Vanjoki: Nokia N9 and open source the best

Posted: 05 May 2012 04:44 PM PDT

Hero to many Nokia fans, Anssi Vanjoki who left Nokia after not being given the job as CEO was interviewed posted at tietoviikko.fi. The translator as usual mangled the Finnish translation (well any translation to English really) but the gist I got was that he’s still extremely happy with the N9, calling it the best he’s used. He also talks about open source and believes this is the best way forward.

He says he has no doubts Microsoft will get something done because they have deep pockets. I’m paraphrasing as the translation didn’t make that much sense.

Random Photo: N9 Jigsaw Puzzle

Posted: 05 May 2012 10:08 AM PDT

This post should be filed under the “Informal” part of this blog; as there’s absolutely no news involved here; just a really cool photo/ It’s simply just a Jigsaw puzzle showing off all 3 Homescreens of Meego, a pretty detailed jigsaw as it is (notice the time/status on each homescreen). Anyways just thought it was worth a share.

Thanks for the tip-off Edmund :D

Cheesy Video: Email and Networking on WP- Feat. Lumia 800

Posted: 05 May 2012 03:26 AM PDT

Ok, Honestly this video is PAINFUL to watch; the acting, the length, too much information….  But it does get the point across; since RIM launched BB10 last week I guess MSFT is pushing the enterprise/Company side of the phone showing how it’s better than BB (it is but there are better ways to prove it)- I guess it’s pretty cool that Nokia’s are the new face of WP though.

-For the record the younger guy in the video was running the smoked by WP at MWC- he’s a pretty cool guy; this video doesn’t do him justice.

(Also it would seem that Symbian is the only other OS with Lync- although I have no idea what it is), also if WP really wanted to put people first they wouldn’t make us sit through those 5 minutes. I think they were trying to do the whole MacVsPC but failed horribly at it, this is how it’s done: (I hate Mac, I’ve never gotten used to it’s OS or how to use it but credit given to good advertisement).

Juicy: Nokia 808 PureView Internal/Disassembly pictures and full 137page manual as it passes FCC

Posted: 05 May 2012 03:02 AM PDT

The Nokia 808 PureView has passed FCC which means internal/disassembly photos and a full manual! Enjoy :)

Here’s that 41MP Sensor all naked like.

We saw a manual the other day but we did not it wasn’t the full one. Here seems to be the complete 137 page manual. I’d love to read the whole thing right now but I have revision deadlines to meet.

Please feel free to comment if you find anything of interest. The manual may answer questions that current Nokia pages can’t answer at the moment

Video: Unboxing Lumia 900 Europe/ROW Edition

Posted: 05 May 2012 02:57 AM PDT

I get so excited every-time I see one of these unboxing videos; especially since this is the Europe/ROS (Rest Of World) version; which means it’s coming soon!!!!! Sadly it’s not a white one but we’ll take what we can get.

It’s nice to see that they’ve included the headphones in this version, meaning as we first speculated the lack of headphones in the US version is part of At&ts subsidization/marketing. Also I’m completely in love with the white USB cable (currently using my Kindle’s white cable to charge my 800)- I can’t help but think how awesome that’s going to look with a Stormtrooper Lumia. SOON.

Lumia 900 Ads take over NewYork.

Posted: 05 May 2012 02:51 AM PDT

It doesn’t seem as if the ad time the L900 has been getting is going to end any time soon; the latest slew of advertisements took over a NewYork’s Grand Central 42nd st. train station plastering up “The Beta Test is Over” everywhere imaginable from stairs to columns to floors- I actually laughed at a couple of these (like the one above)-

Thank god this thing doesn't have a pentile- I think sammsung shot themselves in the foot with that.

All in all it’s nice to see that the’yre not slacking off on pushing the 900 especially since the S3 and the One X are about to launch.

New Microsoft Store in Boston, big banner for Nokia Lumia 900 + Lumia 900 ads at NYC Subway

Posted: 05 May 2012 02:42 AM PDT

A couple of quick Lumia related stories:

1) There’s a big banner for the Nokia Lumia 900 on the walls hiding the new Microsoft Store, Prudential Center, Boston.

Cheers Erzhik  for the tip!

2) From Boston now to NYC, some more Nokia Lumia 900 advertising at NYC subways. I wish it wasn’t the beta test campaign.

Nokia Drive (3.0) & Nokia Transport (2.0) Upcoming Features:

Posted: 05 May 2012 02:41 AM PDT

Image

Nokia Drives last update brought offline navigation to all; which is great- so what’s to come in 3.0?

  • the application “learns” based on the style of driving
  • Time travel and the density of traffic movements are tracked in real time, displaying information on the “live tile"
  • Automatic determination of time of day, with the change of colour scheme cards
  • Manual adjustment of routes
  • Off-line favourite lists with the possibility of fixing tiles on the desktop.

And for the newly released Nokia Transport:

  • Search for public transport using the user's location.
  • Displaying nearby transportation: buses, trains, trams, subways, taxis, marked stops
  • Show the route with transfers
  • Support Schedule in 87 countries around the world
  • Support for fast access to Favorites
  • Advanced Search
  • Saving query history
  • Change the query without a new route
  • Faster search and installation of the route
  • Optimized application performance

It seems like a pretty nice changelog to come (soon hopefully) but one feature I’d love to see (and is frankly pretty important) is the ability to navigate to a Favorite through Nokia drive (as of now favorites don’t sync between drive & maps)- up till now the best Favorites/search integration I could find is still on Symbian, (at least the N9 can sync with the Symbian favorites- WP doesn’t recognize any of your favorites or routes stored online).

MNB RG: New features and phones from Nokia AGM

Posted: 05 May 2012 12:28 AM PDT

Nokia AGM location, Helsinki Fair Centre

This is a follow up of Janne’s Nokia AGM post.

http://mynokiablog.com/2012/05/04/mnb-reader-generated-fact-checking-what-was-said-at-nokia-agm/

Now over to Janne:

Just a couple of notes from Thursday’s Nokia AGM that got lost in all the hooplah about he said, she said. These are obviously not really news to anyone following Nokia closely, but still further confirmation of what is in the pipeline in the near future:

Lumia
For Lumia Stephen Elop listed several new features that are coming to address customer feedback. He made a point out of this, clearly in certain markets (I think India) Lumia’s missing features are hurting it. The ones he mentioned were Wi-Fi tethering, vCard support (which he mentioned was a very much used/requested feature), DLNA for connectivity to e.g. smart televisions (Elop was asked about Smart TV connectivity support and he mentioned DLNA as an answer), panoramic photography (I think this is already out in the Nokia Creative Studio) and finally data and call counters that are missing from Windows Phone. I don’t think this was an exhaustive list, just examples of what is coming soon.

Mobile phones

On mobile phones he confirmed that Nokia is announcing new products during the current quarter – and from the wording (he discussed countering the Chinese cheap-Android competition) I took this to mean the new swipey, full-touch experience based on Series 40 aka codename “Sonic”, for which a manual leaked recently. Meltemi was not discussed or mentioned during the AGM, if I recall, suggesting that it is not coming until much later.

Tablets

I spoke of this a bit in my previous post, and clearly not much was said on tablets, but Stephen Elop was asked about (now ex-) chairman Jorma Ollila’s comments that Nokia’s tablet strategy was “on schedule” to Financial Times. He said they don’t comment on future products, but immediately went on to discuss Windows 8 tablets. So, in my opinion, take that as confirmation Nokia will come out with Windows 8 tablets “on schedule” (read: fall). Later it was asked if Nokia will tune the look and feel of Windows Phone and he said they want to receive the full benefits of the Windows 8 halo effect on Metro. So expect Nokia’s Metro devices to retain Live Tiles instead of Live Squircles – Elop actually gave the example of turning tiles to round balls, but dismissed it as detrimental for them considering the Windows 8 Metro halo effect. They want to be associated with that blizzard. He did say they will tune and complete the experience in other ways, but expect the basic look-and-feel of Metro remain.
