LG Optimus L7 Available in Europe for as Low as 319 Euro Unlocked

Posted: 03 May 2012 03:38 PM PDT

LG Optimus L7 is part of the many devices that LG unveiled back at MWC 2012. It’s part of the new and refreshed L series, that features a squared design, that you’ll also find on the LG Optimus Vu model, for example. Although the L7 is the most powerful device in its series, it’s difficult to consider it a high end smartphone.

LG Optimus 4X HD is a truly high end device, courtesy of that quad core processor and 720p display on board. Anyway, back to the LG Optimus L7, this model runs Android 4.0 ICS in a customized version and it packs a 4.3 inch IPS screen with 800 x 480 pixel resolution and a single core 1 GHz Cortex A5 processor. 512MB of RAM and 4GB of storage complete the specs list, as well as a microSD card slot and 5 megapixel camera with LED flash. The battery of this model is a 1,700 mAh unit, a pretty decent one actually.

Pricing will depend on the region, but it should be around the 319 value, obviously without contract. It could even be cheaper, so it’s a solid purchase if you’re not a quad core fan. Keep an eye on local European carriers in the following days, since they might start offering it.

Samsung Galaxy S III Versus Galaxy Nexus (Video)

Posted: 03 May 2012 02:56 PM PDT

It’s time for the mighty comparisons to take place, starting with a battle between the just announced Samsung Galaxy S III and the first 720p phone ever, Galaxy Nexus. Both models are made by Samsung and they are/were top of the line when they came out. Now let’s see if there’s any real difference between them and for that we have a comparison video done by Android Central.

The first thing you notice is that the screen of the Galaxy Nexus is actually superior, since it offers the same 720p resolution on the same Super AMOLED screen, but on a 4.65 inch diagonal, unlike the 4.8 inch diagonal of the Galaxy S III. So, the pixel density battle is won by the Galaxy Nexus, but the processor duel is certainly won by the quad core 1.4 GHz Exynos on the Galaxy S III, I’ll you that right now. The TI OMAP 4460 dual core 1.2 GHz can’t compete with that, so sorry last year’s Nexus!

Moving on we have the same 1GB of RAM on both models and a bonus storage for the Galaxy S III: microSD card slot, 16/32/64GB of internal memory, while the Nexus from 2011 has to deal with a mere 16GB of storage and that’s it. Both models are able to run or already run Android 4.0.4 ICS and on the connectivity side they’re equal, with NFC, LTE and 3G with 21 Mbps speeds. At the back of the Galaxy S III we find a superior 8 megapixel camera with zero shutter lag, great burst mode, video stabilizer, 1080p 30 fps video capture and other goodies, that’s a bit better than the 5MP shooter from the other Samsung model.

And finally, the battery is a 2.100 mAh unit on the Galaxy S III and a 1.750 mAh on the older Nexus phone. So drawing the line I’d say that the Galaxy S III wins the battle, but it’s still a bit uglier than the sexy Galaxy Nexus. What do you think?

Samsung Galaxy S III officially Unveiled: 4.8 inch HD Display, 8MP camera, Quad Core CPU

Posted: 03 May 2012 02:02 PM PDT

Merely two hours ago Samsung announced officially the Galaxy S III flagship smartphone, that we were all waiting for impatiently. The device is welcome among a wave of quad core phones, like the LG Optimus 4X, HTC One X and Huawei’s Quad model. Also, it appears that 90% of the rumors surrounding the new Galaxy S were real.

The phone really is 4.8 inch in diagonal, it does support HD resolution and it has an 8 megapixel camera. The design is very rounded and plasticky and the Home button has been enlarged a bit. This handset is the one codenamed I9300 and it offers HSDPA 21 Mbps connectivity, LTE (where available) and a 4.8 inch HD Super AMOLED screen with Gorilla Glass protection. The phone measures 8.6 mm in thickness, weighs 133 grams and relies on a quad core 32 nm Exynos 4212 quad core processor at 1.4 GHz.

There’s a Mali 400 MP GPU in the mix on the graphics side and 1GB of RAM also available. Android 4.0.4 is the OS of choice and you also get a microSD card slot, 16/32/64 GB of storage and an 8 megapixel camera at the back, with the ability to do 1080p video recording at 30 fps. The camera has a LED flash, touch focus, face detection, image stabilization and is accompanied by a 1.9 MP front videocall cam. Back to the connectivity, we get WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, NFC, microUSB, GPS and FM radio.

The battery inside is a respectable 2100 mAh unit, certainly more potent than the one on the Galaxy Nexus. Other things worth mentioning are the Human and Nature approaches that Samsung took for this phone. The focused its design and features on the use by Humans and its look on elements from Nature. They promise zero camera shutter lag and also offer a very cool feature that allows one to resize and more around the screen a video while they watch it an want to do something else. That’s called Pop Up Play.

We’ve also got the S Beam combo of WiFi Direct and NFC, for an ultra quick transfer and the handset is able to recognize the user’s voice commands and gestures. Entering a contact windows and lifting the phone to your ear will result in you calling that person. How cool is that? The phone also has a kickass voice command function, that allows you to do anything, from taking photos, to showing the weather, calling a person and powering up the screen. One more thing: the phone debuts in Europe on May 29th and it will be taken on a promotional tour through major cities in the world. It’s also the official phone of the 2012 Summer Olympics. So, are you getting one? I think it’s fugly…

Huawei M660 Budget Android Phone Features Portrait QWERTY Keyboard

Posted: 03 May 2012 05:31 AM PDT

The BlackBerry format is getting old, that’s for sure, but some companies still use the combo between QWERTY keyboard and touchscreen. One of them is Nokia and now Huawei has a fresh product with a touch display and a portrait keyboard that looks quite comfortable. Meet the Huawei M660:

This model was recently uncovered courtesy of Bluetooth certification and we know that the Huawei M660 has a 3.2 inch screen and runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread. It’s supposed to launch on MetroPCS and its format reminds me a bit of the Motorola Pro, that actually had a very nice keyboard, because of domed buttons. Sadly, since this model is MetroPCS material, odds are that we’ll never see it in Europe or Asia. The question is: is it worth it to purchase a device with a physical keyboard nowadays?

Virtual keyboards are evolving, everyone’s launching 4.7 inch or 4.8 inch smartphones, so there’s enough room to type accurately and with all the cool typing assist out there, you’ll never get spelling wrong. As far as the Huawwei M660 goes,t his budget phone doesn’t have any more specs leaked. If I were to speculate, I’d say it comes with a 1GHz (or close) CPU, 512MB RAM and 2GB of storage, plus microSD.

Windows Phone Apollo Could be Unveiled Next Month, During Windows Phone Developer Summit

Posted: 03 May 2012 03:46 AM PDT

Microsoft’s next big thing is Windows Phone 8, that’s for sure, but the OS codenamed Apollo could be demoed sooner than you think. It appears that on June 20th the Windows Phone Developer Summit will kick off and this event may be the one introducing WP8 to us all.

It will be a crazy month of June, with Google’s I/O event at the end of the month, potentially with an Android 5.0 showcasing. Apple will also have the WWDC 2012 event in June, with an iOS 6.0 demo most likely and then there’s Microsoft and WP8… Imagine getting to know 3 new operating systems for mobile in a mere month. Crazy, right? As far as Apollo goes, this next version of WP will be built on the same kernel as Windows 8, according to people in the know, so developers writing apps for laptops and tablets can take the code and reuses it on handsets.

Don’t get too excited about seeing Windows Phone 8 at the Developer Summit, since it will be months till it actually comes on a device. We’ll maybe have a shot at seeing some new Nokia prototypes, especially since some of them have already been found in various site profiles. I’m talking about those Nokia WP8 devices that visit certain tech websites and leave a trail behind. So, they’re out there and we could see them in June!

Pantech Vega Racer 2 is Now Official: 4.8 inch 720p Device With Ceramic Coating

Posted: 03 May 2012 02:41 AM PDT

Well folks, this is as close as you’re going to get to the Samsung Galaxy S III at least for a few more hours! Meet the Pantech Vega Racer 2, a device with specs that are very close to the ones rumored for Galaxy S III. We’re dealing with a 4.8 inch 720p LCD device with ceramic coating and LTE.

This model will debut in Korea next week, with Android 4.0 and launching on all 3 major Korean cellular carriers. Pantech also offers a 2,020 mAh battery and the already famous Snapdragon S4 MSM8960 processor. This combo should give the user about 9.5 hours of talk time and 245 hours of standby, with LTE also on board. And all of this technology is crammed inside a 9.35mm thick handset, which is not that bad by today’s standards. The device weighs 133 grams and comes with voice recognition for numerous tasks.

What’s cool is that you can even take pictures simply by commanding the Pantech Vega Racer 2 via voice. The case is not all ceramic, it’s merely ceramic coated and hopefully we won’t get the issues with chipping that the HTC One S had weeks ago. What we don’t have here is the price of this model and also the type of technology that the screen uses. Here’s to hoping for Super AMOLED…

Samsung White LTE Windows Phone AT&T Model Gets Pictured

Posted: 03 May 2012 02:11 AM PDT

We’ve been hearing about the Samsung SGH-i667, also known as the Mandel for a while now, as a Windows Phone model that was always incoming and never… really coming. The device passed Bluetooth certification in January and then it passed the FCC in March, but since then no word about it.

And now here it is again, as a LTE Windows Phone with a glossy white back, as depicted above. This is a rounded phone with a pretty look, a camera with flash at the back and a metallic edge at the top. The second image below is a screen capture of the handset connected to the Zune desktop, showing the device’s name. The AT&T logo is clearly shown on the handset, so it’s obvious what carrier will sell this model. Also, it seems that the phone will offer 8 GB of storage, with 5.61 available, which is really a bummer.

Since Windows Phone devices don’t usually have microSD slots, there’s only one explanation for the low amount of storage on the phone: it’s a midrange/lower end unit for AT&T. It could also be a relative or a modified twin of the Focus Flash, also codenamed i667. Is Samsung holding back from releasing more Windows Phone units, as they expect for WP8?

BlackBerry 10 Shows a Glimpse at Its Features, Great Predictive Keyboard (Video)

Posted: 03 May 2012 01:10 AM PDT

As you may already know, this week the BlackBerry World event is taking place in the US and thanks to it we’ll get to see the BlackBerry 10 OS in action. We also have a clip of the new OS running in the video below, but these are mere seconds of presentation. So, does BB 10 have what it takes to defeat Android or Windows Phone?

I’d be tempted to say “no”, but let’s wait and see how this OS unfolds. It’s actually RIM’s last hope to compete on a market where even Bada OS is doing better than their products. The predictive keyboard in the video seems to be top notch and although the software may seem promising at first, what about the hardware? In the image above you can see a BB 10 OS prototype, that looks strangely like the iPhone. Hopefully this will remain a prototype, else I can already smell a lawsuit coming from Apple…

Competing with Android will be very hard and people are still waiting for a kickass BlackBerry with a dual core or quad core CPU, maybe with a full touch experience. Several models and prototype have leaked over the past months and some of them even look decent, like the BlackBerry London model. However, with the recent turnmoil at RIM, it’s only this fall that we’ll see new models launched…
