla”; which was then proven and confirmed to be gibberish as we learned that Carla was renamed as Belle FP1 (from the original leak of Carla we all knew that  it would only carry minor UI changes to Belle without any ground breaking changes (mainly new widgets)- which is exactly what Belle FP1 carried with it. Here’s a video of a pre-release 808 showing that Software version 112.whatever which is now known as Belle FP1 was indeed once upon a time called Carla; it is worth noting that the software date here is January 28th 2012 (just one month before the MWC unveil)- while the devices we got to play around with were dated Feb. 20th 2102; so it would appear that the ditching of the Carla name was a very short notice thing occurring somewhere between  Jan 28th and Feb 20th.

Here’s a Noob question; I may be way off but I understand that the pureview has a dedicated processor to control it’s imaging capabilities; wouldn’t that make it the first Multi-processor/Core Symbian phone? And as rumored the final Symbian update “Donna” at the time; would be for Mulit-core phones? -Can anyone explain if what I’m saying has any basis?

T hanks for the tip Jill

N9 users get put on the map

Posted: 28 May 2012 01:00 AM PDT

I’ve pushed this back to Monday as there’s a fair few things going on this weekend.

MeeGo Experts posted a tweet last week, linking to their article on “Positioning N9 users around the world”.

The concept is quite simple actually. Using Google Maps, N9 (and N950) owners post their location on this custom map, with the title of the “landmark” being their device (eg. Nokia N9 Unicorn 64GB). Apparently the idea came from a member of TMO. Here is what the described the idea as.

Here is a map where you can place your N9s.
Let's see how many people checks-in. Let's try to be accurate and use some tag to identify your device.

http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UT…1f019b930e8621

To add your location, click on edit on the left panel and add a placemark where you are. then click save and your position should be there.

Leave a comment in this post too saying from where you posted it.

So all you N9 users out there, get involved!

Batman etched Nokia Lumia 900 special edition coming

Posted: 28 May 2012 12:31 AM PDT

Last year as part of The Dark Knight Rises preview event, a select set of super lucky people were given a special edition Batman logo etched Nokia Lumia 800. This phone was complete with a batman etched case, Batman packaging, TDKR wallpaper and firmware specifically stating it’s Batman TDKR. Only 40 were made and the only way you could buy one is if they someone ended up on eBay.

News now is that Nokia will be making more – more that the public can buy this time. This will be the Nokia Lumia 900 TDKR, complete with etching, wallpapers etc. This will be first on sale in the UK, France and some other European countries. We saw some TDKR branding for Canadian retailers but that was unrelated to the etched special edition versions.

When precisely? In the coming weeks apparently.
